Good morning. We had some e-mail problems on Friday; that’s why that day’s Gazette was late. And I meant to try to get out an edition after the race on Saturday, but there’s just not too much free time, especially on Sundays.

Race away from race
Cart outings are a way to compete far from the spotlight with family and friends.
By KELLIE DIXON, Times Sports Writer

No autographs to sign; no interviews to attend. Just carts to race.

Really, most drivers would tell you that’s their ideal set-up for racing every weekend.

But racing alone doesn’t pay the bills so the drivers are left to their own backyards.

This week many drivers, including Tampa native Aric Almirola, will show up at Kevin Harvick’s house in North Carolina to race on his paved track. Harvick generally hosts the event when the NASCAR Nextel Cup series runs in Martinsville, which it will next weekend. He held the informal race in May, and about 20 drivers, crew members and friends showed up to race. This time the get-together is being called the Fall Brawl.

Jeff Gordon Wins At Lowe’s
Jeff Gordon didn’t know if he’d have enough fuel to finish the race, the car had sputtered on the final two restarts and each time his Chevrolet did come to life, Gordon would run as fast as anyone on the track. After a lengthy red flag, for oil on the track, the race restarted with Gordon in the lead — but his car sputtered and pole sitter Ryan Newman shot past him for the point. It looked like Newman had the field covered and there would be no catching him. But Newman overdrove the corner and crashed, giving the lead back to Gordon. That set up a green-white-checkers finish. It took several extra laps to clean up the mess and still Gordon’s engine was missing as though it was starving for fuel. Gordon rode the low line of the track so the gas would pick up better and on the final restart, managed to hold off Clint Bowyer to win the Bank of America 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on Saturday night. Gordon had failed to finish the last five races at Lowe’s and his goal when the race started was just to finish the 500 miles. Jeff Gordon won his first Cup race at this track in 1994, thirteen years ago. The win on Saturday night was his 81st career victory.

It was the second straight victory for Gordon, he also won the Talladega Superspeedway race last Sunday. It was the sixth victory for Gordon in 2007 and is the win leader for the year. Gordon also stretched his Nextel Cup point standings over Jimmie Johnson to 68 and 78 over third place in the standings, Clint Bowyer. — Kyle Busch finished third and RCR driver Jeff Burton was fourth. Carl Edwards had a good run, driving to a fifth place finish followed by Dave Blaney in a Toyota, Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, David Stremme and Michael Waltrip to round out the top ten. Six drivers in the Chase for the Championship suffered troubles of one sort or another. Kevin Harvick pitted twice early in the race for tire problems and finished 33rd (seven laps down), Matt Kenseth crashed and finished 34th. Kurt Busch had several encounters, once in a pit collision and then the car sounded like it was running down one cylinder, he finished 26th. Denny Hamlin was 20th with transmission troubles, Jimmie Johnson was 14th after spinning and then stopping for fuel with three laps to go. Tony Stewart had a pit collision with two different cars but managed to drive back to the seventh position. The Nextel Cup Series moves to Martinsville Speedway next Sunday, October 21st for the Subway 500. This will be the 32nd race in the 36 race schedule.

Johnson Earns Lap Leader Award
Jimmie Johnson led six times for 95 laps to earn WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race honors in Saturday night’s Bank of America 500. Hamlin claimed the award for the fourth time this season and has led 1,070 laps in 19 races this season. Johnson also led the most laps of any driver at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, earning a five-point bonus. Johnson spun off Turn 2 on lap 232, bringing out the 12th caution of the race but still recovered to post a 14th-place finish on the lead lap. Johnson is second in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series championship standings, 68 points behind leader Jeff Gordon. Johnson leads third-place Clint Bowyer by 10 and fourth-place Tony Stewart by 130. Jeff Gordon leads Tony Stewart by two races (7-5) in the overall WIX Filters Lap Leader standings.

