Tony Tough on ‘Terrible’ Tires

by Doug Turnbull ~ March 14th, 2008 @ 6:29 am

For what last Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500 lacked in race-time drama, the post-race press conference and comments made up for. Many drivers vocalized their opposition of Goodyear’s choice of tire compound, but none were as strong in their opinions as 2nd place-finisher Tony Stewart.

“That was the most pathetic racing tire that I’ve ever been on in my professional career,” said Stewart in the post-race conference. “… Goodyear can’t build a tire that is worth a crap. If I were Goodyear, I would be really embarrassed about this weekend and what they brought here.”

Stock Car Gazette for Friday, March 14, 2008

by Mike Irwin ~ March 14th, 2008 @ 6:26 am

This weekend marks the end of an era. Dale Jarrett will be driving in his last points race in Cup.

The reason I became a Dale Jarrett fan was because of his dad, Ned. I admired Ned’s “country gentleman” personality, and started watching for DJ on the track as a result. I remember his first Cup victory at Michigan. I remember his first Daytona 500 victory, with proud papa Ned coaching him from the booth, and Dale doing on the track just what papa was telling him from that booth. Poor Mama Jarrett was a nervous wreck, too. I remember his first Brickyard victory and his first (and only) Cup win at Bristol, the place where he is ending his long career. I remember his 1999 Winston Cup Championship.

But what I remember most is a wide smile and a genuine interest that we were enjoying ourselves at a car show, the only time I got to meet DJ in person. He was every bit as classy and nice as he appears to be on the television. I got to meet his son, Jason, a couple of times, and it was obvious that the apple didn’t fall too far from Dad’s (or Grandpa’s) tree.

Congratulations on a great career, Dale Jarrett. Enjoy your retirement from driving. You’ve earned it.

Here’s your Friday Stock Car Gazette, chock full of NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR Nationwide, and NASCAR Craftsman Truck news.
