Post-season layoffs not as massive as speculated…yet

In the weeks prior to NASCAR’s season-ending event at Homestead-Miami Speedway, some inside the sport speculated that 750-1,000 jobs in the sport would be lost. Some even began labeling the Monday following the season as “Black Monday”. For some people and teams, this week has been just that.

The first post-season layoff totals are not as high as originally speculated, but nonetheless, dozens in the sport are now looking for work. Petty Enterprises, experiencing trouble due to a lack of sponsorship for 2009, reportedly laid off 23 people this week. The Wood Brothers, an equally legendary team with similar trouble and an unsure future laid off 22 employees. Depending on sponsorship, the No. 21 Ford may even run a limited Sprint Cup schedule next season.
