Cup teams become used car salesmen… COT makes old fleets obsolete

NASCAR’s decision to use the Car of Tomorrow exclusively next season has rendered an entire fleet of expensive race cars obsolete. After this weekend’s Pep Boys Auto 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, the conventional Nextel Cup cars will be run only two more times, at Texas Motor Speedway and in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Industry leaders say that means that 400 top-of-the-line race cars, many of which have spent hours in wind tunnels to fine-tune the bodies, will be sold for a fraction of what they cost to build.

Ilmor Engineering Quietly Brings Open Wheel Technology to Stock Car Auto Racing via ARCA RE/MAX Series

TOLEDO OH (10-23-07)—Although names like Franchitti, Speed and Villenueve attracted most of the attention, a newcomer to ARCA with more open wheel wins than those drivers have combined has quietly made its way into the ARCA RE/MAX Series.

Ilmor Engineering, which has developed winning racing engines for the IndyCar Series and Formula One, made a successful return to stock car auto racing in 2007 using the ARCA RE/MAX Series as a platform.
