TV Times - Ratings Down For NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Championship Weekend

by Lou Modestino ~ November 23rd, 2008 @ 2:08 pm
The Homestead Overnight TV ratings were down: ABC’s broadcast of Sunday’s Ford 400 Sprint Cup season finale from Homestead-Miami Speedway earned an overnight Nielsen Media Research rating of 3.6, Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal reports. The figure is 5.3 percent less than the 3.8 ABC earned overnight for the 2007 race. This came from SceneDaily, Jayski.com and StockcarGazette.com. Lou Modestino's TV Times

The ratings for Homestead might have been better if a driver other than Jimmy Johnson had it all locked up. Also, if the Chase Championship had been between two or more drivers there would have been some suspense. In retrospect, NASCAR had a good solid ten-year run before they started taking hits on the Cup TV ratings and ticket sales. In market parlance, they were lucky to have growth that long considering that NASCAR had a mature product. The Chase to the Nextel Cup was expected to continue the product life but it didn’t work out that way. Some feel that NASCAR forgot their fan base and that contributed to the downturn. Now with the economic meltdown there’s really not too much that the Daytona based sanction can do expect to ride it out like every other entertainment entity.

Post-season layoffs not as massive as speculated…yet

by Doug Turnbull ~ November 21st, 2008 @ 12:38 pm

FastCar Newsdesk for week of 11/20/08

In the weeks prior to NASCAR’s season-ending event at Homestead-Miami Speedway, some inside the sport speculated that 750-1,000 jobs in the sport would be lost. Some even began labeling the Monday following the season as “Black Monday”. For some people and teams, this week has been just that.

The first post-season layoff totals are not as high as originally speculated, but nonetheless, dozens in the sport are now looking for work. Petty Enterprises, experiencing trouble due to a lack of sponsorship for 2009, reportedly laid off 23 people this week. The Wood Brothers, an equally legendary team with similar trouble and an unsure future laid off 22 employees. Depending on sponsorship, the No. 21 Ford may even run a limited Sprint Cup schedule next season.

by Mike Irwin ~ November 20th, 2008 @ 6:01 am

The news from NASCAR and other stock car racing organizations is slowing down as we work our way toward the weekend. Today’s edition looks to be about half the size of yesterday’s. But we’ll keep putting out the Stock Car Gazette as long as there’s enough stock car news to do so.
