Joey Logano named to Gibbs Racing 20 Cup ride

by Mike Irwin ~ August 25th, 2008 @ 3:40 pm

Joe Gibbs Racing announced today that The Home Depot will continue its sponsorship of the Sprint Cup #20 Toyota team in 2009 and beyond, and that Joey Logano, one of the sport’s brightest emerging stars, will take over the duties behind the wheel of one of NASCAR’s most successful race teams.

Logano will make his NASCAR Spirit Cup series debut on Sept. 6 at Richmond International Raceway in a Home Depot sponsored car featuring a reverse color scheme and bearing the #02.

In addition, Joe Gibbs Racing announced that Greg Zipadelli, crew chief of the #20 Home Depot Toyota Sprint Cup Series for the past 10 years, will remain atop the pit box as Logano’s crew chief.

Radical new look in works for Cup testing in 2009

by Mike Irwin ~ August 25th, 2008 @ 2:54 pm

BRISTOL, Tenn. — If the planned changes to the Sprint Cup testing policy remain as proposed for 2009, teams and crew chiefs will have to deal with a vastly different set of variables from those currently in place.

The crux of NASCAR’s new policy is to allow teams to test independently at tracks that host Cup races, something they currently are allowed to do only at open tests conducted under NASCAR’s auspices.

Somebody Needs To Change Their Huggies!

by Robyn Snell ~ August 25th, 2008 @ 12:59 pm

Good ol’ Cousin Carl (aka teeth… horse… flip… whatever you want to call him) served up a spoon full of Kyle Busch’s own medicine and it ran right through him. Time to change Kyle’s “Huggie’s” diaper!

TV Times - Sprint Cup TV Ratings Still Up for ESPN’s Coverage

by Lou Modestino ~ August 25th, 2008 @ 8:50 am

ESPN’s coverage of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Michigan had a 3.9 household coverage rating, with 3,743,919 households (5.30 million viewers). Comparisons to the 2007 race are not direct as last year’s race aired on a Tuesday morning on ESPN2 after a two-day rain delay and earned a 1.7 rating. ESPN2’s coverage of the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Michigan was up from last year, earning a 1.3 household coverage rating in 1,269,087 households. The 2007 race earned a 1.2 rating. Ten of the past 11 telecasts on ESPN2 have shown increases as compared to the same race last year that also aired on ESPN2. This report came from ESPN Communications and the Jayski.com webpage.

Some folks have commented that they doubt those figures. But they come from neutral sources like the Nielsen Rating System. Add the fact that attendance is down due to the economy and many, of the absentees, are watching the races on the tube.
