According to a story on the Blog of Tomorrow posted on Wednesday, California track officials were pleased at having only one-third of the track empty for last Sunday’s Sprint Cup race.
According to reports, Gillian Zucker, speedway president, said “It’s an awesome crowd” with only about 60,000 of the 92,000 seats in the grandstand filled.
Now, in today’s economy I could see where this might get scored as a big win at any race venue. But this is par for the course at the Fontana track, which has had 11 non-sellout dates.

My column, “Dear Brian…” got almost 1,000 hits during its first week. When Pipe Smoke came on the scene as an independent site, the first 1,000 hits took over a year.
Honk if you remember seeing Tim Richmond drive in a demo derby.

Right now NASCAR could use some good news. It would be timely for NASCAR and Junior if they could catch a break and Junior pulls off a win in this weekend’s Cup race at Vegas. The media and fans have been hammering him for his Daytona performance. We are not so sure that any of his fans have turned against him. Let’s face it every driver hits a slump and he’s in one now. Even his late father, Dale, Sr., had his troubles but he toughed it out. We think that Junior’s got the same intestinal fortitude as his dad. And he’s hungry for a win in the near term.

What in the world was NASCAR thinking when they scheduled this race? Do they not know how hard it is to watch a race that goes into the evening is when the Oscar’s are on? That is considered to be one of the “don’t touch” shows in many households around the country.
I mean, people have Oscar parties and no matter how bad the song and dance routines are or how narcissistic the whole sordid affair is, it is a highly watched event. And then when you throw in a sprinkle-filled parade like California well… the chance to watch an entire race is slim to none. I have more than one TV in the house but the pressure to “sit with me” is intense during the Oscar estrogen event.
