He led 225 laps. He spent 91.3% of his laps in the top 15. His average running position was 3rd. It was his race to win, when he applied a little too much pressure to the pedal as he seen Kyle Busch race out of his pit stall. One again, the black cloud loomed over the #48 team.

Kyle Busch would race the #18 M&M Toyota to victory lane for the 2010 Autism Speaks 400 at Dover International Speedway earlier this season.

After battling four-time NASCAR Champion Jimmie Johnson all day, a late pit-stop speeding penalty for Johnson left Busch’s win uncontested.

Johnson dominates the track in the past 2 years and 3 races. His average driver rating in the last 3 races here is 142.9! Will he be the driver to watch or will he shoot himself in the foot again? Let’s crunch the numbers and see who’s hot!

Post Race Comments

“We snookered him on that one,” Busch told his crew as he streaked past the finish line. “He saw us coming, and he sped.”

“Yeah, I guess I got busted in the segment just leaving, or after, our pit box, the very next one,” Johnson said. “So what I can take from this is that I got a much better launch out of my pit box than I did on other pit stops and then was speeding in that given area.

“At the end [of pit road], I wasn’t busted. I knew Kyle had me beat when I saw the jack drop for him and he was easing away from me. And I kind of gave up at that point on racing him off of pit road because I knew we needed to be single file on the apron.”

Drivers To Watch

Jimmie Johnson – Last 5 races here, he has a 6.0 average finish and would have been better had he not shot himself in the foot earlier this year. Those last five finishes were – 7th, 5th, 1st, 1st and 16th.

Carl Edwards – In his career here, he has never placed worse than 18th in 2004. Since late 2006, he has never placed worse than 11th. His last 8 races here – 2nd, 3rd, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 1th and 8th.

Greg Biffle – Since 2004, the worst he has placed has been 13th. His last 12 consecutive races here – 1th, 1st, 13th, 8th, 5th, 6th, 2nd, 3rd, 1st, 3rd, 13th and 6th.

Matt Kenseth - He is really heating up here lately. He has a 3.2 average finish in the last 5 races at Dover. Those finishes were – 4th, 2nd, 4th, 3rd and 3rd.

Jeff Gordon – He has a 26th place finish in 2009, but the 8 finishes in the last 9 were – 12th, 3rd, 9th, 11th, 5th, 7th, 6th and 11th.

“I thought, I don’t care if I win this race or not,” Johnson said. “I don’t care if I finish this d*** thing. I’m running into him and get by him one way or another.”

Johnson paid back Busch with a poke of his own in the final stretch to surge ahead with two laps left and win the Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday for his fifth victory of the season.

“For sure, that’s what the fans want to see,” Johnson said.

Can Johnson sweep? Will we see payback? You’ll have to watch and see. Let’s run the numbers and see who to keep an eye on at Loudon.

Quotes That Day -

“I’m not good at doing that stuff,” Johnson said. “Usually I crash myself in the process. So I tried it once and moved him. The second time I moved him out of the way and got by him.”

Busch said his intention was to pass Johnson cleanly until he realized he could just push him out of his path. Johnson said he’d be surprised if Busch tried to purposely wreck him.

“If that’s his intentions, that’d be the first time in nine years racing with him I’d experienced that,” Johnson said. “It definitely changes the way I race with him from that point on. I hate that he felt I wasn’t going to wreck him, because that was my goal, to wreck him.”

“Strike that from the comments, he didn’t really mean that,” Johnson crew chief Chad Knaus interjected.

“He didn’t wreck me, so at the end of the day I guess I didn’t owe him,” Johnson said.

Tony Stewart finished second and Busch was third. Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top five.

“When you struggle as bad as we have, it definitely wasn’t going to hurt to go do something like that,” Stewart said.

Top 5 Drivers To Watch

Jimmie Johnson – Hard to bet against this team once they are in the Chase. His track record speaks volumes. Those were – 15th, 9th, 1st, 1st, 11th, 11th,13th, 8th, 9th, 39th, 5th, 6th, 9th, 2nd, 9th, 4th and 1st.

Denny Hamlin – He has never placed lower than 15th, what else can ya say? He even leads over Johnson as far as Top Finishing Average with 8.2! His finishes were – 6th, 4th, 1st, 15th, 8th, 9th, 15th, 2nd and 14th.

Jeff Gordon – He claims the 3rd best average finish position and rightly so. His average finish since 2000, has been 11.3! His last 10 finishes were – 14th, 15th, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd, 11th, 14th, 2nd, 15th and 4th.

