WATKINS GLEN - Statistically Speaking

When the rain cleared, there was Smoke! Tony Stewart would win, in a final 25 lap battle with Marcos Ambrose.

Ambrose was second, a career best, and Carl Edwards third. Kyle Busch, Greg Biffle, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kurt Busch, Max Papis, Clint Bowyer and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top 10. Polesitter Jimmie Johnson, seeking his first career road win, finished 12th.

On lap 67, Kyle Busch chose the outside as Stewart took the inside on the restart. This would prove to be fatal for Kyle, as Stewart took control.

A fifth caution, would set up a double-file restart with Stewart and Ambrose. Ambrose dived low but was blocked by Stewart. Ambrose was running on older tires and never gave Stewart a challenge over the final 10 laps.

Will we see these two battle it out again? Let’s compare the numbers and see who’s hot and who’s not at Watkins Glen.

Dover - Statistically Speaking

Back in June of 2009, Jimmie Johnson dominated the race. He was leading when a late caution came out with just 38 laps to go. A slow pit stop, sent him to ninth position for the restart. doverarticle

Greg Biffle would be the new leader until eight laps to go, when Tony Stewart would take it away with Johnson right on his tail. Stewart and Johnson would battle nose to tail for six more laps. Johnson would then close Stewart off on the high side to make the pass.

Chad Knas said “The pit snafu was unfortunate but, luckily, not costly”.

Again in September of 2009, Johnson would dominate the field. He led 298 laps in May at Dover and would lead 271 at this race again bringing home the win and the Dover sweep for 2009.

Horseshoe or Hogwash? Let’s run the numbers and see who’s hot at Dover, same track types and current hot streak!

Richmond - Statistically Speaking

richmondstatspeakingKyle Busch became the second driver to ever win on his birthday, after winning at Richmond back in March of 2009. Cale Yarborough is the only other driver to accomplish this and did it twice. The first was at Wilkesboro in 1977 and the second was at Atlanta in 1983.

For the win, Busch would get a quick start on a late restart to pass Edwards again. He then had his sites set on the leader Jeff Gordon. He would finally race past Gordon for the Richmond sweep.

Let’s tally up the numbers and see who’s hot at Richmond, same track types and current momentum coming into this weekend’s event.

Texas - Statistically Speaking

texaswhoshotIt was this time last year at Texas where a loose handing race car, and a hard to beat teammate was not enough to keep Jeff Gordon from victory lane.

Gordon held the lead until he was blocked by Joey Logano’s lapped car with 39 laps to go. That allowed Carl Edwards to move into the lead, having run Gordon down since the restart. Three laps later, Stewart took 2nd from Gordon. David Stremme’s spin with 30 laps to go brought the caution out and the leaders came to pit road. Gordon won the race off of pit road and capitalized on Edwards’ pit road problems. On the restart with 25 laps to go, Gordon pulled away as his teammate Jimmie Johnson moved past Stewart into 2nd place. Johnson closed in on Gordon and narrowed his lead down to a half-second in the closing stages, but was unable to catch his teammate. The drought was over!

Let’s see who’s hot at Texas by the numbers and who is hot in the past few races of the current season.

Phoenix – Statistically Speaking

martinwinsarticleIn the April race of 2009, Mark Martin (50), became the oldest winner in the series since Morgan Shepherd won at age 51 in 1993 at Atlanta. The victory would come after a long dry spell, (97 races) since his last win was in 2005 at Kansas.

Stewart ran second, followed by Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, and Greg Biffle. Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., David Reutimann, Sam Hornish Jr., and Carl Edwards completed the top 10, as a late caution for an accident involving Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Casey Mears scrambled the finishing order.

Let’s check the stats and see who’s hot at Phoenix and who is on a hot streak this season.

To Suspend Edwards Or Not, That Is The Question

md_4881003050194_kobalt_tools_500I am sure there will be news either later on today or by tomorrow as to what if anything will be done to Carl Edwards by NASCAR over what happened yesterday in Atlanta. He admitted in a post wreck interview that he intentionally hit Keselowski but did not think his car would go airborne. I guess we will know once an official statement is released by NASCAR as to what their decision will be after Edwards was taken to the NASCAR woodshed yesterday.
