Earles’ Martinsville Speedway Dream Gains Historic Status - www.catchfence.com/press/101707u.html

Chevrolet to Award 50 Race Fans a One-of-a-Kind Daytona 500 Experience: To help celebrate the 50th running of the Daytona 500, Chevrolet will be providing 50 race fans from 50 different states a once-in-a-lifetime weekend experience at the Daytona 500 on Feb. 17, 2008, while 10 of those individuals will win a brand new Chevy Impala. “The Chevy Great American Race Experience was created to honor the golden anniversaries of two American icons,” said Ed Peper, general manager of Chevrolet. “Our long history in NASCAR and our valued partnership with Daytona International Speedway allows us to provide unique, first-hand experiences to 50 winners who will help celebrate these significant milestones at the ‘World Center of Racing.’” Beginning on Oct. 16 and through Dec. 3, fans can visit Chevy.com/Daytona500 to enter. “We’re excited to be able to host Chevrolet’s special guests at “The World Center of Racing” during this historic Daytona 500 weekend,” said Speedway President Robin Braig. “Chevrolet’s promotion is a great way to have fans take part in the most anticipated event in racing history.” Each individual randomly chosen to represent their state will win a trip for two to the Daytona 500 weekend including two tickets for all three NASCAR events taking place that weekend – the Chevy Silverado 250 Craftsman Truck Series event, the Camping World 300 Busch Series race and the 50th running of the Daytona 500. The experience also includes VIP behind-the-scenes access to the Daytona 500, a lap around historic Daytona International Speedway, private Chevy parties, meet and greets with Team Chevy drivers as well as airfare and four nights of lodging. Additionally, 10 of the winners will be selected during the race weekend to win a 2008 50th Anniversary Chevy Impala. After 50 years the Impala is one of America’s top 10 selling vehicles (during the 2006 model year) offering power and efficiency in an attractive package. From its legendary small-block V8 to Active Fuel Management and E85 capability on select 2008 models, the Impala is a proven winner on and off the race track. Drag Strip Gains Speed - City Panel Bows To “The Billion Dollar Baby” Bruton Smith After He Threatens To Take His Ball (Lowe’s Motor Speedway) And Go Home: The owner of Lowe’s Motor Speedway got approval Tuesday from one city panel to build a drag strip near the speedway. The Planning and Zoning Commission in Concord, N.C., approved the drag strip on property owned by Bruton Smith. The City Council, which cited neighbors’ concerns about noise when it voted Oct. 1 to halt the $60 million project, is scheduled to hold a public hearing Oct. 26. In that earlier vote, the City Council approved zoning that banned drag strips near the speedway. After Smith threatened to close the speedway and relocate it, the council asked planning officials to consider rezoning the area so drag strips are allowed.

Team Red Bull buying Yates’ shop? UPDATE no: “Robert Yates did contact us awhile back to see if we were interested in talking with him about purchasing his building or his teams. We weren’t - so the conversation ended there. We’re committed to building our team from scratch and making our cars competitive. We don’t have plans to buy anyone else’s team.”(Red Bull VP of Competition, Guenther Steiner statement)(10-18-2007)

#2 Hauler driver wins Hauler Challenge: Congratulations to Miller Lite Dodge Team’s chief transport driver Bill “Stump” Lewis for coming home the winner in this year’s Freightliner Run Smart Hauler Challenge. The final stage of the contest was held last Saturday morning at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, with “Stump” placing first and taking the $35,000 grand prize. “Stump” and wife, Cindy, share the truck-driving duties for the #2 Penske Racing Dodge Team. “I am extremely proud of this award and thrilled to have brought the honor to our Penske Racing Miller Lite Dodge Team,” said “Stump,” now a two-time winner of the annual NASCAR truck-driving contest. “As for that $35 grand, I think Cindy already has it spent on some construction work we are getting done at our house.” The couple is celebrating winning the award this week at the annual “Biketoberfest” in Daytona Beach.(TRPR)(10-18-2007)