Kurt Busch on merger of Miller and Coors: DOES THE MERGER BETWEEN MILLER AND COORS AFFECT YOUR SPONSORSHIP? I dont know anything other than they did combine, or theyre in negations to do such. The numbers that Ive heard are 58 percent for MillerSAB and 42 percent for MolsonCoors. Thats all that I know. I havent talked with any Miller people about it. They are all coming in tonight to check out qualifying, and then tomorrow weve got some in the morning for meetings. Right now Im sure it doesnt change a thing. Roger Penske has been with Miller for over 25 years and his race teams. Thats what really anchors us solidly with that program.(Dodge Motorsports PR)(10-15-2007)

Martin Truex Jr. Announces Foundation: #1-Martin Truex Jr. announced he has started a foundation that will benefit children in need. Truex Jr. donated a check in the amount of $100,000 to the foundation in making the announcement. “I have been fortunate enough to be surrounded by a loving family and supportive friends,” said Truex. “They have helped me get to where I am today. When I joined Dale Earnhardt Inc. I made a promise to myself to give back to those less fortunate than me. The Martin Truex Jr. Foundation is the realization of that promise. The foundation is dedicated to providing funds to non-profit, charitable organizations that will properly impact the lives of children. It will benefit children in my hometown in New Jersey, as well as the town of Mooresville, North Carolina, and the surrounding area. There are so many kids who could accomplish things in their lives if only given the right tools. My goal is to help these kids any way I can. Our first project, “Little Bears for Little Kids”, is a stuffed animal drive for children who have been served by the Dove House in Statesville, North Carolina. We have collected several thousand stuffed animals for the children in need. I need to thank everyone with all of these corporations who have helped to make this a success.” The Dale Earnhardt Foundation also donated $5,000 to the fund. The Earnhardt Foundation will donate $3,000 for each victory Truex Jr. earns for the rest of 2007 and in 2008. Bass Pro Shops will also donate 1,000 stuffed bears to the Little Bears for Little Kids program. Eight hundred and twenty-seven of the bears were donated today to the Dove House in Statesville, which benefits victims of child abuse.(Lowes Motor Speedway PR)(10-15-2007)

Hass Racing Quiet about 2008 Drivers: When it comes to who’ll be in what Haas CNC Racing cars in 2008, nobody seems to know much of anything. Joe Custer, the team’s general manager, plays his cards close to the vest. Very, very close. Johnny Sauter, driver of the organization’s #70 entry, says that he doesn’t have a clue what he’ll be doing next year, but adds that he’s been given permission to look elsewhere. Jeff Green, who steers its #66 Chevy, refuses altogether to comment on the situation. With Scott Riggs already signed for next year and two Haas cars available, there’s considerable speculation as to which one he’ll drive and whether it’ll be Green or Sauter who’s left out of the mix. Then again, names other than Riggs’ [including Mayfield and Stremme] have been mentioned as joining the operation. If that happens, Green and Sauter would most likely both be gone. According to Custer, neither driver has a decided advantage at this stage of the game.(NASCAR.com)(10-14-2007)
More Stremme Buzz in the Garage: Hearing from many sources that #40 David Stremme is now the leading candidate for at least four teams. Options include third and fourth car situations (GEM?, Penske?, MWR?, Ganassi?) and Haas Racing where Johnny Sauter is expected to be replaced.(10-14-2007)

Former 49ers Owner Almost Bought Hendrick in 2004: Former San Francisco 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo told Sports Business Journal recently that he almost became a NASCAR owner in 2004. “We would have bought a NASCAR team if Reggie White hadn’t died,” DeBartolo said of the former NFL player. “The week he passed away we were going to sign the agreement with Hendrick Motorsports. After that, I just couldn’t do it. I loved Reggie too much.”(Roanoke Times)(10-14-2007)
AND and from a July article – Dale Earnhardt Inc. president Max Siegel told ESPN.com on Wednesday [in July] that three years ago he was prepared to partner with NFL Hall of Famers Reggie White and Ronnie Lott, as well as former San Francisco 49ers owner Eddie DeBartalo Jr., in purchasing MB2 Motorsports, which at the time fielded the #01 and #10 Chevrolets. The papers were drawn. All that was left was the official closing, which was slated for Jan. 15, 2005. But when White died suddenly on Dec. 26, 2004, and the deal died with him. Siegel said he and White originally had planned to partner with Rick Hendrick on a NASCAR Busch Series operation. Then the Hendrick Motorsports plane crash in October 2004 halted that initiative. A couple of months had passed, and Siegel said Hendrick contacted him about the program. Hendrick explained that in order for him to be involved, White and Siegel had to purchase a team with an existing Hendrick partnership. Enter MB2, whose engines were supplied by Hendrick. At the time, Valvoline was part-owner of MB2, as well. All the pieces were in place, then White passed away.(ESPN.com)(10-14-2007)