Tony Stewart – As shown above, Stewart leads most of the categories. He claims a 13.0 average finish in the last 10 races. His last 11 are very impressive besides one, placing 37th. The others were – 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 12th, 3rd, 13th, 8th, 5th, 14th and 2nd.

Kurt Busch – 13.7 average finish in the last 10 races, but he has a 3.8 average finish in the last 5 consecutive races. Those were – 1st, 6th, 3rd, 6th and 3rd.

Dark Horse Anyone?

David Reutimann – has stepped it up in his last 5 races here @ Loudon. He has an average finish of 13th! Those finishes were – 19th, 15th, 4th, 12th and 15th.

As always, I advise players to check out the practice speeds and quals. Don’t read too much into these stats, but knowledge is power. The more you know, the better decisions you should make.

It wasn’t easy, several restarts and a 15-minute rain delay would slow him down.

>>>Fast Forward – Jimmie Johnson, finally marked Bristol off of his to do list earlier this season with his first victory at the track. He clawed his way to the lead, from 6th place in just three laps. Lady luck? Horseshoe? Kurt Busch led 278 of the 500 laps and had a decent gap on Johnson when his easy drive to victory was clouded by a debris caution with 17 laps remaining. All the leaders headed to pit road, and Busch and Johnson both took four tires on the final stop.

Let’s crunch the numbers and see who’s hot and who’s not. The drivers popping up, just might surprise ya!

Drivers To Watch

Kyle Busch – He has a 10.1 average finish in his 11 races here. The first 2 time here were a little rocky, placing 28th and 33rd. But, from 2006 to the present( 9 races ) , his average finish is 5.56! During that span, he picked up 3 wins, two 2nd place finishes and 8 top 10′s. He leads driver ratings as far as similar tracks go, at 107.9. He leads in laps led at Bristol with 81. He also leads 401, fastest laps run here.

Dale Jr. – Although he’s not shown it this year, with the up’s and down’s, he has done fairly well at this track. He is next on the list, with a 10.1 average finish, since 2000. In 2001, he placed 31st, but since then he has 16 top 15′s in 18 race. His last 5 here were – 5th, 18th, 14th, 9th and 7th.

Greg Biffle - In his races here, since 2003, his average finish is 11.0. He had a 2009 finish of 39th, but the other 14 have been 22nd and better. Last 2 races here were 4th and 4th.

Jeff Gordon - Average finish of 11.9, along with 15 top 15′s in the last 20 races makes him a good choice. Being good here, second in points, all the “near miss” wins this season could put J-Go in a position to be a prime pick this weekend. This season, he has placed 4th- 3 times, 3rd – 4 times and 2nd – twice. It’s only a matter of time. That gives him a 9.34 average finish in the last 9 races.

Denny Hamlin – Earlier this year, he placed 19th at Bristol. The 4 races before it ended as – 6th, 3rd, 2nd and 5th.

Jimmie Johnson – Last 3 races here – 3rd, 8th and 1st.

Ryan Newman – Last 4 races here – 6th, 7th, 6th and 16th.

Track Trouble For Decent Drivers

Joey Logano – 33.0 average finish. His only 3 runs – 38th, 34th and 27th.

A.J. Allmendinger – 40th, 35th, 34th, 16th, 37th and 17th.

They could gamble on fuel and risk a top finishing position, or they could risk it all for a chance to win. They both rolled the dice and withjust 3 laps to go, Johnson ran dry, allowing Vickers to take the lead on the final 2 laps and take the checkered flag!

Quotables

“Certainly frustrated,” Johnson said. “We’ve won one race on fuel mileage ever. It’s just what we’re not good at. I think it’s a little too risky for us to even try it.”

If it comes down to fuel, who has the best chance of winning here? We’ll look at every prospect here and break down the numbers for the CARFAX 400.

Drivers To Watch @ Michigan

Carl Edwards – Since 2004, Carl has been a top contender at Michigan. His worst finish came in 2006, placing 22nd. That’s not too shabby for a worst finish. He also placed 12th once. The other 10 finishes were 10th or better. Those finishes were – 10th, 5th, 4th, 2nd, 1st, 7th, 7th, 1st, 4th and 4th.

Matt Kenseth – 9.9 average finish in the last 10 races. He has fallen to a 16.0 average finish in the last 3 races at Michigan. Over the past 10 races, he has put up some nice numbers. 18 Top 15′s of 20 races!!!!!! NOT BAD KID! 13 of 20 were finished in the top 10. 9 of those 20 were finished in the top 5 and 2 of them came as wins.