Chase Notes: The odds are pretty good that Sunday’s race at Martinsville will boil down to a Jeff Gordon vs. Jimmie Johnson battle. The two teammates have won five of the last seven at Martinsvill. Clint Bowyer has finishes of 22-23-11 in three starts, so a top five would be huge and keep him within one race of the lead. Jeff Burton moved into stage spot #10 with his fourth at Lowe’s. He leads Martin Truex by +12, and Matt Kenseth by +76 [only the top 10 go to NYC and the stage at the banquet]. Carl Edwards will have to get scorching hot to get back into Chase contention from fifth place and 240 points out, and Martinsville presents an uphill challenge as “Flip” doesn’t have a top 10 in six starts. Tony Stewart has to still be considered a contender with the races coming up, but he must put five straight top 10s or better together. It’s hard to count sixth place on back as being in reasonable contention at this point. Montoya is 21st in the Nextel Cup Series championship standings, 112 points ahead of 22nd-place Ragan. A Raybestos Rookie has finished in the top-10 in each of the last two Subway 500 (fall) races at Martinsville. Kyle Busch scored a ninth-place finish in 2005. Jeff Green will appear on NASCAR Angels: What is NASCAR Angels? Its a syndicated TV show, featuring former NASCAR champion, Rusty Wallace. Each week, the Angels help one person or family by fixing up their car. Nothing unites America like the automobile. Across the country every day, millions of people turn the ignition and depend on their vehicles to get them where they need to go. That’s where the NASCAR Angels come in… The NASCAR Angels hit the road with a simple mission: to help people and to fix broken cars. It’s Extreme Home Makeover meets Pimp My Ride, NASCAR-style. The twist? The Angels dream team has only three days to complete the entire project. With the help of NASCAR partners, the NASCAR Angels fix rides and give people a NASCAR experience they’ll never forget. Everyone needs a helping hand once in a while. That’s NASCAR Angels…transforming cars, enhancing lives. Since everyone knows how much Jeff Green likes muscle cars and working on hot rods, he was chosen to help introduce the story of Jeff Bodenschatz, a husband and father who also enjoys fixing up old cars. Mr. Bodenschatz has always dreamed of rebuilding a 1968 Javelin, but when he fell ill with cancer, it sidelined his dream. With the help of the NASCAR Angels, Jeffs dream will now become a reality.(Best Buy Racing)(10-18-2007)

Kyle Busch & Steven Wallace enter Snowball Derby: Kyle Busch and Steven Wallace to race with the best short track racers in the country in the 40th Annual Snowball Derby at Pensacola, Florida’s Five Flags Speedway. Busch is no stranger to the Snowball Derby. He competed in the prestigious event as a 16-year-old in 2002, but bad luck relegated him to a disappointing 33rd-place finish. Now, the former West Coast Super Late Model and ASA racer will be getting back to his short track roots. Busch will be piloting his own #51 Chevrolet with support from the former Snowball Derby-winning team of Richie Wauters, who will also have Busch Series driver Steven Wallace, a former Snowball Derby winner himself, in their stable for this year’s Derby. For more information on the 40th Annual Snowball Derby event visit www.snowballderby.com

Rusty Wallace rumors untrue: there were some rumors floating around on Wednesday that ESPN/ABC would replace Rusty Wallace as it’s analyst of the Busch and Nextel Cup Series races [to be Nationwide and Sprint Cup in 2008] for the 2008 season. All ESPN and Wallace sources have told me this is NOT TRUE and Wallace will return in 2008. From ESPN: “Rusty Wallace is our guy. We have a long-term contract with him. He’s the voice of NASCAR on ESPN.” NORBY WILLIAMSON - ESPN Executive Vice President, Studio and Remote Production.(10-17-2007)

World Famous Jet Dragster Soars in to Atlanta Motor Speedway: Atlanta Motor Speedway’s pit road is usually reserved for high-powered drag cars and NEXTEL Cup stock cars, but it will resemble the flight deck of an aircraft carrier on Friday evening, Oct. 26 when the “F-16 Viper” jet dragster scorches down pit road. The jet engine-powered dragster will make its first pass immediately following Georgia-Pacific Nextel Cup Qualifying, traveling the length of a football field in just over one second, to kick-off the season championship round of the Castrol GTX Friday Night Drag bracket racing. The jet dragster will perform a second run after the conclusion of the final drag race. The dragster, which produces a 30-foot flame and rides on Nextel Cup tires, uses a General Electric engine creating 6,000 pounds of thrust and 5,700 horsepower; more horsepower than the first three rows of the starting line-up in the Sunday, Oct. 28 Pep Boys Auto 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race. Admission to watch the final round of the Castrol GTX Friday Night Drags Championship Bracket Race and the jet-powered dragster is included with the purchase of a ticket to Georgia-Pacific Nextel Cup Qualifying. Tickets are just $20 for the entire evening and can be obtained by calling the AMS ticket office at 1-877-9-AMS-TIX, or by visiting www.atlantamotorspeedway.com.(AMS PR)(10-18-2007)

