Auto racing: Two Iowa women picked for NASCAR combine
The population of racer Alison Quick’s hometown of Redding hasn’t changed much in recent years.
“It’s still 80,” said the 20-year-old late model and modified driver. “If not a few less.”
Plenty in the aptly named Quick’s life has changed, though, as she prepares to begin her third NASCAR Drive for Diversity combine today and Tuesday at South Boston, Va.

2007 Drive For Diversity
Twenty-four drivers from different forms of racing all over the country will showcase their skills in front of NASCAR team owners at the fifth annual Drive for Diversity Testing & Evaluation Combine October 15–16 at South Boston Speedway in South Boston, Va. This year’s candidates were selected from more than 200 applicants from across the United States. “The number of minority and female drivers interested in participating in the Drive for Diversity program continues to grow each year in both quantity and quality,” said Malcolm Calhoun, vice president of Access Marketing & Communications, which runs the Drive for Diversity Program. “Our partnership with NASCAR allows us to provide these up-and-coming drivers the opportunity to showcase their talent and dedication to motorsports.”
Since the creation of the Drive for Diversity program in 2004, 17 competitors who are minorities or women have driven in NASCAR’s developmental series, winning 11 races. The 24 drivers participating in the Combine, including the seven members of the 2007 Drive for Diversity class, will participate in on- and off-track evaluation. The on-track session will be conducted in NASCAR Grand National Division cars and will include testing, qualifying laps and intermediate runs. Drive for Diversity affiliated team owners will select eight drivers to compete for their teams in 2008 in either the NASCAR Grand National Division or the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. Four drivers will compete in each series.

LVMS seeking new Sprint Cup race sponsor for 2009 and beyond: The 2009 NASCAR season will bring a new era to Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The speedway currently is marketing a multifaceted event sponsorship opportunity that will begin with the 2009 Sprint Cup Series event. Officials from LVMS and the United Auto Workers have agreed that the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup UAW-Dodge 400 will bring an end to their eight-year agreement, marking a change to one of the longest-running event sponsorships in the sport. Powell said the relationship with the United Auto Workers continues to be beneficial for both parties. The race was known as the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 from 2001-2007. The recent buyout of the Chrysler brand from DaimlerBenz by Cerberus Capital Management necessitated the name change to UAW-Dodge 400 for 2008. The March 2 race will mark the end of NASCAR’s fifth-longest active event sponsorship. Only Coca-Cola at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Food City at Bristol, Save Mart at Infineon Raceway and Chevrolet at Richmond predated the UAW agreement at LVMS. Tickets for the 2008 UAW-Dodge 400 and the Sam’s Town 300 NASCAR Nationwide (formerly Busch) Series event on March 1 are available through the LVMS ticket office by calling 1-800-644-4444 or logging on to www.lvms.com. Neon Garage, Lucky 7 Preferred Parking and Driver Introduction passes also are available (LVMS PR)(10-15-2007)

