Is Stewart Playing the Field or Is He Playing Gibbs?

Filed under: Chuck Checks In! — Chuck Abrams @ 12:20 PM Wednesday, April 30, 2008

If you listen to Tony Stewart, nothing is wrong with his contract at Joe Gibbs Racing.

But the cat is well out of the proverbial bag as he has also indicated that he is listening to offers from other teams.

And Joe Gibbs Racing has made it clear that Tony is under contract through the 2009 season and that they want him to stay with the organization.

I’ve Got An (Im)Pounding Headache…

Filed under: Articles by Heather — Heather Meyer @ 3:31 PM Tuesday, April 29, 2008

So pass the “rabbit relief” capsules…

Why is it, when there is an impound race, that the media jumps to the conclusion that the cars that have to make it in on time have a special qualifying set up?

Yes, these cars need to make the race in the first place, but don’t they need a decent finish too?

A Talladega “Short Track” Evening

Filed under: Misc. Columns — Doug Turnbull @ 1:13 PM

This is a tale of two stories in Talladega.

At Talladega Superspeedway, NASCAR’s top two series and the millions of dollars that surround them duke it out through the last weekend in April. In those series, especially in the Nationwide Series, there is a big disparity between the performance of the well-funded teams and the small, grass-roots teams that travel track to track through the season.

The story is very similar across the road at the Talladega Short Track.

Track Trash – Demolition ‘dega

Filed under: Track Trash — Boyd McPherson @ 5:49 AM

Track stats: Aaron’s 499 - 150,000 fans show at the famed, recently repaved, 2.66 mile tri-oval on a humid, cloudy day to anxiously await the inevitable “big one” as drivers go four wide at times jockeying for position. Those who caught Saturday’s race knew anything was possible Sunday after watching Kevin Lepage’s serious bonehead maneuver that resulted in a 15 car pile of twisted, fiery metal. When the Spring drivers were asked to describe the track in one word you heard: “Dangerous;” “Wild;” “Patience;” “Respect;” — then there was Gordo’s one word answer “Restrictor plate racing”. Hmmmm - one word?

Filed under: TV Times — Lou Modestino @ 7:15 PM Monday, April 28, 2008

TV Times, by Lou Modestino   In an era where television ratings and attendance at many sporting events are showing declines, the American Le Mans Series is moving the needle appreciably. Any way you cut it or count it, attendance and television viewing for the Series is up significantly. Attendance at American Le Mans Series first three rounds is averaging more than 106,000 per race while television viewers increased more than four and a half fold. The attendance mark is a 3.2 percent increase over the same period last year. Reported estimated attendances this season are Sebring 170,000; St. Petersburg 45,000; and Long Beach 105,000. Sunday attendances for the IRL races at St. Petersburg and Long Beach are not taken into account.

Lori Hamilton: Leading the Charge On and Off the Track

Filed under: Craftsman Truck Series, FastCar Newsdesk — Doug Turnbull @ 7:08 PM

The loss of a loved one can bring the best and the worst out of someone, especially when that loved is as much of a presence as Bobby Hamilton was. Hamilton was never what one would call a superstar, but he did finish his Sprint Cup career with four wins and one top-10 finish in the points. He was the first driver to win in the #43 STP car after Richard Petty retired and won a Craftsman Truck Series championship in 2004, driving for and owning his own multi-truck team.

Filed under: Nationwide Series — Mike Irwin @ 11:42 AM

I found some YouTube video of the big crash in Saturday’s Aaron’s 312 Nationwide Series race… I didn’t get to see it live myself so I thought others might like to see this, too …