Smith: ‘90 percent chance’ I’ll move speedway, Track would be razed, sold: Lowe’s Motor Speedway owner Bruton Smith now says there is a “90%” he will move his track out of Concord for another site around Charlotte. And if he leaves Concord, Smith said, he will raze the track and sell the property piecemeal. Smith’s comments to the Observer on Monday are the latest twist in an episode that began when the city of Concord moved to stop work on a $60 million drag strip on speedway property. After the City Council’s Oct. 1 vote to rezone the property to ban drag strips, Smith threatened to move the track. Last week, the city reversed its position on the drag strip and started talking about offering incentives to help reduce noise from the drag strip, a concern among neighbors. Smith said he would feel obligated to buy back the 52 condominiums at the speedway from their owners. A final decision on the move won’t be made until after the Concord City Council revisits the issue Oct. 26, Smith said. That meeting will be held at 6 p.m.; it originally had been scheduled for Oct. 24. Local officials are continuing to try to persuade Smith to stay put. Several state lawmakers approached him at Saturday’s Bank of America 500 race, telling him how much they appreciated his being in North Carolina, said state Rep. Linda Johnson, R-Cabarrus. Smith declined to encourage speculation that he was considering a move to Rock Hill, saying he has not disclosed where he is looking to move. He did say he was considering about 20 sites within an 18-mile radius of Charlotte/Douglas International Airport. Smith also has said he is willing to spend $350 million to abandon the Concord track and build another elsewhere in the Charlotte area.(in part from the Charlotte Observer)
AND Concord’s planning and zoning commission unanimously gave its blessing to a controversial drag strip near Lowe’s Motor Speedway Tuesday night, the latest move by the city to try to keep the track from leaving. The board mirrored the City Council’s retreat from its earlier opposition to the project. In a vote Oct. 1 that halted the $60 million drag strip project, the City Council banned drag strips as a permitted use on Smith’s property, citing neighbors’ concerns over noise. A public hearing, previously set for Oct. 24. is now scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 26. The planning board, after a 13-minute discussion Tuesday, recommended that the city council change its zoning ordinance back to allow drag strips on speedway property. Preliminary plans show the drag strip across from the speedway, north of The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway on U.S. 29, south of Tom Johnson Camping Center and beside the Rocky River.(Charlotte Observer)(10-17-2007)

Conservative racing brings Skinner more track success
It all started for Mike Skinner back in 1986, the year he made his Winston Cup debut for a small organization known as Zanworth Racing. He raced three races that season, making his debut at Martinsville. Skinner never finished on the lead lap, never finished higher than 22nd, yet a career was born.

The Championship Breakdown: South Georgia Motorsports Park
By Paul Warner
Wednesday, October 17, 2007 3:21:00 PM

Myrtle Beach, S.C.-With three races down in the Championship Series, it’s time to separate the contenders from the pretenders. Following the Dan Duncan Memorial Aaron’s 250 at South Georgia Motorsports Park, all the players will be known.

Right now, mathematically, 31 drivers are still in the hunt to become the overall Hooters Pro Cup Series National Champion and claim the $150,000 bonus that goes along with it.

Bobby Gill still holds the top spot, but Trevor Bayne closed to within 15 points with his win at Myrtle Beach. Mike Garvey is within earshot of the leaders, sitting just 54 points behind Gill.

With just 98 points between them, the top eight drivers still have a legitimate chance to take the title.

Brandon Ward still holds down the top spot in the Miller Lite Rookie of the Year program, leading Richard Boswell by 53 points. If Ward can hang on, the rookie could walk away with more than $40,000 in rookie bonuses.

Below is the top 20 in Championship Series points, a Myrtle Beach Review and a South Georgia Preview.

