In spite of being in the hunt for most of the Cup race at Phoenix, Jimmie Johnson’s luck finally ran out. It was Ryan Newman who made it into Victory Lane, and it was a happy ending for the “Anybody But Jimmie Johnson” crowd. But NASCAR still has problems selling tickets to its Cup races and getting fans to watch on TV.

At Bristol, Jimmie Johnson won his third out of five 2010 Cup races, for a total of 50 career wins.
That’s very good for him but very bad for NASCAR. We predict that if it appears that JJ is on his way to another NASCAR Cup Championship, ticket sales and TV ratings could go lower than they are now. Fans are looking for surprises, not the same-old, same-old.

NASCAR’s three week probation of Carl Edwards seems to be fair for coming up on Brad Keselowski at Atlanta. Brad, while clean in this episode, has been aggressive in other Cup races. One wag, who watches a lot of Cup racing, told us that Brad doesn’t have any friends out there on the track. We’ll reserve our opinion until we see what happens at restrictor plate track where you need friends to hook-up with. Both Edwards and Keselowski are going to be watched closely by the sanction over the next month or so. This also fulfills NASCAR’s promise of letting the drivers be themselves. Which in turn will make the Cup races more interesting. The result of which will help to sell tickets and kick up the TV ratings. Say what you want on this one. Bottom line is that NASCAR made a business decision.

Last Sunday saw Jimmie Johnson take his fifth win at Fontana, which is the good news.
The bad news is who will keep Jimmie from taking another championship and prevent him from making 2010 as another boring year for the NASCAR Cup Series?
Maybe Kevin Harvick can do it, if he and his team can just eek out a little more power and stay on track.

Ever wonder how much petrol is used to stage a race in California?
The haulers, the air travel, the souvenir trucks, the fans………
Sorta staggers the mind when you think about it.
In the future, one might envision electric vehicles, but it can’t quite stretch to electric airplanes.
Beam me up, Scottie.
