Humpy picks Edwards to win the All-Star race; Edwards’ car bodies awry

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Earlier this week, Lowe’s Motor Speedway President Humpy Wheeler announced his annual pick to win the All-Star race. He did not step out on too much of a limb, picking Carl Edwards to win the million dollar race. Edwards has won at similar tracks to Lowe’s three times this season, at California, Las Vegas, and Texas. He likely would have won at Atlanta, but blew an engine there.

Edwards may be able to attribute some of his and his teammates’ success to a legal adjustment that his team is making on the cars.

According to many in the garage, Roush-Fenway Racing is installing the rear-end housing (the rear-axle and components) at a slanted angle, to give the cars more grip. Other teams are catching on, as evidenced by the number of slightly crooked cars testing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway last week. So far, despite complaints from drivers like Jeff Gordon, NASCAR has not decided to ban the practice.

Our recent switch to Toyota is a strong testament to our focus and commitment to become more competitive. Even though we were disappointed it became necessary to miss two races to complete the transition to Toyota. We were excited about the potential for the balance of the 2008 season.

That excitement was abruptly interrupted this past week by news that a primary sponsorship deal once planned for the majority of the 2008 season had been reduced to a fraction of a season and that fraction will likely be in the fall.

Penalties Announced for #12 Team

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

www.Jayski.com is reporting….

NASCAR has issued penalties and fines to the #12 team that competes in the Sprint Cup Series, as a result of rule infractions found last Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway. The #12 car driven by Ryan Newman was found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules); and 12.8.1C (right rear quarter panel height did not meet the required specification; too high in post race inspection) of the 2008 NASCAR rule book. As a result, Newman and car owner Roger Penske have been penalized 25 championship driver and 25 championship owner points, respectively. Crew chief Roy McCauley has been fined $25,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31.(NASCAR PR)