Jarrett won’t get behind the wheel once he retires: Terry Labonte has done it on occasion. Bill Elliott is doing it now. But don’t expect Dale Jarrett to join the on-again, off-again trend of former Nextel Cup champions running one-off races sporadically. “As far as coming back, and people wanting you to get in a race here and there, I just don’t see that happening, whatsoever,” Jarrett said Friday, just after announcing his pending retirement. Jarrett considers it unfair to the teams attempting to run the entire schedule. “I know what that is like [from experiencing it] this year,” Jarrett said. “I didn’t want to put someone else in that position. The only thing that would change that would be if UPS came to me and said, ‘We need you to run this race.’” So what’s next? Jarrett will mentor Michael Waltrip Racing development drivers Josh Wise and Michael McDowell, and said he plans to begin discussions with ESPN about his television future very soon.(ESPN.com)(10-14-2007)

WICKS SETS WORLD SPEED RECORD IN DODGE

Wicks Achieves 244.9 Miles Per Hour in Dodge Charger Stock Car

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (October 12, 2007) – Russ Wicks, who holds World Speed Records of more than 200 miles per hour on both land and water, has set a stock car world record of 244.9 miles per hour, which has been confirmed by Guinness World Records. Wick successfully achieved the record on Tuesday, October 9 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Northwestern Utah while driving a 2007 Dodge Charger built to NASCAR specifications. The new mark shatters Wicks’ previous stock car world speed record of 222 miles per hour.

Wicks’ vehicle was developed with the backing of the Dodge Motorsports Engineering Group and Arrington Engines. Autodesk software was leveraged to make integral performance modifications.

Wicks is the only living person to hold world speed records over 200 miles per hour on land and water.

NASCAR Takes Busch COT to Wind Tunnel: NASCAR has had its planned new Busch version of the car of tomorrow in the wind tunnel this week, with Detroit car makers sending engineers over to discuss various options. NASCAR officials have been considering allowing more leeway on the body styling of the new model, which is tentatively set to debut in 2009.(Winston Salem Journal)(10-13-2007)

2008 Driver Lineup Taking Shape: The driver lineup for several Nationwide Series teams for 2008 is shaping up. Current series points leader Carl Edwards will run the full season against next year, a Roush Fenway Racing spokesman said, and Michael Waltrip Racing officials said David Reutimann would also run the full Nationwide schedule. Marcos Ambrose and Kelly Bires will return to race full time for Wood Brothers/JTG Racing next year, a team spokesman confirmed. Brewco Motorsports hopes to have one driver for each car next year, new team owner Gary Baker said Friday. One driver in the mix, likely for the # 37, is Baker’s son, Brad, who was entered at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The other driver is anticipated to be Brad Coleman, sources said. Coleman was a part of Brewco until he signed with Joe Gibbs Racing for this season. Fitz Motorsports owner Armando Fitz said there is a 95 percent chance that Mike Bliss would drive the team’s #22 Dodge in all 35 Nationwide races next year. Fitz said the team has sold sponsorship for every race, and Bliss wants to drive for the team. An announcement could come before the race in Memphis in two weeks. Gillett Evernham Motorsports could expand to two full-time teams next year, a source close to the team said. The rides would be split among the team’s Cup drivers, with development drivers likely filling in, too. (SceneDaily.com), see the 2008 Nationwide Team Chart for a look at drivers and teams currently expected to compete next year.(10-12-2007) http://www.jayski.com/busch/2008busch-chart.htm

Joe Gibbs Racing has elected to not to field Aric Almirola in the NASCAR Busch Series race at Memphis, Tenn., which team president J.D. Gibbs had promised Almirola after he was pulled from the Milwaukee race earlier this season in favor of Denny Hamlin. Almirola, who has already moved to Dale Earnhardt Inc. and will share a Nextel Cup Series ride with veteran Mark Martin next season, was informed this week of the team’s decision and called the move “very disappointing.” Almirola will be replaced in the No. 20 Chevrolet by JGR teammate J.J. Yeley, who is also leaving the organization at season’s end. “It was something I was really looking forward to and I was looking forward to finishing out the year strong with Joe Gibbs Racing. I still plan to. will still drive the Busch race at Homestead,” Almirola said. Gibbs had offered the Memphis race – originally planned for Hamlin since his Cup sponsor is headquartered in the city – as a make-up for the incident at Milwaukee. “Aric and I have talked about it and he knows that if he was still going to be a part of JGR next year, we’d be running him in every race we could right now,” team president J.D. Gibbs said. “Milwaukee was frustrating for everybody. But when we started this development driver program, our goal was to get Aric into Cup and he will have that opportunity to do that with an experienced veteran like Mark Martin next year. FINAL ARCA RE/MAX SERIES POINTS AFTER TOLEDO SPEEDWAY (10-14-07)

