Texas By The Numbers

by Mike Wells ~ October 31st, 2008 @ 5:33 am

Jimmie Johnson is taking the Chase by storm and Carl Edwards is chasing him.

We’re back at Texas, and Cousin Carl showed the world that he can contend at this track. Earlier this year in the Samsung 500, Edwards built a lead of more than seven seconds over second place Johnson. Two late cautions gave Johnson a fighting chance. One with 39 laps to go for debris, and the other with only 5 to go! Edwards would storm away after each restart. He was just too hot to handle. After the race; “I didn’t have anything at the end for Carl.” Johnson said.

Johnson must average a 9th place finish over the final three races to clinch a third consecutive series title.

Merger talks continue in NASCAR garage

by Doug Turnbull ~ October 30th, 2008 @ 2:30 pm

FastCar Newsdesk for Texas, Chase Race No. 8, week of 10/30/08

As news about the economy’s impact on American automakers gets worse, talks about a potential merger between GM and Chrysler continue to heat up. Ford’s crumbling finances also have sparked rumors that it my want to me part of some sort of merger with GM or Chrysler. If GM were to buy Chrysler, no specifics have been released on how that will affect Dodge’s brand presence in NASCAR. Sources close to the situation say that GM and Chrysler have been in talks. Ford, who along with Dodge has decided to retract its Truck Series monetary sponsorship, recently signed a multi-year deal with Roush Fenway Racing to continue sponsoring the team and offering it engineering support in the Nationwide and Cup Series.

So if GM and Chrysler do merge, can you imagine a Dodge El Chargerino (Charger/El Camino) or a Chevrolet Impalagnum SS-RT8 (Impala SS/Magnum SRT-8)???

Do you have some ideas for some odd models that could crop up out of a merger like this? Leave them as comments below.

Stock Car Gazette, Wednesday, October 29, 2008

Kyle Petty is talking about running the 2009 Rolex 24 (which he’s done before) and…. a full season Grand-Am ride. There’s lots more to this story than we are hearing, folks. But I doubt we’ll ever know the full deal going on behind the scenes at Petty Enterprises… or should I just call it “Boston Ventures Racing”. It’s sad enough that there will not be a Petty in a Petty Enterprises car, let alone that Kyle has to go to another series completely away from NASCAR stock car racing to get a ride.

Read al about this and all the other latest news from NASCAR right here in today’s Stock Car Gazette e-zine.

6,000 Camaros ordered so far, 84% with V8

by Mike Irwin ~ October 28th, 2008 @ 11:14 am

Autoblog is reporting that “Chevrolet has reportedly taken more than 6,000 orders for its new Camaro so far…” and that “84% of orders have been for V8-powered SS models so far, which may mean a longer wait for delivery since GM is likely building a very different ratio of V8 to V6 models.”

You’re asking why you would care, this being primarily a stock car racing site? Well, it’s mostly because this site’s owner used to have a 1972 Chevrolet Camaro, and thinks the 1969 Camaro Z-28 with the 302 c.i. small block and 4 speed is about the best looking muscle car ever made.

The new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is an updated rendering of what that ‘69 Camaro would look like had that design been carried forward until now.

So I like it, and I’m reporting about it.
