Important note for ALL STOCK CAR GAZETTE SUBSCRIBERS

by Mike Irwin ~ August 19th, 2008 @ 10:12 pm

It’s been an interesting couple of weeks.

I was out of town last week with a family emergency. During this time, my web site host made the decision (with no input from anyone who was hosting with him that I know of) to move all of the websites on his main server (including MotorSportsNews.Net) to a bigger, faster, better server.

Frankly, it has been nothing but a nightmare from the very beginning, as you no doubt realized.

I lost count of how many “welcome” messages were sent out. This happened EACH time the technicians tried to copy the old server data to the new server.

Today (Tuesday), something happened when the data was copied that turned off a setting where ANYONE ON THE MAILING LIST can submit mail to everyone else on the mailing list. That was why you all got all that mail traffic when anyone would reply to the “welcome” message e-mail. Normally this is set up so that only myself and Heather can send out anything, and that we have to manually approve anything before it is sent out. This way we ensure that you don’t get any spam or malicious e-mails. No one’s e-mail address was compromised in any way.

It snowballed badly downhill from there. I could not log in to the new server to reset anything because the domain name server (DNS) still pointed to the OLD server for me, and not the new one.

That’s when I sent out the “DO NOT REPLY TO ANYTHING” message earlier today.

So here’s where we stand right now… the mailing list has been repaired so that only myself and Heather can send out mail again. Everything else “appears” to be back to normal.

I do want to offer my sincere apologies for all this mess, even though I really had nothing to do with causing it (this time). My site host is doing their best to give us faster service on our websites, and we (along with all his other customers) were just caught up in a bad situation because of this.

IF YOU SHOULD WANT TO UNSUBSCRIBE TO THE STOCK CAR GAZETTE, I do understand. Please just drop an e-mail to me (mike@motorsportsnews.net) with your e-mail address and I will remove you just as soon as I can.

I am exploring other options for e-mail delivery of the Stock Car Gazette, including Feedburner, Feedblaster, and others, so if anyone out there has any experience with those, please let me know. My idea is to take the e-zine off of the website, so that I have independent control over it if things like this would happen again.

BEFORE I DO ANYTHING ABOUT MOVING THE STOCK CAR GAZETTE, I WILL NOTIFY EACH OF YOU AS TO WHAT IS OR WILL BE HAPPENING.

Thanks for sticking with us… we appreciate you being a subscriber.

This note will also be sent out via e-mail to all Stock Car Gazette subscribers.
