Some long lasting sponsor-race team partnerships have yielded some of the most recognizable cars in NASCAR history; the #22 Caterpillar, Bill Davis Racing car is no exception. This partnership, however, will come to an end at the beginning of the 2009 season, as Richard Childress Racing officials announced Wednesday that Caterpillar is signing on with the #31 team and driver Jeff Burton. Caterpillar will replace AT&T, who has to stop sponsoring the car, because Sprint is the title sponsor of the Cup Series.
The departure of Caterpillar from Bill Davis Racing causes little surprise, because the team has struggled mightily the past few seasons, despite winning the Daytona 500 with driver Ward Burton in 2002. Current driver Dave Blaney has struggled to stay in the top 35 in points the past two seasons, causing the team to fail to qualify for races. BDR does plan to move on, though, not only announcing that they look forward toward the opportunity to find a new sponsor for the #22 in 2009, but also plan to field a 2nd team, the #23, full-time next season.