International Flare
Fresh Off Canadian Tire Series Title, Ranger Heads To The Toyota All-Star Showdown
Andrew Ranger is a special talent behind the wheel of a racecar – any racecar. And he heads to Irwindale this weekend looking to showcase that talent which earned him the 2007 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio championship.
He came into the 2007 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season with just one stock car race under his belt, but that wasn’t enough to deter the talented 20 year-old from Roxton Pond, Quebec. He made the move to NASCAR last winter from the ranks of the CHAMP Car World Series in which he finished 10th in points for both the 2005 and 2006 seasons. In 2005, at just 18 years of age, he became the youngest driver in series history to notch a podium finish.
That’s ancient history, though, for Ranger. His move to the heavier cars of NASCAR has been seamless. He picked up his first NASCAR win in the season’s second race of the year – his third start in a stock car. En route to his championship, he posted seven top-five and 10 top-10 finishes throughout the 12-race schedule.
The NASCAR Grand National Division cars that will be used in the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown are different from those used in the Canadian Tire Series, but Ranger does not foresee any difficulty in adjusting.
He will be driving a car owned by fellow Canadian Dick Midgley, owner of Midgley Motorsports of Victoria, B.C.
“Andrew is NASCAR’s Canadian national champion and with our base of operations in Canada, it seemed like a natural fit,” said Midgley.
Travis Bennett drove a Midgley car to a fourth-place finish in a NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series event at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Wash., this season.
“The cars are just a little heavier and have a few more horsepower,” said Ranger. “I really don’t think it will be that hard to get used to.”
On the track by himself, the adjustment may be easy, but he’ll have to do it with other drivers on the speedy 1/2-mile oval, most of which have plenty of experience in their equipment, as well as at Irwindale Speedway itself.
“That was the case all season long in the Canadian Tire Series,” Ranger said. “I’ve heard nothing but great things about the track. This is a great chance to compete against top drivers and an opportunity to showcase your talent in front of a people of influence in NASCAR.”

Former NASCAR Mexico Champion Lopez Is Making His Move
Former NASCAR Mexico Series champion Rogelio Lopez heads to Irwindale following his first full season in the NASCAR Busch East Series, where he has become a force to be reckoned with.
Lopez, 27, of Aquascalientes, Mexico scored his first career NASCAR Busch East Series victory at the fabled Music City Motorplex fairgrounds oval in Nashville, Tenn., midway through the season. As if punctuating his 2007 campaign, Lopez won his first career Budweiser Pole Award at New Hampshire International Speedway in September, and converted the start to a third-place finish. He finished the season seventh in series points with a record of five top-5s and six top-10s in 13 starts.
Lopez has the whole package needed for success, and he’s proven he’s for real. He’s also a bonifide star entering the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19 and 20. By virtue of his Music City win, Lopez also won a guaranteed starting position in the 250-lap all star race.
“We’re looking forward to the Toyota Showdown and we’re in pretty good shape,” Lopez said. “We have a good car. To win that race would be very important to me and for my sponsors and the team. It would be nice to end the season like that. We tested the car at Caraway Speedway (in Asheboro, N.C.) and I think we have a pretty good set-up. We’ve been strong on short tracks like Music City, and on big tracks like New Hampshire, so we’re looking forward to going to California.
“Our focus will be on running for the NASCAR Busch East Series championship next year. I think we have everything we need to do that.”
Lopez won the 2006 NASCAR Mexico Series championship. In 2007, he joined up with NASCAR Busch East Series team owner Dave Davis, crew chief Freddy Skaff, and promptly became a contender in the No. 03 Telmex/Lucas Oil Chevrolet. Lopez also has a place in NASCAR history as the first driver from Mexico to compete in a NASCAR Touring event with the series in 2005.
Like most of the tracks the NASCAR Busch East Series visited in 2007, Lopez has never laid eyes on Irwindale Speedway.
“I’ve never been to Irwindale Speedway, but I’ve talked to a lot of drivers who’ve been there,” Lopez said. “I think I’ve gotten some good advice, and I’m going to follow some guys who have been there like Sean Caisse in practice to see what they do.”
Lopez also takes a big picture of his racing career, hoping to use NASCAR’s ladder system to work his way up.
“Look at guys like Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex. They came up through the NASCAR Grand National Division, and they’re winning in the Cup Series now,” Lopez said. “Sean Caisse looks like he’s the next guy who is moving up. I’m hoping I can do the same. The NASCAR Busch East Series is very competitive. Teams like Joe Gibbs and DEI compete in our series. They are here because they know they can take drivers to the next level from here. It’s a great place for teams, drivers and sponsors. I hope we can move up, too. We want to prove ourselves next year. We’ll be working really, really hard to do that.”

