I heard some interesting buzz while at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway over the weekend.
Some things we can talk about, some we can’t.
And we have to be vague on who revealed them.

If you think it’s good news that Hendrick Racing’s Jimmie Johnson came out of his “winning slump” and got back into contention just in the nick of time for the Chase To The Sprint Cup, you’re right.
But as far as NASCAR is concerned, it’s bad news.
Should Johnson win the championship again, the suspense of competition between drivers would be lost, and so would the interest among race fans.

Speculation on whether the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon will be changed continues to surface in the absence of an official notice. Yet the Boston Globe, in a lead story on Page One of the sports section dated Thursday, July 27, claims that NHMS will not lose a Sprint Cup race next year. The author, Mike Vega, cited information to this effect as obtained from an unidentified source inside Speedway Motorsports Inc. Still a number of persistent reports in early July had the June Cup race moving to Kentucky Speedway. Kyle Busch finally broke his lengthy 21-race drought when he returned to Victory Lane at Richmond last Saturday.
While in the same race, a strong finish by Kevin Harvick put him back on top in the Cup point tally with a ten point advantage over Jimmie Johnson, who had a lousy night at RIR. As a result, things are now getting really hot within the NASCAR Cup Series, and that’s what’s going to sell tickets and peak interest with TV ratings.
Meanwhile, Brad Keselowski’s “take no prisoners” approach won him the Nationwide race, livening things up in that series, pushing him ahead of Harvick in that particular division.

NASCAR’s three week probation of Carl Edwards seems to be fair for coming up on Brad Keselowski at Atlanta. Brad, while clean in this episode, has been aggressive in other Cup races. One wag, who watches a lot of Cup racing, told us that Brad doesn’t have any friends out there on the track. We’ll reserve our opinion until we see what happens at restrictor plate track where you need friends to hook-up with. Both Edwards and Keselowski are going to be watched closely by the sanction over the next month or so. This also fulfills NASCAR’s promise of letting the drivers be themselves. Which in turn will make the Cup races more interesting. The result of which will help to sell tickets and kick up the TV ratings. Say what you want on this one. Bottom line is that NASCAR made a business decision.
