Diversity Program A Sham Says Henderson
The father of Franklin (Tennessee) racer Joe Henderson III said he is frustrated, discouraged and angry over his son’s treatment in a NASCAR diversity program but is not considering suing anyone as was reported last week by the New York Times. “The paper took some things I said out of context,” said the senior Henderson. “I’m not going to sue anybody. I just asked my attorney to check the contracts to see what our options are.” The lengthy Times story — sharply critical of NASCAR for its continued small minority presence — said Henderson is considering suing NASCAR, his son’s former MB2 Motorsports team and Access Marketing which oversees the Drive for Diversity program. The Times quoted Henderson as saying NASCAR’s diversity program is a “sham … a smoke-and-mirror program.” On Monday he qualified his remarks: “Yes I’m upset over how Joe has been treated, but I’m not going to cause problems for anybody. I just want folks to know that his problems were not all his fault.” Joe Henderson III, 21, said he didn’t feel that he got a fair chance to prove himself before being dropped from the program earlier this year. Another minority driver, Jesus Hernandez, took over the ride, won two Late Model races, and MB2 general manager Jay Frey said Hernandez earned a chance to run some Craftsman Truck Series races next season….More - insiderracingnews.com/Daily2006/Nov/111506.html

Hoosier back in NASCAR if Goodyear strike continues? An Oct. 5 system-wide strike by some 15,000 United Steelworkers union members at 16 Goodyear Tire and Rubber manufacturing plants might have provided Lakeville, Indiana-based Hoosier Tire and Rubber a chance to get rolling again in NASCAR’s three top racing divisions, sources close to the situation said. [see past news about the strike on my NASCAR Sponsors page www.jayski.com/teams/nascar-sponsors.htm]. A meeting between Hoosier and NASCAR occurred last week at the latter’s Daytona Beach headquarters to establish a contingency plan that likely will kick into action by the end of November so that NASCAR’s Nextel Cup, Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series will have race tires on which to compete after the sanctioning body’s first event of the 2007 season at Daytona International Speedway. Presently, non-striking Goodyear workers — most of whom normally perform white-collar duties — are at full-tilt-boogie in producing enough tires to satisfy demand for Daytona Beach’s Speed Weeks at NASCAR’s 2.5-mile “home” track. But it’s Goodyear’s inability to meet demand for the rest of the 2007 race schedule that has caused concern at NASCAR. For 2007 Goodyear currently sees itself as producing tires only for Nextel Cups three biggest races held at Daytona, Charlotte and Indianapolis. With roughly a three-month lead time needed for manufacturing lines to ramp-up and complete tire production, such leaves Goodyear needing to settle the dispute with its workers no later than about the end of next week so that tires can be made ready for the February 25, 2007, California Speedway race. “From everything I’ve heard,” said one well-placed Wall Street insider consulted for this story, “Goodyear is looking to outsource the manufacture of its product in the long haul.” See full story at Motorsport.com.(11-16-2006)

Nemechek to Pull Triple Duty for First Time in Career: For the first time in his racing career Joe Nemechek will compete in NASCAR’s three professional divisions in the same weekend at the same track. The triple-header weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway kicks off Friday evening for Nemechek, who will pilot the #46 Chevy for Morgan-Dollar Motorsports in the Craftsman Truck Series. It will be his third race of the season in the #46 entry. The second part of the weekend schedule for Nemechek will be his return to the Busch Series where he has claimed 16 career victories. His only other Busch race of the season was the February opener at Daytona International Speedway. Crossing over and reaching back to his roots in off-road racing, Gordon will participate in the upcoming 39th running of the legendary Baja 1000, the sixth and final race of the 2006 SCORE Desert Series season. A former two-time winner of the event, Gordon will once again attempt to reclaim one of racings most coveted titles. Driving his #83 Red Bull/Toyo Tires-sponsored Chevy CK1500 Trophy Truck, Gordon will make the trek through the Baja peninsula for the majority of the race before turning over the helm to 19-year old phenom, Andy McMillin. The race runs November 15-18, 2006.(RGM PR) and keep up with Robby and his team in the Baja race at RobbyGordon.com.(11-16-2006)
Spencer to the #73 team? NASCAR.com’s Ryan Smithson reports “am hearing that Jimmy Spencer is back part-time in the Nextel Cup Series next year with a new team called Revelocity Racing. It was formed by a group of four businessmen from West Virginia, and they plan on running all the Car of Tomorrow races in 2007.” Smithson also heard the team also talked to Ward Burton, but eventually went with Spencer.(NASCAR.com), more info on the Revelocity Racing team on my #73 Team News and Links page, they supposedly are teaming up with PPI Motorsports.(11-16-2006)

