After kicking off the early 2021 season in NASCAR, Santino Ferrucci of Woodbury, CT made what was meant to be a brief return to the NTT IndyCar Series for the Month of May at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. But Ferrucci is going to stick around just a bit longer.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing announced Monday that the Connecticut native will pilot the team’s No. 45 Honda again this weekend, pairing with full-time competitors Graham Rahal and Takuma Sato to compete in the doubleheader in Detroit’s Belle Isle Park.
“I’m excited to compete in the two races in Detroit after a fantastic run at the Indy 500,” Ferrucci said. “To carry the momentum into Detroit is massive for the team. Hy-Vee is partnering with Frito-Lay so we will have Chester Cheetah and the Cheetos brand on the car, which I think is pretty awesome. It’s a fantastic track, and I’m excited to be returning to Detroit since we didn’t get a chance to race there in 2020.”
Ferrucci made his IndyCar debut at Detroit in 2018 after an exit from Formula 2 before running full-time in the series for Dale Coyne Racing from 2019 through 2020. He started 2021 with a partial Xfinity slate for Sam Hunt Racing before scoring the Indy opportunity with RLLR, where he finished a team-best sixth.
His main sponsor for the weekend, Hy-Vee Inc., will also support Rahal’s No. 15 car in upcoming races at Road America and World Wide Technology Raceway.
“The excitement and energy that the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team brings forth to our partnership is like none other,” Randy Edeker, chairman, CEO and president of Hy-Vee, said. “The team truly cares about its fans just like we care about our customers at Hy-Vee.
“Since signing on as a sponsor last year, we’ve heard from people all over the country about our involvement in racing and look forward to what the rest of the season has to offer.”