Denny Hamlin – He boasts a finishing average of 11.9 for his 9 attempts. He has one bad finish of 39th, the other 8 were all 14th and better. They were – 12th, 9th, 14th, 5th, 3rd, 10th and earlier this season’s 1st!

Tony Stewart – In his last 20 races here, he has placed 41st twice. Once in 2006 and back in 2000. Besides that, he has been very decent. In the last 20 races, 16 were top 20′s. 14 of 20 were top 15′s, 13 of 20 were top 10′s and 9 of 20 were top 5′s. His last 8 races were – 3rd, 3rd, 10th, 5th, 12th, 7th, 17th and 5th.

Greg Biffle – In 15 races, he has a 12.8 average finish, with 2 back to back wins in 2004 and 2005. In his last 12 races here, 8 have ended up as top 10′s.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. – I don’t normally put him on the list. As of late at Michigan, he’s been finding his way toward the finish. Consistency is key. In the last nine races, he has placed – 3rd, 6th, 5th, 12th, 1st, 23rd, 14th, 3rd and 7th. Do you gamble with Jr. this week? If you ever have a chance, this might be the track to do it.

Jeff Gordon – He has a 15.3 average finish in the last 20 races here. That is weighed down by a 36th, 30th, 38th, 32nd and 42nd. But, he has some great ones mixed in, like – 1st, 7th, 5th, 3rd, 7th, 8th, 2nd, 9th, 2nd, 2nd and 4th. Yes, in the last 3 races here, he has a 2.67 average finish.

Jimmie Johnson – He either dominates or runs in the 20′s. In 17 races, he has just 7 top 10′s. Why does he lead most of the stats above? On the races he does well, he does very well. He leads a lot of laps and stays in the top 15. So, he is a risk, but it’s still hard to bet against them.

Wish List – I wish I could have Brian Vickers this weekend, but I know the answer already. His last five races were – 8th, 4th, 7th, 9th and 1st. We miss ya Vickers!

Joey Logano – Maybe one to watch. Maybe? He placed 25th on his first try here, but in this race last year, he placed 7th and earlier this year he placed 10th. May be worth a try.

There are others that are strong here. Study the numbers, look at past results and pay attention to the practice speeds. Information is power, so get geared up to make a better decision.

Tony Stewart would win, in a final 25 lap battle with Marcos Ambrose.

Ambrose was second, a career best, and Carl Edwards third. Kyle Busch, Greg Biffle, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kurt Busch, Max Papis, Clint Bowyer and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top 10. Polesitter Jimmie Johnson, seeking his first career road win, finished 12th.

On lap 67, Kyle Busch chose the outside as Stewart took the inside on the restart. This would prove to be fatal for Kyle, as Stewart took control.

A fifth caution, would set up a double-file restart with Stewart and Ambrose. Ambrose dived low but was blocked by Stewart. Ambrose was running on older tires and never gave Stewart a challenge over the final 10 laps.

Will we see these two battle it out again? Let’s compare the numbers and see who’s hot and who’s not at Watkins Glen.

Quotable ;

“I threw everything I could at him,” said Ambrose, who won the Nationwide race here Saturday with a daring move on Kyle Busch. “We got stuck in the back of the pack and had to make a gamble. The extra laps we had on the tires hurt. I closed in on him, could see him make a few mistakes, but we couldn’t quite close the deal.”

10 – Carl Edwards

10 – Kyle Busch

Who To Watch For (My Top 5)

1 – Tony Stewart – This was “Child’s Play”. Ambrose may have the best average finish here (just 2 races) , but Stewart has longevity. Over the past 10 races, ONLY 1 was outside the top 11 @ 26th. The other finishes were 6th, 1st, 11th, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 2nd & 1st.

In the last 6 races, 1.34 is his average finish. In these last 6 races, it’s either been 1st or 2nd, nothing else. I’m letting my chips ride on Smoke this weekend to pull up my 8.58 average winning pick for the season up.

2 – Denny Hamlin – A top 10 pick, if that’s what you’re looking for. In four races he has not placed outside of the top 10. Those finishes were 10th, 2nd, 8th and 10th.

3 – Carl Edwards -His first time at bat, a base hit. But since, they have been doubles and triples. However, Cousin Carl has not found that homer yet! His five races here ended in – 19th, 5th, 8th, 9th and 3rd.