Tony Stewart owns the best points finish by a Raybestos Rookie in the sports modern era (post 1971), placing fourth in the championship standings in 1999. The contract with Wind Shear Inc. calls for a 180-mph wind tunnel in Concord, N.C., with a rolling road to test full-scale NASCAR race cars. The $40 million wind tunnel will be ‘the first of its kind for the NASCAR community,’ Jacobs said Tuesday in a news release.

While Jeff Gordon is mathematically out of the championship once Jimmie Johnson starts the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Gordon still has a shot at the title - as the co-owner of Johnson’s car. Gordon has four driver titles to his name in the Cup series, but he has never won a co-owner title with Rick Hendrick in Johnson’s Hendrick Motorsports team.

Dale Jarrett will be making his final start for Robert Yates Racing in the #88 UPS Ford Fusion this Sunday.
Jarrett Discusses Racing at Homestead-Miami Speedway
How tough will this weekend be with it being your final race with Robert Yates Racing?
“For probably the last couple weeks as the races have run down I have been thinking about this race and some of the memories we had here. It’s hard to believe that 12 years at Robert Yates Racing is coming to an end. Robert and the Yates family have treated me like family and it will be very difficult when I climb out of that car for the last time on Sunday. I owe a lot of people a lot. I think Saturday and Sunday will be tough days and I hope to be able to at least leave Homestead with a solid effort for Robert, the 88 team and the entire organization.” (Elevation Group PR)

Matt Kenseth, hitch hiker?: When NASCAR driver Matt Kenseth gets ready to depart Homestead-Miami Speedway after driving in NASCAR’s season finale on Sunday, he’ll have to ‘bum’ a ride home. Kenseth, who trails Jimmie Johnson by 63-points heading into the final Chase race, lost his personal automobile – a Lincoln Navigator – to Leigh Humphrey as part of a national sweepstakes from Ameriquest Mortgage Co. Humphrey, 69, a retired optometrist from Ocala, Fla., was randomly selected from more than 200,000 entries in Ameriquest’s “Drive It Home Sweepstakes” which entitled him to win one of the Ameriquest Racing team members’– Kenseth, Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards, Mark Martin or team owner Jack Roush – personal cars. Humphrey and his wife, Patricia, also earned an all-expense-paid trip to attend championship weekend and will receive the car keys in a presentation by Kenseth and his Roush teammates on Saturday. “Now that Leigh owns my car, I guess I will have to start ‘bumming’ rides from Greg (Biffle) and Carl (Edwards),” quipped Kenseth (Alan Taylor Comm. Bobby Jr. is set to return to the Busch Series full-time next season and original plans called for his father to take back over the truck ride. Off-Season in ARCA, More On Than Off
TOLEDO OH (11-15-06) – So what do you guys do in the off-season? That’s a common question we get in the world of ARCA, and one that deserves an answer.

NASCAR personalities getting involved in holiday productions is nothing new but this announcement sure grabbed my attention. Three-time Winston Cup champion Darrell Waltrip will be appearing in the Nashville Ballet’s version of the Nutcracker. No he is not playing one of the Nutcracker soldiers, DW is playing a character called “Mother Ginger.”..
