Though sales of the Elizabeth-produced sedan continue to slide in Australia, a Commodore V8 will be exported to America where it will be sold with the Chevrolet SS Performance badge. In that guise, it would also star for the heartland brand in the NASCAR stock car racing series, which runs second only to Formula One in global popularity. Holden has been testing left-hand drive cars on public roads in Victoria in recent weeks and running it head-to-head with one of its strongest potential rivals, the Dodge Charger, as it finalises its end of the important new deal. Motorsport sources in the USA hint that an announcement of the Chevrolet SS program is imminent, including the Holden connection. The coming VF Commodore as the donor car for the program ticks the boxes for American muscle car fans, and NASCAR stock car racing as well, thanks to its V8 engine, large body and rear-wheel drive. Former GM Holden president Mark Reuss, now the head of GM operations in the US and a known fan and supporter of the Commodore, dodged Carsguide’s questions on a link between the SS program and the Commodore. Holden chairman Mike Devereux also refused to comment on the strengthening rumours in the US, which were triggered by the announcement. Full-scale testing of the racer is expected to begin soon, and the bodywork expected to be revealed at the same time.(Jayski)

What made you make the move from Indy racing to NASCAR?

Sam’s goal when he started racing in Indy was to compete for the Indy 500, and was lucky enough to fulfill that dream by the of 20 let alone expand that dream of winning the Indy 500 by the age of26

Sam had run some Nation wide races along with IROC. He’s sponsor was looking to go Cup racing. So the next challenge came in the fact that he would like to put his name by Mario Andretti and AJ Foyt as a winner of Indy 500 and Daytona 500. He came to NASCAR for the challenge and is still finding it challenging.

How different do you find the tracks that you have raced both series at?

In some ways it’s easier to throw out things he knew. When he first came to NASCAR he should have had a little lower expectation because his were very hi. He felt he had to really prove himself.

I asked about his favorite tracks since he had raced some in both cars. Sam said his first time to Pocono he loved it as he ran really well there and then when went back had a really bad day. Next time he drove for Front Row and had a good day for them. He feels best at Phoenix and Richmond.

Sam will be driving 2 Cup races this season, one was this past weekend’s Kansas race where he finished 19th. He will also be driving in the fall Talladega race. These races were picked because he is using his Nationwide crew and they are off on those weekends which give them more experience in the Cup series. SKP is the sponsor and very dedicated to Penske Racing by being on cars in both NASCAR series and Indy.

I asked how Sam felted about the competition in the Nation wide series now that as many of the cup drivers aren’t racing in it full time. Sam feels that teams are giving more thought to who they put in the car.

I was curious as to which race was bigger to him the Indy 500, Daytona 500 or the Brickyard. Sam responded the Indy 500 is the tradition, Daytona 500 you have to have friends. But what would be something he would like is to be called the winner of both the Indy 500 and the Brickyard.

I asked same about his impression of the new Indy cars. Pete was a boring race; drivers playing nicely by Long Beach, the third race the gloves had come off. There was more passing so that rates a thumbs up. He says both Indy and NASCAR are looking at ways to improve the safety of the sport and that often leads drivers to have a false security.

You can find Sam in the #12 Wurth car this weekend in the Nationwide Series at Richmond. He is 4th in points. You can also catch him on Speed Center.
