Chip Ganassi Racing Featured On SPEED Special
Chip Ganassi Racing will be the focus this week in a SPEED TV special called Racing Incorporated which will take viewers inside the business of racing with a close-up look at the motorsports operations of team owner Chip Ganassi. The pair of one-hour specials will air this Wednesday, Nov. 15 and Thursday, Nov. 16, at 8 p.m. ET & PT (re-played at 11 pm ET). Racing Incorporated was given unprecedented access by the team to its race shops in Indianapolis, Ind. and Concord, N.C. over a several weeks this past summer for a behind the scenes look at the inner workings of Ganassi’s IndyCar, NASCAR, and Grand American Sports Car Series operations.
Ford Executive ~ Ford 400 Honorary Starter
Alan Mulally, recently named President and Chief Executive Officer of Ford Motor Company, will serve as Honorary Starter for Sunday’s NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Ford 400 season-finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Mulally will wave the green flag to get the final race of the season underway as NASCAR crowns its 2006 Season Champion. Additionally, Edsel B. Ford II, a member of the Ford Board of Directors, will serve as Grand Marshal for the event.
Martin’s Final Race In No. 6
Martin will exit the No. 6 AAA Ford Fusion after Sunday’s race at Homestead. Can you recall where you were and what you were doing on Feb. 14, 1988? Mark Martin can. He was behind the wheel of the Roush Racing No. 6 Ford, forging forward on what would become one of the most successful runs in not only NASCAR, but all of sports history. Martin has spent the majority of his days since behind the wheel of the No. 6; 19 years worth to be exact. That will all come to an end this weekend, when Martin takes his final ride in the Roush Racing No. 6 Ford.
“It’s actually hard to believe that it’s actually here,” said Martin in reference to Sunday’s race at Homestead. “It’s one of those things where you know it has been coming for a while, but you still can’t believe that it’s almost here. I’ve been in that car for a long time – 19 years to be exact. It’s a part of me and I’m a part of it. Now the time has come for me to hand that over to someone else, but it’s going to be a different feeling for sure.”
To put Martin’s 19-year run in the same car in perspective, seven other current drivers, who are on the preliminary entry list for this weekend’s race at Homestead, also started that Daytona 500 in 1988. Of those seven drivers, all have raced for at least four different owners since that time. In fact, the seven combined have driven for 55 different owners and driven cars with a total of 57 different numbers. All while Martin forged on in the No. 6.

Championship Scenarios Heading to Homestead: Any driver within 156 points is still mathematically eligible for the Nextel Cup Series championship. So, going into the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, the following drivers can still win the title:
Jimmie Johnson 6332 points
Matt Kenseth -63
Kevin Harvick -90
Denny Hamlin -90
Dale Earnhardt Jr. -115
Jimmie Johnson is assured of winning the championship if any of the following occur:
Finish of 12th or better and leading no laps
Finish of 13th or better and leading at least one lap
Finish of 15th or better and leading the most laps
If Kenseth wins the Ford 400 and both Johnson and Kenseth tie in the point standings, they would also tie at the first tiebreaker with five wins each. The next tiebreaker is second place finishes. The advantage would go to Johnson, who currently has six runner-up finishes, better than the three runner-up finishes by Kenseth.(NASCAR Statistical Services)(11-13-2006)
DEI not purchasing RYR: Dale Earnhardt Inc. Vice President Richie Gilmore disputed reports that his company could be buying all or part of Robert Yates Racing. During the race weekend at Phoenix International Raceway, DEI Technical Director Steve Hmiel confirmed that the company was in discussions concerning a purchase of at least part of RYR. He said the company could purchase RYR’s shop and equipment, but that it could also acquire the #88 team and its owner points. The owner points could be transferred to the third DEI team of Paul Menard. On Tuesday, though, Gilmore said that the story had grown out of proportion. “Stories definitely grow in the sport and maybe it’s a slow time of the year with the Chase not being quite as tight as it should be,” Gilmore said. “It’s one of them stories that grew. I told [DEI team owner] Teresa [Earnhardt], maybe if Teresa was going to go get a cup of coffee at 8 o’clock in the morning, by noontime around here she’s going to buy a Starbucks. So I think the story kind of grew that way. It grew legs for sure. When asked if there was anything to the reports that DEI could be considering purchasing all or part of the team, Gilmore’s answer was succinct. “No,” he said. At Phoenix, when asked about the situation, team owner Robert Yates didn’t deny he was in talks with DEI and said he planned to tell the #88 team its fate before this weekend’s race at Homestead. The #88 has no driver and no sponsor for 2007 since Dale Jarrett and UPS are moving over to the Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota team.(SceneDaily.com)(11-15-2006)

