On February 16, 1997, 25-year-old Jeff Gordon claims his first Daytona 500 victory, becoming the youngest winner in the history of the 200-lap, 500-mile National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) event, dubbed the “Super Bowl of stock car racing.” Driving his No. 24 Chevrolet Monte Carlo for the Hendrick Motorsports racing team, Gordon recorded an average speed of 148.295 mph and took home prize money of more than $377,000. According to NASCAR.com, Gordon was “a veritable babe in a field that included 27 drivers older than 35, 16 at least 40.” Gordon’s Hendrick teammates Terry Labonte and Ricky Craven finished the race second and third, respectively.
Just when you thought you’d seen every special-edition Chevrolet Camaro out there another model comes along. Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet of Newton, NC has pulled the sheets back on a new Intimidator Camaro. The model follows in the footsteps of the 2001 Intimidator Camaro SS, by throwing a heap of extra horsepower at the already formidable muscle car. Under the hood, a supercharged V8 churns out 704 horsepower and 695 pound-feet of torque, while the rest of the vehicle has received suitable upgrades to cope with the increased performance. The suspension now wears one-inch drop rate springs, adjustable sway bars and new subframe connectors, along with a set of cross-drilled rotors help bring the vehicle down from speed. Wonder if you can get this as a car rental? I would think it would be pretty awesome to drive anyway, let alone just rent.

A custom, single-piece aluminum shifter is part of the package indoors, as well as suede seat inserts, white-face gauges and an Intimidator logo embroidered into each headrest. Outside, the Intimidator Camaro can be distinguished from its non-NASCAR name-checking counterparts by its cowl hood, race-inspired spoilers and chrome wheels.

The Mr. Goodwrench brand — first launched in 1974 — is used by GM dealers to promote vehicle repair and maintenance services will instead be replaced by “Chevrolet Certified Service,” “Cadillac Certified Service,” “Buick Certified Service,” and “GMC Certified Service.”

The name, which GM changed from Mr. Goodwrench to Goodwrench Service Plus in the ’90s, also was a major sponsor of NASCAR racing — including Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s car — for several years until it dropped its involvement in 2007. The brand’s advertising even included Stephen Colbert on an elusive search for “the real Mr. Goodwrench.”

General Motors marketing chief Joel Ewanick wants the vehicle brands, not corporate, to be the stars of GM, and that includes service and repairs, said one source familiar with the new campaign to Automotive News.

“This is another part of the effort to clear out brand clutter,” the source said.

Ford has released the fifth video in its 43 Fiestas series, and this time Ken Block and AJ Allmendinger have gone head-to-head to see who can do the best burnout. As always, Richard Petty himself is on hand to oversee the festivities. While you’d think Allmendinger’s ridiculous V8-powered, rear-wheel drive NASCAR beast would be the de facto champion of lighting ‘em up, Block’s wee rally-sped Fiesta held its own this time *ahem* around. The Gymkhana champ fell back on his signature pirouette-around-a-fixed-object move to win an approving nod from the King himself. Not too shabby.

This latest stunt is one in a series leading up to a massive prize giveaway that includes tickets to the Ford 300 Nationwide and Ford 400 NASCAR races and flat-screen televisions. Ford will also give one lucky winner the keys to a 2011 Ford Fiesta, and if the company happens to take the win at the Ford 400, it will give 43 lucky winners their own unique Fiesta. You can head over to the 43 Fiestas site for more details, and hop the jump for a look at the video.

Popular Mechanics has detailed 11 great moments in the bending and breaking of NASCAR rules, which include a cheating incident and ejection in the very first series race in 1949, an inflated basketball to circumvent gas tank capacity and frame rails loaded with BBs to get around weight restrictions.

And although a stricter rule book and the Car of Tomorrow might make “rules violations” harder ever year, it certainly hasn’t stopped: a site that keeps track of NASCAR penalties shows the series has docked five teams five teams already this year. Perhaps that’s because, as Darryl Waltrip said after getting busted in 1976, “If you don’t cheat, you look like an idiot.”