Showdown stats
All-Star experience: Eight drivers have competed in all four previous Toyota All-Star Showdown events. Two of those drivers – Mike Duncan and Matt Kobyluck – have already secured a spot in this year’s event by virtue of winning a Grand National Division race this season. In addition to Duncan and Kobyluck, others to compete in all four previous events were Bryan Chew, Scott Gaylord, Mike Johnson, Joey McCarthy, Mike Olsen and Jack Sellers.
Four races, four winners: None of the first four winners in Toyota All-Star Showdown competition have been able to repeat. The four post-season events featured four different winners – Austin Cameron (2003), Mike Johnson (2004), David Gilliland (2005) and Matt Kobyluck (2006).
Finishing up front: Matt Kobyluck has the most top-five finishes in Showdown competition, with three. He is tied with Brian Hoar and Joey McCarthy for the most top-10 finishes, with three each.
Best average finish: Matt Kobyluck has the best average finish of 4.25, among drivers with three or more starts in Toyota All-Star Showdown competitition. His win last year and runner-up finishes in 2004 and 2005, followed a 12th-place finish in the inaugural event in 2003.
Leading the way: David Gilliland has led the most laps in Toyota All-Star Showdown competition. The Riverside, Calif., competitor – who since graduated to the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series – led a total of 133 laps, 91 circuits in 2004 and 42 in 2005.
Race distance: The race distance for the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown has varied. The inaugural event in 2003 was 125 laps. The race distance for events from 2004 to 2006 were 150 laps. This year’s event is slated for 250 laps.
Last to lock in: Eric Holmes was the last driver to lock in a spot to this year’s event by winning a Grand National West Series race, taking the victory in the season finale. Holmes won the Elite portion of the Showdown in 2004.

Home Field Advantage: Track Champ Michels Ready To Take On All Challengers In Super Late Model 150
The only thing left for Rip Michels to accomplish in 2007 is to win Friday’s NASCAR TOYOTA All-Star Showdown King Taco 150 NASCAR Whelen All-American Super Late Model race at Irwindale Speedway. The 42-year-old resident of San Fernando, Calif., has enjoyed a dominant year at his “home track”, Irwindale Speedway, winning his fourth track division title, and the ACDelco Super Late Model series crown on Sept. 22.
“Winning any championship is awesome,” Michels said. “Winning the 2006 NASCAR Southwest Tour title was sweet, but winning this year’s Super Late Model title is cool and hopefully winning Friday’s Showdown race will cap a special year. But the competition in Friday night’s race will be tough!”
Michels won 11 races, and his 55 career victories on the half-mile variable banked track are more than any other Irwindale Speedway competitor.
At one point in time, Michels was considering not racing at Irwindale Speedway this year.
He had spent the past three years racing on the NASCAR Elite Division, Southwest Series winning last year’s title and his only win which was the race at Irwindale. NASCAR realigned its short-track racing program, eliminating the Southwest Series from its development ranks.
Michels spent the off-season looking for another team and right after Christmas of last year, Michels agreed to a deal with long-time Irwindale Speedway competitor Lee Ladd and team owner Bob Bruncati to race one of Bruncati’s Super Late Model cars at the Speedway.
“I’ve had a great racing career and have accomplished more than I ever dreamed I could,” said Michels. “The accomplishments I have reached are because of great people like the late great Jim Kent, who taught me how to build my first street stock, to Lee Ladd, Rick Smith and, of course, my team owners Bob and Maureen Bruncati.”
“It takes the whole package to win and without the support of these people, including my crew members and a supporting wife, you will not be successful.”

D.W. Will Oversee Festivities As Showdown Grand Marshal
Eighteen years after finally reaching Victory lane in the Daytona 500, three-time NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series champion Darrell Waltrip will serve as the Grand Marshal for the race that has become the ‘Daytona 500’ of the NASCAR Developmental Series: the 2007 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown.
Waltrip – who had championships in 1981, 1982 and 1985, along with 84 wins in NASCAR’s premier series – will serve as the dignitary for what has become the pinnacle of short-track racing. Known for its tight three-wide or sometimes four-wide competition and dramatic finishes.
After his racing career, in which he had more than 800 career starts in NASCAR’s Cup Series between 1972 and 1999, Waltrip became a television commentator. The Owensboro, Ky., native serves as an analyst on FOX’s NASCAR broadcasts.

Gordon may deserve title, but it’s far from guaranteed
Again and again he managed to avoid outright disaster, salvaging high finishes even as everyone around him struggled. Other drivers saw his savvy and resilience, and wondered aloud how they were going to beat him. He had that combination of skill, luck, experience and perspective that was difficult to overcome. He left Lowe’s Motor Speedway with a relatively comfortable double-digit points lead, and everyone in NASCAR’s premier series talking about how the championship was Jeff’s to lose.
