ESPN on ABC’s live telecast of that Saturday’s Aaron’s 312 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Talladega ( Ala.) Superspeedway scored big increases in ratings and household impressions over last year’s race, continuing an upward trend to series TV numbers in 2008.
The race earned a 2.6 rating and 2,962,000 household impressions, increases of 28 and 29 percent, respectively, over the same categories for last year’s ABC telecast (2.1; 2,291,000). The event also earned the largest numbers for a NASCAR Nationwide Series race on the ESPN networks since live NASCAR racing returned to ESPN in 2007, eclipsing the previous high of 2.4/2, 699,000 for the March, 2007, event from Las Vegas that aired on ABC.

In an era where television ratings and attendance at many sporting events are showing declines, the American Le Mans Series is moving the needle appreciably. Any way you cut it or count it, attendance and television viewing for the Series is up significantly. Attendance at American Le Mans Series first three rounds is averaging more than 106,000 per race while television viewers increased more than four and a half fold. The attendance mark is a 3.2 percent increase over the same period last year. Reported estimated attendances this season are Sebring 170,000; St. Petersburg 45,000; and Long Beach 105,000. Sunday attendances for the IRL races at St. Petersburg and Long Beach are not taken into account.

Fox’s broadcast of that Saturday night’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 Sprint Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway earned a final Nielsen Media Research rating of 4.4 and an 8 market share, Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Daily reports. The rating matches the 4.4 Fox earned last year, but the market share dropped from a 9 in 2007 to an 8 in 2008.
On the TV ratings front, it’s a cinch that Danica Patrick’s win, via fuel conservation, in the IRL go at Twin Ring Motegi, Japan has got to be one of the major assets for the now unified Indy Car Series. Since the merger of the IRL and CCWS the shoes continue to drop in a positive direction for newly emerged Indy Car Czar Tony George. A title sponsor for the series fell into place not long after that. Patrick finally getting her long overdue win is the third major factor of the swell of good news.

It’s pretty obvious that Fox is trying to wheel the TV ratings for the NASCAR Sprint Cup races. We’ve noticed “puffs” on Fox Cable News and Fox Entertainment’s alphabet network, some of them even in prime time. But, still the Texas TV ratings were down. NASCAR on Fox earned a 5.4/12 (8.6 million viewers) that weekend for racing from Texas, down -4 percent from last year’s 5.6/12.

The Martinsville overnight TV Ratings for the Cup race were the same as last year. NASCAR on Fox tallied a 4.9/10 that Sunday for racing from Martinsville. The 4.9/10 is flat with last year’s Martinsville rating (4.9/11), but in this case that’s good news given the dramatically tougher competition faced by this year’s event.

The Bristol TV ratings are up and have been consistent since Daytona.
NASCAR on Fox posted a 5.0/11 for racing from Bristol Sunday, a +2 percent gain over the same race a year ago and the third straight week that NASCAR has posted a year-to-year increase in the metered markets. Season-to-date, NASCAR on Fox is now averaging a 6.5/13 in the metered markets, a +7 percent boost over last year’s 6.1/12. This report came from the Fox PR office and the Jayski.com web page.
The reason for this good news is no doubt due to the fact that folks can’t afford to go to many events and are now watching on TV. We’ve seen some empty seats at some of the events this year. But, NASCAR and the host tracks can take some consolation in the uptick in the TV ratings while ticket sales are obviously off.

The overnight ratings went up! Fox’s broadcast of that Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway earned a 5.6 overnight Nielsen Media Research rating and a 12 market share, Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Daily reports. The rating is 19.1 percent higher than the 4.7/10 the race earned overnight last year.
Remarkably, FOX’s 5.6/12 for the race nearly matched the combined ratings of head-to-head competition on ABC, CBS, and NBC (5.7/12), and when national ratings are released it’s likely that FOX will beat that three-network total.

Fox’s broadcast of that Sunday’s UAW-Dodge 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway earned an overnight Nielsen Media Research rating of 6.2 and a 12 market share, Street & Smith’s Sports Business Daily reports. The rating is 12.7 percent higher than the 5.5 Fox earned overnight for the Las Vegas race in 2007.

Bible Verse of the Day
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”
