NASCAR’s Tony Stewart Resets With Event In Fort Wayne

Forget the beach house in the Caymans. Tony Stewart’s vacation spot of choice is a bit less sedate.

It’s loud and it’s fast and it stinks of tire smoke and exhaust, and did we mention it’s loud?

“Open-wheel racing,” Stewart says in a recent release, “particularly midget car racing has always been a reset button for me.”

And so he will reset again in Fort Wayne, in the Memorial Coliseum Expo Center, on Dec. 28 and 29. The 10th annual Rumble In Fort Wayne indoor USAC midget extravaganza goes off on those two days, and once again Stewart, the two-time NASCAR Nextel Cup champion, will be the marquee name.

The First Car of Tomorrow

One of the most pervasive stories over the last couple years has been the change from the existing Nextel Cup car to the Car of Tomorrow. The changeover has been a significant undertaking for multi-car teams like Hendrick, Roush, and Gibbs. But it’s not the first. Before any of these teams fielded their first Winston Cup entry, there was another ‘Car of Tomorrow’ conversion. This was the car of 1981 – the new downsized 110” wheelbase Grand National Winston Cup stock car. The downsize was a move by NASCAR to mirror the factories’ migration to a smaller production car.