1) Frank Kimmel 5705; 2) Michael McDowell 5455; 3) Dexter Bean 4890; 4) Justin Allgaier 4850; 5) Justin Marks 4795; 6) Phillip McGilton 4745; 7) Patrick Sheltra 4615; 8) Justin South 4380; 9) Bryan Silas 4135; 10) Josh Krug 4080.

McDowell Dominates Toledo; Kimmel Clinches 9th Series Title

TOLEDO OH (10-14-07) Michael McDowell made his grand exit from the ARCA RE/MAX Series stage in grand style. The Phoenix, Arizona rookie, on his way to the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series in 2008, won the SIM Factory Pole, led the most laps and passed James Buescher with two laps to go to win the thrilling Hantz Group 200 by Belle Tire Sunday afternoon at Toledo Speedway.

McDowell, in Eddie Sharp’s Z Line-Make A Wish-Beck Dodge, lost the lead in lapped traffic on the 172nd circuit of the 200 lap race, and took it back just in time to earn his fourth career RE/MAX Series victory.

“I made a mistake there, got trapped down on the bottom and let James get away from me and I didn’t want to end the race that way,” said McDowell. “When I cut down on the bottom (pass for the lead) I clipped him a little bit. I didn’t mean to do that but that’s how short track racing goes. I’m glad to be able to end my season with a win. It’s just a testament to how great Eddie Sharp Racing is. Running the whole ARCA season has prepared me for my next endeavor in racing.”

McDowell also sewed up Rookie of the Year honors and second place in national championship points.

Buescher settled for second two lengths away in the Mercedes Homes-Red Line Oil Dodge.

“We were just kind of buying time making laps there at the beginning of the race, riding around the top-five,” said Buescher. “We were leading the lap before the last lap so wish we could have won it. We started off our ARCA season with a win and I wish we could have ended it with a win but I’m happy with second place.”

Frank Kimmel, who finished fifth, secured his ninth ARCA RE/MAX Series championship and eighth consecutive just by virtue of rolling off the grid.

“It’s just real cool and very rewarding,” said Kimmel. “To be able to win this championship despite all of the competitive teams in ARCA this year. Michael [McDowell] and Eddie Sharp Racing put a lot of pressure on us and they made us want to run well. We struggled this year with all kinds of adversity. We didn’t have a sponsor and despite the problems we had the team stuck together and it was good to be able to win a ninth championship.”

In all, McDowell dominated the race leading 166 laps with Buescher next on the lap-leader board with 27 laps led. Justin Allgaier was the only other driver to lead with seven laps led.

Second-generation ARCA racer Michael Simko charged from the 19th starting position to finish third.

“This was absolutely the most fun I’ve had all year,” said Simko. “To run with a different series all year and then come to Salem and finish sixth and to finish third at Toledo after starting 19th is just really rewarding. We knew we had a car better than where we qualified and we proved that here today.”

Marc Davis, a development driver for Joe Gibbs Racing, finished fourth in a Venturini Motorsports Chevrolet in his career-first series start.

Todd Bowsher, who started 23rd, finished sixth in the AmericanConsumerCables.com Ford, earning the Hoosier Tire Hard Charger honors for advancing the most positions.

Justin Marks finished seventh in the Construct Corps Dodge with Patrick Sheltra trailing in eighth in the US Construction-CP Concrete Products Chevrolet. Rookie Ray Mooi finished ninth in the Dodge Motorsports Dodge, the last car on the lead lap. Phillip McGilton finished 10th in the SI Performance Ford, one lap down.

There were 13 cautions for 72 laps for a variety of typical short-track scuffles. There were no injuries.

The next event for the ARCA RE/MAX Series is the national championship awards banquet at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, Kentucky on Saturday, December 8th.
