Packed stands, irate fans (regarding the traffic problem), and a good (not great) inaugural Cup race.
But if you’re a student of Bruton Smith, you know he’s gonna make this into a great track.
Then he’ll expand the stands. But this small berg of Sparta is much like Bristol….few (if any) motels in the nearby area, so it’s either Cincy, Louisville, or Lexington…..or camping out.

Todd Bodine and Kyle Busch went at it in the NASCAR Truck race at Kentucky with Bodine coming out on top with the win. Bodine’s comments while in Victory Lane about Busch’s “dirty driving” resulted in the latter’s rushing over into Todd’s face, going toe-to-toe with him – no doubt generating some much-needed publicity for NASCAR’s third-tier division!

NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES TO VISIT KENTUCKY SPEEDWAY IN 2011
Inaugural 400-mile event scheduled for July 9
SPARTA, Ky. -Speedway Motorsports, Inc. (SMI) Chairman and CEO Bruton Smith announced today that Kentucky Speedway will play host to its inaugural 400-mile NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Saturday, July 9, 2011.
“The passionate NASCAR fans throughout Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati have deserved a Sprint Cup Race for a long time. Before this, racing in Kentucky was about horses, but now it’s all about more horsepower. We’re going to create the grandest sports event in the history of the state in 2011, and any fan that comes here will know what it means to be ‘Lucky in Kentucky,’” Smith said.

Bruton Smith sure knows to grab the attention of the media. It’s been announced that he will award an unbelievable $20 million to the winner of both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca Cola 600, held on the same day in 2011! But in order for drivers to be entered in both races, it appears that some adjustments will have to be made. Both events will be held on Sunday of the Memorial Day weekend with the Indy 500 going at 11 a.m. and the Coca Cola 600 starting that same late afternoon. But don’t think foxy Smith doesn’t know exactly what he’s doing. He knows that plugging 500 miles at Indy and then 600 laps at Charlotte in a single day is really too much for even the best of drivers, but oh, the publicity!

Ever wonder how much petrol is used to stage a race in California?
The haulers, the air travel, the souvenir trucks, the fans………
Sorta staggers the mind when you think about it.
In the future, one might envision electric vehicles, but it can’t quite stretch to electric airplanes.
Beam me up, Scottie.
