Alex Bowman grabbed victory from Kyle Larson with the fastest pit stop on the final yellow flag pit stop. Larson led a race high 263 laps and won both Stage 1 and 2 but gave up his dominating race to Bowman on the last stop.
In addition to that, Hendrick paced the field with the first four finishing positions, Bowman P1, Larson P2, Chase Elliott P3 and William Byron P4. Only Elliott failed to lead any laps. All in all, Chevrolet grabbed 6 of the Top 10 finishing positions.
Now the teams head to Circuit of the Americas in Austin, TX. This will be one of the few tracks where the drivers will actually have practice. This should prove to be an exciting race where none of the drivers have ever run the nearly 3.5 mile circuit.
Kyle Busch Watch
This was not a kid day to Kyle as he had mechanical issues stemming from a loose plug wire. He finished the race in P27 vs retiring early. Maybe those saved points will matter at some point in the season but with his recent win, he is safely in the playoff picture.
Good on ya mate
Tyler Reddick (P8) and Daniel Suarez (P9) helped Chevy round out the Top 10. Suarez new he had a struggling car but stayed after it and nabbed another Top 10. I am looking for good things at COTA for him.
Bubba Wallace (P11) just missed a Top 10.
Another Top 15 run for both Austin Dillon (P14) and Ross Chastain (P15). We’ll see how they do at COTA.
So ya had a bad day
Aric Almirola can’t buy any good luck. He was out at lap 300 and finished dead last (P37). This guy has had such horrible luck this season, you wonder if they will ever turn things around.
Keselowski out at Penske?
Numerous stories have come out about Brad Keselowski leaving Penske at the end of the year and moving into an owner/driver position at Roush Fenway Racing. On the surface, one would have to ask why would he leave a winning team? He will be a free agent in 2022 and has made it very clear he wants to become a Cup owner when he is done driving. I don’t see The Captain handing that over to Kes but Jack Roush is looking to restore the team he built to glory. This just might be the driver he needs to do that. What happens to Ryan Newman and Chris Buescher remains to be seen. Buescher is under contract but Newman could be moved to a new third Roush team. – or retire. Or he could decide to take his veteran presence on the road for hire one more time.
At Penske, would Matt DiBenedetto move to a Penske car while Ryan Blaney or Joey Logano take over the iconic 2 car? Or is Penske looking to incoming 2022 rookie Austin Cindric?
Lots to unpack here and while Roush and Kes both issue “no comment” statements, where there is smoke there is usually fire. If this was all hogwash, you would think that one of them would say so.
Stay tuned as Silly Season has started early and will only heat up from here.
