NASCAR Pioneer G.C. Spencer Dies At Age 82: G.C. Spencer, one of NASCAR’s pioneer drivers, died Thursday at the age of 82. He made his NASCAR debut in 1958 and competed in 415 races before retiring in 1977. “G. C. was one of those guys everybody liked,” said NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter. “I never heard anyone say anything negative about him. He helped build the sport everyone enjoys today.” Spencer, who drove the No. 49 for much of his 20-year career, had 55 top-five finishes and 138 top 10s. Although he never won a race, he finished second seven times. His best season was 1965 when he finished fourth in the standings behind Ned Jarrett, Dick Hutcherson and Darel Dieringer. He finished the year with 14 top fives and earned his only career pole, at Hickory Motor Speedway. – NASCAR, Press Release

Carl Edwards Wins At Dover
Carl Edwards did it again, he won on a concrete track, the high-banked, high-speed Monster Mile of Dover International Speedway. It was the third victory of the 2007 season for Edwards and the seventh of a 113 race career. Edwards, now known as “Concrete Carl” has won six time on tracks with concrete surfaces, two in the Nextel Cup Series and four in the Busch Series. Edwards held of a hard charging teammate in the closing laps, Greg Biffle, who was hungry for a victory, but he couldn’t catch Edwards. Biffle held on for second place. Edwards was turning his quickest laps near the end of the race. Edwards won the Dodge Dealers 400 by leading three times for a total of 95 laps — but the lap leader was Matt Kenseth with a total of 192 laps but it was all for naught, Kenseth blew an engine with 25 laps to go.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. brought his DEI Chevrolet home in the third spot over his DEI teammate Mark Martin. Kyle Busch finished fifth followed by Casey Mears, Jeff Burton, Jamie McMurray, Tony Stewart and Juan Pablo Montoya to round out the top ten. “We just have to keep running like we’re running,” said Edwards. “It looked like a lot of the guys (in the Chase) had some bad luck today.” — Edwards also had problems but overcame a throttle linkage sticking. — “This is not a good place to have the throttle stick, when it would stick I would have to pull it back up off the floor. I’m glad I have Bob Osborne as the crew chief. He gets the smart guy of the race award.

There were only six car running on the lead lap. The race featured 13 cautions for a total of 66 laps. There were 14 lead changes among nine different drivers. The Nextel Cup Series moves to Kansas Speedway next Sunday, September 30, 2007 for the LifeLock 400. The race is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Eastern time.

No. 99 Car Too Low In Post-Race Inspection
(Carl) Edwards will keep the win even though his car failed postrace inspection for being more than a half-inch low, the tolerance NASCAR allows on height. He likely will be fined a minimum of 25 driver’s points and $25,000, the standard this season for such a violation. That means instead of climbing to third place within three points of leader Jeff Gordon, he will be in sixth place, 28 back. The look of disappointment on his face was evident as he talked with NASCAR officials about the infraction that will be looked into further when the car is evaluated again at the R&D center in Concord, N.C.

Baby Girl For Ambrose
Marcos Ambrose’s decision to pass up an opportunity to make his NASCAR Nextel Cup debut at Dover today was justified when his wife Sonja gave birth to their second child at 3pm in Charlotte, North Carolina today (6am Australian Eastern Standard Time). Ambrose finished 20th in the NASCAR Busch Series race on Saturday in his #59 Kingsford Charcoal Ford Fusion and then flew directly back to Charlotte to be with his wife. Ambrose had been offered the chance to make his Nextel Cup debut in a second Robby Gordon Motorsport entry, but kindly declined the opportunity because he knew it would be “cutting it fine” with the impending birth.

John Force Seriously Injured
Drag racing’s biggest star, 14-time champion John Force, was alert and conscious after suffering two broken legs and a broken arm in a nasty top-end collision Sunday with fellow straight-line legend Kenny Bernstein in the second round of eliminations at the O’Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals at Texas Motorplex outisde of Dallas. Force has been airlifted to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas for further treatment. Their Funny Cars got together just as they crossed the finish line with Bernstein drifting over into Force’s lane after clipping the final timing cone. The numbers, although unofficial, showed Force crossing with a 4.863 at 315.34 mph to Bernstein’s 4.904 at 312.06 mph.

