Tryson Wins Crew Chief of the Race Award
Almost every crew chief followed the same pit strategy in the Checkers Auto Parts 500, that is, except for Pat Tryson. Tryson was one of the few daring crew chiefs who opted to take only two tires on the last round of pit stops. His decision brought the No. 6 AAA team a finish just outside the top-five and earned him the WypAll® Wipers Crew Chief of the Race award. After spending the majority of the race outside the top-10, Tryson earned Martin’s track position the easy way – he spent less time on pit road. When the caution waved on lap 253, Tryson called for a two-tire change on his driver’s Ford Fusion, a move the shot Martin into the lead for the restart. Martin took advantage of his newfound real estate and held on to finish in sixth-place. For winning the Crew Chief of the Race award, WYPALL® Wipers presented Tryson $1,000.

Overnight Ratings Up
NBC’s broadcast of Sunday’s Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway earned an overnight Nielsen Media Research rating of 4.1 and an 8 market share, Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Daily reports. The rating is 2.5 percent higher than the 4.0 NBC earned overnight for the 2005 Phoenix race.

Four drivers will challenge Jimmie Johnson for the NASCAR Nextel Cup championship at Homestead after Johnson finished second to Kevin Harvick in Sunday’s Checker Auto Parts 500k at Phoenix International Raceway. Harvick’s Chevrolet dominated, leading 252 of the 312 laps, and he beat Johnson’s Chevy by .250 second. Denny Hamlin was third, followed by Jeff Gordon and Carl Edwards. The standings, with one race to go (Phoenix finish in parenthesis): Johnson; Matt Kenseth (13th), - 63 points; Harvick, - 90; Hamlin, - 90; Dale Earnhardt Jr. (ninth), - 115. Eliminated from title contention: Gordon, - 167; Jeff Burton (10th), - 225; Mark Martin (sixth); -273; Kasey Kahne (seventh), - 319; Kyle Busch (38th), - 359.

NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series
Roush Racing reunited Bob Osborne as Carl Edwards’ crew chief and Wally Brown rejoined Jamie McMurray’s crew. Pat Tryson will move from the No. 6 to be Greg Biffle’s crew chief. Matt Borland missed Phoenix and won’t be at Homestead as Ryan Newman’s crew chief. Engineer Mike Nelson is filling the role. NASCAR announced that Craig Curione, No. 10 Valvoline Evernham crew member, has been suspended indefinitely from NASCAR and fined $10,000 for a rule violation he committed following the Texas race. The action resulted from violation of Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing; involved in an altercation with another competitor) of the 2006 NASCAR rulebook. “After a comprehensive internal review of the post-race incident between Kevin Harvick and a member of the No. 10 team, Valvoline Evernham Racing supports NASCAR’s decision to indefinitely suspend the involved crew member,” said Jim Rocco, Valvoline designated team owner. “We apologize to Kevin and DeLana Harvick, NASCAR, our partners and our fans for this incident. The behavior demonstrated by the involved crew member was in violation of the Valvoline Evernham Racing Employee Code of Conduct and will not be tolerated. We concur with NASCAR’s ruling and will not appeal the suspension or fine.” Jeff Gordon took the pole Friday at Phoenix with a 134.464 mph lap. He led the first four laps until No. 2 qualifier Harvick went past. The first yellow was due to debris and Harvick was still in front on the lap 77 restart. Jimmie Johnson, who started 29th, had a great handling car and passed Harvick around lap 140. There was another debris yellow and Johnson led on the lap 158 green. Harvick repassed a few laps later and then the yellow waved as Michael Waltrip’s car dropped oil. Johnson had a slow pit stop and fell from second to seventh. There was another yellow right after the green when Chad Chaffin and Robby Gordon had contact. The restart was with 82 laps to go, but the next yellow was caused when Waltrip slowed with engine problems. Everyone pitted and Mark Martin came out ahead after changing just two tires. The green waved with 55 laps left but another series of cautions awaited and Martin stayed ahead during this sequence. First, Mike Bliss’ engine went, and then Tony Stewart bumped Jamie McMurray into the wall, an incident that caught-up Dale Jarrett, Newman, Kyle Busch and Jeff Green. The restart with 31 to go left Martin in front, but only for one lap, as Harvick got under him in turn four. Then, Sterling Marlin and Jarrett wrecked. The restart was with 16 left but Green crashed in turn one. The next restart came with eight laps remaining but Casey Mears spun in turn one and officials waved the red flag to clean up debris. Harvick had been having battery problems and needed a truck to push-start him. Harvick stayed ahead of Johnson when the final green came with three laps left, recording his fifth victory of the season. He averaged 96.131 mph with 10 yellows for 58 laps. Scott Riggs started 42d and finished 22d in the Valvoline/Stanley Tools Dodge.

Benson’s Fifth Win Simply Amazing
11-13-2006 | TruckSeries.com Report
From first to worst and back to first again summed up Johnny Benson’s fifth victory of the season Friday night in the Casino Arizona 150 at Phoenix International Raceway. Benson, who’d earlier in the day set a new qualifying record of 132.660 mph, didn’t make a lap before losing the air off his Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Toyota and spinning in Turn 3. Fortunately, there was no contact and Benson was able to pit and restart in the 35th and last position. From there the former NASCAR Busch Series champion methodically worked his way back through the field and by lap 100 had closed to the tailgate of Mark Martin’s leading Scotts Ford. The pair battled fiercely until the 121st lap when Benson stuck the nose of his Toyota under Martin’s left flank and grabbed the lead as the pair exited the backstretch dogleg.