4 -Kyle Busch - Same as above, sluggish start, but once he got it going he can’t slow it down. After a disaster in 33rd, he has placed 9th, 7th, 1st and 4th.

5 – Marcos Ambrose – 2.5 average finish in the 2 races he started. Last year’s miscue on pit road put him deep in the field, on worn tires by the time he got to Stewart and ultimately cost him the win. We watched him shut off the engine this year and got sent backwards. He had the car to beat then too. If he can stop shooting himself in the foot, he could do well, heck , even win this thing!

High Hopes

Jeff Gordon – He is doing a lot better this year than last and has had some near misses this season. Not counting last year, when he was tagged and sent spinning like a top, he is a top 20 runner. There was a time when he was a ringer, but as of late, it’s the 20′s @ at 20.2 average finish in the last 10 races.

Jimmie Johnson -Last 5 races here – 5th, 17th, 3rd, 7th and 12th.

Juan Montoya – Last 2 here -4th & 6th.

Kurt Busch – Last 3 here -11th, 10th & 7th.

A.J. Allmendinger – Last 2 here -11th & 13th.

Hold the Phone – Hang Up!

Dale Jr -Last 3 here -42nd, 22nd & 39th @ 34.34 Avg Fin

So, my pick this week is Tony Stewart

The main focus was on what some drivers called the worst driving they had ever seen.

“The key for us winning that race was two restarts that Denny made when we gave up track position,” crew chief Mike Ford said. “You didn’t want to give up track position, but you needed fuel at some point.”

Joey Logano was in route to a possible top 5 finish before he and Kevin Harvick tangled up in turns 2 and 3. Logano spun around and nearly saved it, but finally spun on around bringing out the caution. His frustration would later spill over into his postrace comments about Harvick. “It’s probably not his fault, you know?” he said. “His wife wears the fire suit in the family, tells him what to do.”

Let’s crunch the numbers and see who’s hot at Pocono and similar tracks.

There were more sparks to fly as Hamlin roared to the finish, a massive nine car pile up was underway and Kasey Kahne was taking flight! Kahne would blame A.J. Allmendinger for the incident. “I don’t know what AJ was doing there,” said Kahne, who finished 27th. “I don’t ever really talk to him much, but you can bet I will be talking to him this week.”

Allmendinger took responsibility for the wreck, but also stated that he was simply defending his turf.

Stewart, while admitting he didn’t have enough car to chase down Hamlin, wasn’t pleased either. He called the racing off the restarts “idiotic”. “I’ve seen some of the worst driving I’ve ever seen in my life in a professional series right here today,” he said. “So for anybody that’s looking for drama for the next couple races, start looking because I can promise I’m going to start making the highlight reel the next couple weeks.”

Drivers To Watch

Denny Hamlin -He will be going for 3 wins in a row.. In ‘08 and ‘09 he placed 23rd and 38th. The other finishes have been strong being – 1st, 1st, 6th, 3rd, 3rd, 1st and 1st.

Jimmie Johnson – Out of 17 races, ONE , JUST ONE, he placed 42nd and outside the top 15! His last 6 races here were – 5th, 6th, 3rd, 7th, 13th and 5th.

Jeff Gordon – Out of 20 RACES, only 3 were outside the top 14! He will get a win, the question is when will he finally strike?

Tony Stewart -Last 4 races here -2nd, 1st, 10th and 3rd.

Carl Edwards – Last 5 here – 9th, 1st, 2nd, 18th and 12th.

Ryan Newman – Once considered a non contender has shown he can get a good finish here. Last 4 here – 14th, 5th, 14th and 14th. Maybe he’s not a winning pick, but he could be a top 15 contender.

Matt Kenseth – 9 consecutive races of 17th or better. That is an average finish of 11.56! Not too shabby.

Mark Martin -11.42 is his average finish in the last 12 races here. This year’s 29th place finish is weighing that number down.

Kevin Harvick – 10.64 is his average finish in the last 11 races here. I look for him to do well.

Clint Bowyer – He has a spotty past here with a 41st and a 39th finish. The other 7 average out to 9.86 and last 4 were – 6th, 12th, 3rd and 9th.

Wanna Ride A Dark Horse?

Sam Hornish Jr. – Last 3 races here – 10th, 4th and 11th.

Juan Montoya – Last 3 races here – 8th, 2nd and 8th.

If it were me, I would at least try and wait to see how each teams look in practice speeds. Then make a more solid educated decision.

My Pick To Win = Jimmie Johnson

Runner Up – Denny Hamlin
