FastCar Newsdesk for week of 1/29/09
Though A.J. Allmendinger’s name has been thrown around as a Gillet Evernham Motorsports and Richard Petty Motorsports driver for months, he officially had not been signed by the team, until Wednesday. RPM has signed Allmendinger to run at least 10 races in the No. 44 Dodge this season and may run more, pending sponsorship. The team has an option to keep the third year Cup driver with the team in 2010 as well. If RPM obtains sponsorship for the team, it will field Allmendinger and the No. 44 in more races this year and, again pending sponsorship, would like the field the No. 44 in every race next season.

We took a little break yesterday from our M/W/F schedule, due to all the nasty weather we had here in Kentucky.
But we’re here today, and probably tomorrow as well, unless nothing happens in the world of stock car racing…. naaw, that isn’t possible. SOMETHING will happen between now and then.
Check this edition of the Stock Car Gazette out for all the latest happenings in NASCAR!

One way or another, this will be an interesting season, and perhaps a year like we haven’t seen before. Economics may paint an up and down season for NASCAR across the board. While the Cup series may take the least beating, the Camping World and Nationwide series are far from safe this year. Both will probably struggle to fill the track with full fields throughout the year and there is a better than outside shot that may even happen in the Cup series.
But no matter who shows up at the track, fans will be watching. More may be watching from home this year as the economy furloughs more and more of us, but real fans have followed the sport through thick and thin. We just are in another thin period right now.
Once the boys return to Daytona, speculation will ensue about who will make the Chase, who will win their first race and who might close up shop altogether.
Here is my take on some drivers to watch in 2009.

In an effort to increase ticket sales, Bruton Smith, Chairman of Speedway Motorsports, says NASCAR should black out the races in local markets to help tracks sell all their tickets. NFL games are not shown in a home market unless they are sold out about 72 hours before the game. Thus, if Smith had his way, if Lowe’s Motor Speedway couldn’t sell out for a Cup race, then Charlotte would not be shown the race on TV. Or if Richmond did not sell out, then that market would not get to see the race aired live. Smith says a blackout could help ensure more tickets being sold. Smith notes that TV does too good of a job broadcasting the races, so it’s easier for a fan to decide to stay home and watch it on TV instead of going to the event and paying for tickets, concessions and other items