Whitt to drive the #72 at Homestead: Brandon Whitt will make his second Nextel Cup appearance this weekend in Miami for #72 CJM Racing. “We are very pleased with Brandon’s efforts this past weekend in Phoenix,” states co-owner Bryan Mullet. “Brandon showed great poise the entire weekend; unfortunately we ran into some mechanical problems on Sunday which cut his Cup debut short. Brandon has shown this team that he has what it takes to compete at this level. We are looking forward to putting together a very solid weekend heading into this off-season.” CJM Racing will announce 2007 plans in the upcoming weeks.(CJM Racing PR)(11-15-2006)

Fox Sports Net Signs New Racing Themed Reality Series; Winner to Drive in Busch Race: Fox Sports Net has signed a broadcast deal with BCC Sports to air a new reality series, “All American Rookie” which takes 30 rookie race drivers and pits their skill, endurance and tenacity against each other, then against 10 of the best of NASCAR in a final ‘race war’ for the crowning of the “All American Rookie”, a title that earns the winner a sponsored contract to race in the Busch Series. According to NASCAR Busch Series champion, Joe Nemechek, a producer of the show and mentor to the rookies, “We felt all along that this was the right approach to bringing fans a true view of the sport and eventually open the way for a fan to one day compete to become a professional in stock car racing.” Nemechek is being supported by 10 other NASCAR drivers on the show to be involved as judges and mentors to the 30 rookie drivers that will start the show. The final five Rookies will actually race against these champion drivers and will all have to prove themselves worthy of a spot on the track. The driver emerging victorious will earn a sponsored contract to race for NEMCO in the Busch Series. The show moves into production in late November at Daytona International Speedway, filming at five other race tracks across the country, with production running through to the end of January. A broadcast schedule is timed for early spring as the NASCAR season begins on FOX.(BBC Sports PR)(11-14-2006)

Nicole Addison: Defying the Odds
Nicole Addison, rear tire changer on the No. 10 Power Stroke Diesel by International race team in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, gets a lot of attention for being the first female over the wall crew member in NASCAR’s top three divisions. Although her chosen profession and accomplishments set her apart from most women, for Nicole, reaching this level in the racing profession has even deeper meaning because of what she went through to get here. Born in Tucson, Ariz., Addison experienced a childhood most parents hope and pray against. When she was six years old, Addison was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer and was given just five years to live. Unable to take the drugs prescribed to her, Addison and her family could only wait for fate to step in. “I don’t remember much about it,” Addison says now.

What Would Brian Have Said?
By Dennis Michelsen – Last week NASCAR’s Chairman Brian France struck something with his Lexus automobile on the way home. The original article about the incident that appeared in the Daytona Beach News Journal made it sound like no big deal, just a spilled soda in the car. But the next day the 911 call to the Daytona Beach Police sounded much more ominous… MORE

Chase for Mediocrity
By Dennis Michelsen – In all sports there are a variety of clichés that describe the playoff season. The cream rises to the top. The big possum walk late. Superstars are born in the playoffs. Everyone remembers the big playoff games. The game winning homeruns and the amazing touchdown passes. In the previous two NASCAR playoffs the teams in the hunt increased their share of top fives and top tens by over 20% versus the regular season. But this year in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Chase for the Championship teams have stumbled badly..
