France blames NASCAR’s downfall on Earnhardt
Overall NASCAR television ratings were down about 13 percent in 2007 as compared to 2006. But NASCAR chairman Brian France said during a Reuters Media Summit in New York Tuesday that he was not worried NASCAR’s popularity is slowing. “The margin of error for all the sports to manage their business smarter is more narrow,”…
“It would have helped if he would have been competitive,” said France. “He didn’t win an event and he certainly didn’t make our playoffs. And that’s unhelpful if you’re trying to build ratings.”

Dale runs eye over V8s
NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr will be a surprise spectator at the final round of the V8 Supercar Series at Phillip Island.
Earnhardt, one of the biggest names in American motor racing, will fly in by helicopter from Melbourne with a group of mates and be hosted by Holden’s motorsport hierarchy.
His presence will, momentarily at least, deflect some of the focus from the nail-biting stoush in the four-way fight for the Aussie championship.

Daytona 500 Flags Will Go To Space
Three Daytona 500 green flags will be launched on the space shuttle Atlantis next week as part of the race’s 50th anniversary celebration, as well as NASA’s 50th anniversary, the Orlando Sentinel reported Thursday. The newspaper said NASA came up with the idea to link the two anniversaries earlier this year, and the space agency and Daytona International Speedway are trying to arrange promotional events with astronauts and drivers. A joint NASCAR driver/Atlantis crew news conference is possible during the shuttle’s 11-day mission next month. Atlantis is scheduled to lift off form Cape Canaveral next Friday.
France Still Wants New York Track
Almost a year ago, International Speedway Corp - which is majority owned by NASCAR’s France family - said it would no longer proceed with plans to build a race track on Staten Island in New York. A similar plan in the Seattle area fell by the wayside as well. But NASCAR chairman Brian France says they haven’t given up hope. “New York, Seattle, Denver - all are markets that are interesting to us, in particular New York,” France told the Reuters Media Summit in New York. “Staten Island is not an option, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t others.”

Penske Racing to form test team: #2-Kurt Busch said Penske Racing has plans to form a designated test team to prepare for the 2008 Sprint Cup Series season when all 36 races will feature the car of tomorrow. “We need more laps, more time with the new car to be more competitive,” said Busch, who finished seventh in points this year, following the NMPA Myers Bothers Awards Luncheon at Cipriani’s. With the addition of new teammate Sam Hornish Jr. in the #77 Dodge, the fourth team is expected to focus solely on testing. Busch said teammate Ryan Newman, Hornish, himself or an “outside driver” could all be involved in the tests. Busch, who has already tested at Atlanta, said the remainder of his offseason schedule includes scheduled stops at Daytona International Speedway, Lakeland, California and Las Vegas. Nashville is also a possibility if the weather cooperates, he said. With the Cup series already running twice in the COT at Bristol this year, Busch is comfortable heading into the first handful of races in ‘08. “We feel like we’re prepared really well for the first five or six, then we hit tracks like Texas [and Charlotte], and that’s where the teams that are ready to go will prevail,” he said, adding, “I hope not to be in a Cup car until January. I might end up doing a shakedown test for the Rolex 24. Penske’s putting together a team. It might be double top secret until now. But we’re having some fun with that.”(SceneDaily.com)(11-30-2007)

Tilley, team principal of aspiring touring car entrants Encke Sport, will take part in his debut test at the Atlanta Motor Speedway on December 7th at the wheel of a Chevy Monte Carlo in preparation for the 2008 season. “All my life I’ve had one interest, racing cars and winning,” he said. “To be given a chance to prove myself in the ARCA series is a very special opportunity that I could not turn down.” Tilley will be mentored initially by former NASCAR driver Randy Baker who said he was looking to help the Briton made an impact in his American move. “We are very excited about working with Ed,” he said. “His career has been on hold over the past year as Ed took some time out due to a family bereavement, but we are looking forward to working with him and his sponsors to help him reach his goals in motorsport. For your banquet pleasure?
Jay Mohr won’t be back to fling his barbs and witticisms at Friday’s Nextel Cup Awards Ceremony, but there will be someone filling that role. David Spade will this year’s “featured performer,” which is curious since he now stars on a CBS comedy called “Rules of Engagement” even though CBS is not involved in NASCAR coverage in any way. The musical performer this year will, predictably, be Kelly Clarkson. Clarkson has become the unofficial Official Pop Songstress of NASCAR after performing at the 2007 Daytona 500 and taking part in an advertising campaign for the sport this year.Jerry Punch will serve as master of ceremonies. The banquet will be carried live on ESPN Classic with a replay beginning at 11:30 p.m. on ESPN2.

