WATKINS GLEN - Statistically Speaking

When the rain cleared, there was Smoke! Tony Stewart would win, in a final 25 lap battle with Marcos Ambrose.

Ambrose was second, a career best, and Carl Edwards third. Kyle Busch, Greg Biffle, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kurt Busch, Max Papis, Clint Bowyer and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top 10. Polesitter Jimmie Johnson, seeking his first career road win, finished 12th.

On lap 67, Kyle Busch chose the outside as Stewart took the inside on the restart. This would prove to be fatal for Kyle, as Stewart took control.

A fifth caution, would set up a double-file restart with Stewart and Ambrose. Ambrose dived low but was blocked by Stewart. Ambrose was running on older tires and never gave Stewart a challenge over the final 10 laps.

Will we see these two battle it out again? Let’s compare the numbers and see who’s hot and who’s not at Watkins Glen.

Pocono - Statistically Speaking

Denny Hamlin, who won the race, was 6th or better in 7 of 9 starts and led 5 times for 88 laps was not the center of attention for this race. The main focus was on what some drivers called the worst driving they had ever seen.

“The key for us winning that race was two restarts that Denny made when we gave up track position,” crew chief Mike Ford said. “You didn’t want to give up track position, but you needed fuel at some point.”

Joey Logano was in route to a possible top 5 finish before he and Kevin Harvick tangled up in turns 2 and 3. Logano spun around and nearly saved it, but finally spun on around bringing out the caution. His frustration would later spill over into his postrace comments about Harvick. “It’s probably not his fault, you know?” he said. “His wife wears the fire suit in the family, tells him what to do.”

Let’s crunch the numbers and see who’s hot at Pocono and similar tracks.

Chicagoland Statistically Speaking

Mark Martin would grab his 39th victory of 741 races in last year’s LifeLock 400 from Chicagoland. Jeff Gordon would snatch 2nd and Kasey Kahne would finish in 3rd.

Tony Stewart, the points leader at the time, would finish 4th and move to 175 points over Jeff Gordon in the standings. Denny Hamlin rounded out the top 5.

It was not the best day to drive a Ford, but Carl Edwards would finish the best in 14th.

Let’s crunch the numbers and see who’s hot and who to avoid at Chicago.

Notable Quotables - Denny Hamlin

“No, I didn’t see any debris, if that’s what you’re asking.   I mean, we typically get them every single week. I’m not going to say it’s accepted, but what can you do?“

“You know, I understand this is show business.“

Pocono - Statistically Speaking

Tony Stewart won The Pocono 500 last June, but it wasn’t easy. First he had the Pole Position due to “Mother Nature” and points. Then, an unfortunate wreck in practice, would send him to the rear of the field to start the race. He then would fight his was to the front of the field. He finally, gambled on fuel to stay out and finish ahead of Carl Edwards to win the race.

The win would also mark Stewart’s 34th career win in the Cup series. He ended up beating Carl Edwards by 2.004 seconds. Following them through the checkered was David Reutimann, Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman, Marcos Ambrose, Jimmie Johnson, Juan Montoya, Jeff Burton and Sam Hornish Jr., to round out the top 10 finishers.

Now let’s break down the numbers and see who you should watch, statistically speaking for Pocono.