It was announced today that current crew chief Paul Wolfe has re-signed with Fitz Motorsports for the 2008 NASCAR Nationwide Series Season. Wolfe, who brought the team their first win in the NASCAR Busch East Series last year, has been a leading factor in the turn-around of the team this season, according to owner Armando Fitz. “We have been very satisfied with the success Paul has brought us this season, and we are thrilled to have him back next year. He has really been a big part of what has turned this program around,” Fitz stated. “Going from where we were last year, to an honorable 8th place Owners’point position this year, really shows that we are a competitive team. With Paul on board next year I think we will be ready to really shoot for that Nationwide Series Championship.” The 2007 season has been Wolfe’s first full season as a crew chief in the NASCAR Busch Series. He has worked with six different drivers this year; four of which made top-ten finishes, (three of those finished top-5); two drivers started outside the pole, and one driver won the pole on his first ever Busch series start. These results are proof of Wolfe’s consistency in producing quality race cars. “I am really looking forward to next year, and the chance to improve on everything that we learned this season. With new equipment and extra help, our goal in ’08 is to find that competitive edge that will take us from top-five finishes to wins,”Wolfe stated. “Working with the different drivers this season has been a learning experience, and we have had good finishes, but I think with just one next season we will really be able to improve every week. With a great driver and my hard working crew that has really proven themselves all season, I think we’ve got a good chance to be a winning team in 2008.” Fitz Motorsports, currently in their 8th season of competition, will continue to run the No.22 Dodge next season, proudly displaying Supercuts and Family Dollar as the primary sponsors. Kimmel Clinches Ninth ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship at Toledo; To be honored at National Championship Awards Banquet in December
TOLEDO OH (10-14-07) Frank Kimmel officially clinched the 2007 ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship on Sunday afternoon at Toledo Speedway, marking his ninth title and eighth consecutive on the 55-year-old national stock car tour. Kimmel, a Clarkesville, Indiana native and 19-year veteran of the tour, remains the series’ all-time champion and all-time money winner.
“It’s just real cool and very rewarding,” said Kimmel. “To be able to win this championship despite all of the competitive teams in ARCA this year. Michael [McDowell] and Eddie Sharp Racing put a lot of pressure on us and they made us want to run well. We struggled this year with all kinds of adversity. We didn’t have a sponsor and despite the problems we had the team stuck together and it was good to be able to win a ninth championship.”
En route to the 2007 title, Kimmel earned race victories at Iowa Speedway, the Illinois State Fairgrounds and The Milwaukee Mile, bringing his career total to 71, just eight shy of Iggy Katona’s all-time win record in ARCA competition. He posted 11 top-5 and 17 top-10 finishes in 23 races.
For Kimmel, the opportunity to officially clinch the 2007 title during ARCA’s Championship Weekend festivities at Toledo Speedway was very fitting. He earned his career first victory at Toledo Speedway in 1992 and is the track’s all-time ARCA RE/MAX Series winner at Toledo with nine victories at the .5-mile track.
“The whole thing always seems to come back here to Toledo,” said Kimmel. “My first race in ARCA ever was here at Toledo in a car fielded by Jack Wallace. My first win in ARCA came here at Toledo, and I have nine wins here. And of course, Toledo is special to ARCA as well since this is the series’ hometown track. To be able to come back here to Toledo and celebrate a ninth championship is pretty special.”
In addition to the 2007 championship, Kimmel is the 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 ARCA RE/MAX Series Champion. He has been a top-ten points finisher the past 16 consecutive ARCA RE/MAX Series seasons and in 349 career starts since 1990, Kimmel has 207 top-5 finishes and 258 top-10s, more than any other active driver in both categories.
Kimmel and the Tri State Motorsports Team will formally accept the 2007 Championship at the ARCA RE/MAX Series National Championship Awards Banquet on Saturday, December 8th at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, Kentucky. The event is open to the public and tickets are available by calling the ARCA Home Office at (734) 847-6726.

Beginning in 2008, Race Fans Can Communicate in Real Time via arcaracing.com
TOLEDO OH (10-15-07)—ACME Branding Company and ARCA jointly announced this week in a press conference at Toledo Speedway the birth of the ARCA NATION.
ARCA NATION is a community-based social networking enhancement to arcaracing.com that will allow fans, teams, sponsors and ARCA to communicate in real time.
“From the grassroots teams, NASCAR development teams, and even the emergence of a Formula One driver in the series, ARCA is experiencing unprecedented growth,” said Steven Volpp, CEO of Acme Branding Company. “For the first time within any racing sanctioning body, teams, fans and sponsors can all communicate in real time within their own community without the expense of creating their own stand alone websites.”
In addition to ARCA NATION, live-to-web timing and scoring will be available for all on-track sessions of the ARCA RE/MAX Series in 2008. Major enhancements are also in store for arcaracing.com, which serves as the official website of the ARCA RE/MAX Series, the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series, Flat Rock Speedway and Toledo Speedway.
“With so much of our future already in place, all ARCA needed was an industry-leading approach to telling our unique story and we believe that ARCA NATION is the answer,” said Mark Gundrum, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for ARCA.
ARCA NATION will be launched in beta form in December in time for ARCA RE/MAX Series testing at Daytona International Speedway, and will go live on February 1st, 2008.

Championship Contenders Eying Dan Duncan Aaron’s 250
Myrtle Beach, S.C.-The chips are in the pot, the top-10 drivers are all in and the fans at South Georgia Motorsports Park are in for a no-holds-barred fight for the Hooters Pro Cup Series National Championship in the Dan Duncan Memorial Aaron’s 250 presented by Jerry Kelley GMC Pontiac on Saturday, Oct. 20.
Over 110 teams started the season with visions of hoisting the coveted hardware, but those numbers have been trimmed to less than 15 teams with a legitimate shot at the title.
Coming into the Aaron’s 250, less than 150 points separate the top 15 in points. That may sound like a lot, but under the Pro Cup point system, drivers can gain up to 116 points on a competitor in a single event. Benny Gordon, who sits eighth in points, 98 points behind Gill, could walk out of South Georgia with the point lead. Even so, some believe that the trophy could already be engraved.