NEW YORK, N.Y. — XM Satellite Radio sports anchor Claire B Lang is broadcasting a special edition of her show “Dialed In” live from the hub of activity during NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Champions Week.
“Dialed In” airs weekdays on XM Sports Nation (XM channel 144) 4 pm – 7 pm ET. This week, Claire is broadcasting from the center of the Champions Week action live from the storied Waldorf Astoria hotel in Manhattan.
Fans nationwide can tune into the events and activities of Champions week as special guests drop by the XM Broadcast suite at the Waldorf to hang out with Claire. Guests include champion Jimmie Johnson and top NASCAR drivers Clint Boyer, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, and more. Since the suite is located in the middle of all the action, the guests are many, and as Lang explains, “It’s like hanging out in the event hotel with everyone in the sport. We’re broadcasting live on the air so that race fans are in the middle of it all as if they were right here in the room.”
Claire will also be out and about to meet fans, interview drivers, attend all the parties and galas, and report back live each day with the inside stories as only she can tell them. From a welcome from a member of Engine Company 44 of the FDNY to interviews with top New York journalists to fans on the street and the movers and shakers of the sport, fans will get it all on “Dialed In” with Claire B.
For Thursday’s edition of “Dialed In,” Claire will host her traditional team party to salute the championship team live on the air from her suite at the Waldorf as she and the #48 team toast the stories of the season.

Future of McGill Motorsports in Doubt: Crew chief Ricky Pearson has denied rumors that yet another Nationwide Series team, #36-McGill Motorsports, has closed its doors. Pearson says however that the team is dependent upon sponsorship and that they have been put on guard that a decision should be coming within the next few weeks. He adds that barring the team does find the needed funding they would like to continue with Jeremy Clements, “Even if it’s a limited schedule.”(TheHotLap.com)(11-29-2007)
Farm Bureau to Sponsor Gibbs: MORE: Joe Gibbs Racing announced it has entered into a sponsorship agreement with Southern Farm Bureau Insurance Company of Jackson, Mississippi for the 2008 racing season. Farm Bureau Insurance will make its initial entrance into NASCAR as a primary sponsor of the #18 Nationwide Series team. The Farm Bureau Insurance #18 car will make its debut at Atlanta followed by events at Darlington, Kentucky, Daytona, Richmond and Texas. The driver lineup will consist of Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano.(MCG Sports PR)(11-23-2007)
AND: As soon as officials at Joe Gibbs Racing heard the rumor that Nationwide was looking at doing something in NASCAR, JGR made NASCAR aware of its relationship with Farm Bureau. They explained the relationship and showed NASCAR signed copies of the agreement. NASCAR alerted Nationwide, and Nationwide and NASCAR have been very willing to work through this preexisting contract. JGR cannot renew the Farm Bureau sponsorship in the NASCAR Nationwide Series beyond 2008, but they can move the sponsorship to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.(JGR team spokesman)(11-29-2007)
Armando Fitz Support Changes to Busch Qualifying for Cup Drivers: Fitz supports any kind of change if it served to let the Nationwide Series develop its own identity. “I definitely think it’s necessary and I would support it,” Fitz declared. “Kevin Harvick is third in points and he’s run 22 or 24 of 33 races. Here’s what NASCAR has to decide. What is the Nationwide Series? They have to decide what its purpose is. Is it to develop drivers and crew chiefs and pit crew guys? Are we going to have our own identity or are we just going to be a mini Cup Series? Here’s Fitz’s proposal. If you look at it from the perspective of the privateer teams, it makes sense, and it even makes sense if you look at it from a track promoter’s standpoint. “If you have 20 Cup guys in the race, don’t let them have a guaranteed starting spot,” Fitz began. “They should be racing for those last 13 spots, not Eric McClure, not Kyle Krisiloff … not the guys who have been there all year long. If you have 15 Nationwide guys against 20 Cup guys, that’s not going to make a difference, but Jeff Burton should have to be out-qualifying Harvick and David Ragan and Edwards. He shouldn’t have to be out-qualifying Eric McClure and Kyle Krisiloff. If you have 13 Cup guys in the race, do you think that’s going to make a difference in the attendance? If they get the points, I do think it is an issue when you have Harvick third in points when he’s only running 24 races. That person should have to earn his way in. He should be out-qualifying his peers, not the guys who have been there all year.”(NASCAR.com)(11-28-2007)
Cale Gale Competing in Snowball Derby: Cale Gale, driver for Kevin Harvick Inc., will be driving in the 40th Annual Snowball Derby and the Snowflake 100. Cale Gale is also helping to promote “Communities Caring for Kids Christmas” at the Snowball Derby this weekend. (Gale PR)(11-28-2007)
#14 Team Closing? hearing that the #14 team has announced the closing of their operations effective Friday, due to no sponsorship. The team competed the full season with Kyle Krisiloff driving. Wallgreens joined them as a sponsor in June.(11-28-2007)

