Nationwide Teams Prepare to Test in Daytona, Silly Season Continues Before February Opener

  Teams of NASCAR Nationwide Series prepare to head south for the first official test of the 2008 season. Teams will arrive at Daytona for open testing January 18th through the 22nd. Teams who were in odd numbered positions in the owners point following last July’s race at Chicagoland Speedway will test January 18th through the 20th. Teams who were in even number positions will take to the track with odd number teams on the twentieth, and then continue to test with just there group through the twenty-second. During the five days of testing a season opening fan fest with take place that includes multiple driver appearances.

2006 Daytona 500 Champ Johnson Fastest During First Day Of Daytona 500 Testing (includes afternoon test speeds)

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 7, 2008) – Jimmie Johnson, the two-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion and the 2006 Daytona 500 winner, is beginning the 2008 season where he finished 2007 – on top.

Johnson, driving the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet, posted the fastest lap on the first day of NASCAR Preseason Thunder testing for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series with a lap of 184.782 mph in the morning session.

Rounding out the top three were Casey Mears at 184.475 mph and Kyle Busch in his new ride at Joe Gibbs Racing at 184.064.

Kentucky Speedway Statement Regarding Today’s ISC Antitrust Suit Decision

SPARTA,Ky. - In response to today’s decision in the antitrust suit brought by Kentucky Speedway against NASCAR and ISC, Stanley Chesley, attorney for Kentucky Speedway stated: “We are disappointed in the Court’s decision, both for ourselves, for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and for all those fans who have been hurt by what we believe are NASCAR’s and ISC’s anti-competitive actions toward Kentucky Speedway. Judge sides with NASCAR, ISC in Kentucky Speedway lawsuit

David Poole of The Charlotte Observer is reporting that a judge has ruled in favor of NASCAR and International Speedway Corp. in an anti-trust lawsuit filed by Kentucky Speedway’s owner.

U.S. District Court Judge William O. Bertlesman’s opinion was issued Monday morning. In it, he ruled that even by granting Kentucky Speedway the benefit of the doubt on all reasonable inferences, the track failed to make a case.

  … former Winston Cup driver and 2004 Craftsman Truck Series champion Bobby Hamilton (Sr.) lost his battle with throat cancer and passed away.

Hamilton, a former Fairgrounds [Nashville] Speedway champion, missed most of the 2006 season after being diagnosed with cancer.

We miss you, Bobby.