After reuniting to form a Busch Series team and running only one season of competition, the No. 14 Haas-Carter team has shut down, many sources have said. Effective Tuesday the race shop has closed its doors leaving Kyle Krisiloff in line with many other Nationwide Series drivers on the lookout for a ride for 2008. Krisiloff had two top-10 finishes in 2007: a sixth place finish on the road course in Montreal and a fifth place finish in Talladega. A team spokesman declined to comment. (11-28-07)

Wyler-Gaughan falls thru? UPDATE 2: South Point Racing disbanding: Gaughan talking to another team: Hearing that the Wyler Racing / South Point Racing-Gaughan ‘merger’ has fallen through for the 2008 season. No further details on what caused the deal to fall apart.(11-28-2007)
UPDATE: Brendan Gaughan told Sirius NASCAR Radio’s Sirius Speedway Wednesday that the announced merger with Wyler Racing is off, and that his family’s South Point Racing team will disband. Gaughan offered very few details on the split, saying only that, “It’s unfortunate when individuals put themselves ahead of the team.” He said he is currently looking for a new position, and hopes to take 10-12 of his South Point crew members with him.(Sirius.com)(11-28-2007)
UPDATE 2: Gaughan said about a dozen South Point Racing employees committed to move with him to the new team. He said he is working on a deal to drive for an existing truck team next year, but it must include positions for his teammates. “Those guys have waited with me and for me. I could probably take a ride and leave everybody behind, but I don’t want to do that,” Gaughan said.(Las Vegas Review Journal)(11-29-2007)

Records Fall in Wake of Bill Davis Racing’s Dominating Season
11-28-2007 | TruckSeries.com Report
Records Fall in Wake of Bill Davis Racing’s Dominating Season Bill Davis Racing’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series stable had an incredible 2007 season. The three teams together posted nine wins, 30 top-five finishes, 42 top-10 finishes and 12 poles. The No. 5 Tundra driver of Mike Skinner led the team with five victories, 17 top-five finishes, 20 top-10 finishes and 11 poles en route to a second-place finish in the NCTS Championship standings. Skinner set the NCTS record of most poles in a single season (11) after breaking the record (10) he set in 1995. With Skinner’s 11 poles and developmental driver Ryan Mathews’ pole earlier in the season, BDR now owns the single-season pole record in both the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and NASCAR Busch Series. Skinner also led the NCTS field in a number of categories, including driver rating (116.1), average start (2.5), average running position (6.54), laps in the top 15 (3678) and laps led (1105 laps, 1217.31 miles). Skinner also set a new NCTS record of most race winnings in a single season ($737,520).

Pro Cup Regulars Hope for Derby Glory
USAR
Thursday, November 29, 2007 9:26:00 AM
Myrtle Beach, S.C.-While the Hooters Pro Cup Series will be heading to Florida next week as part of the Performance Racing Industry trade show, a horde of Pro Cup drivers are already in the Sunshine State, trying to add their name to the list of winners in the prestigious Snowball Derby.
However, several Pro Cup veterans already have their names etched in history. Bobby Gill and Gary St. Amant have won the historic race twice and Clay Rogers has one victory.
St. Amant won the event in 1992 and 2000, while Gill won the race in 1993 and 1997. Clay Rogers is the defending winner of the event.
All three are back again this season, but many more familiar names in the Pro Cup ranks will be trying to join their comrades as Snowball winners this year
Pro Cup regulars Benny Gordon, Randy Gentry, Matt Hawkins, Jeff Fultz and Gary Helton are on the entry list for the event.