Bernstein quickly made his way out of his Monster Energy Drink Dodge Charger R/T and was shown walking around and talking to medical and safety personnel on the large television screens at the racetrack, which brought a huge cheer from the crowd. But the mood quickly turned quiet as everyone waited for word on Force’s condition. Minutes later, track announcers reported that Force was talking to EMTs but would be transported by LifeFlight Helicopter for further evaluation. Team spokesman Dave Densmore reported Force’s injuries to the media. NHRA.com will provide more information on this breaking story as it becomes available..

Team spokesman Dave Densmore reported Force’s injuries to the media. “He was asking to talk to Laurie, his wife, and Ashley and Robert Hight, so that was a good sign,” Densmore said. “He is in a lot of pain, obviously. They can’t take passengers on the helicopter so the family is off to the hospital in a car.”

“John has very, very serious injuries to his hands, his legs, and his feet that will require extensive work-up and treatment,” said NHRA doctor Dwight Shewchuk, who was first on the scene with the Safety Safari. “Nothing appears life-threatening at this time but he certainly has significant injuries so he’s been taking to Baylor Hospital where he’ll be further evaluated. Although he was alert and conscious throughout the whole thing he was demonstrating some signs of a concussion as he was asking the same question over and over. But his vital signs were stable and he’s on his way.”

Latest on Dale Jr. testing for Hendrick: Dale Earnhardt Jr. wants to test a car for Hendrick Motorsports at the upcoming Atlanta car of tomorrow test, but said he would only do so if Dale Earnhardt Inc. allowed it. DEI’s answer? Go ahead. “We’re talking about it and we don’t necessarily have a problem with it,” DEI vice president John Story said. “We recognize that Dale Jr. and Tony [Eury] Jr. both need to get going with their new program and we’re not going to stand in their way.” DEI had already planned to put Regan Smith in the #8 car during the two-day Atlanta test, which will take place in the two days following the Nextel Cup race at the track. Tony Gibson will be the crew chief at the test for DEI, as Eury will already have left for Hendrick. “It would be positive for everybody,” Story said. “It would give Regan a chance to work with our team and give Tony Jr. and Dale Jr. an opportunity to go work with their new guys. In the spirit of cooperation, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.”(SceneDaily.com)(9-24-2007)

100th Cup win for Roush: #99-Carl Edwards hit another historical marker Sunday winning his seventh career Nextel Cup race at Dover International Speedway and claiming win number 100 for Jack Roush and Roush Fenway Racing in NASCARs elite series [4th all-time]. Roushs first Nextel Cup win came in 1989 with Mark Martin in the #6 Strohs Light Ford. Martin claimed Roush Fenway Racings first win at Rockingham Speedway and now, 18 years later, Edwards has brought home win number 100 in the #99 Office Depot Ford. Roush has won with seven different drivers in NASCARs top series, all in Fords. Three of the seven have moved on but not before leaving their mark in Roush Fenways history books. Martin has the most wins of the seven drivers with 35 while Jeff Burton took home 17 wins during his seven years at the company. Kurt Busch also claimed his share of wins beginning in 2002 at the first Bristol race. Busch went on to win a total of 14 Cup races under the Roush umbrella as well as Roush Fenways second Cup championship in 2004 (the very first Nextel Cup championship). Four of Roush Fenways current Nextel Cup drivers have all contributed to the win column including 15 from Matt Kenseth. Busch and Truck Series champion Greg Biffle has 11 total Cup victories to date. Jamie McMurray has one, this past July at Daytona. This brings Roush Fenway Racings win column to 364 total wins across Roushs NASCAR, Trans-Am and drag racing endeavors.(Roush Fenway Racing PR)(9-24-2007)

More than one driver will race the #21 Ford. Jon Wood appears set to compete in races with Air Force as sponsor.(Roanoke Times)(9-22-2007)
UPDATE: ABC’s Dr. Jerry Punch said during the broadcast of the race at Dover that Bill Elliott, Jon Wood and Marcos Ambrose would be the drivers who would share the #21 ride in 2008.(ABC’s Race Coverage of the Dover Cup race)(9-23-2007)

Petty vs. Hamlin…the quotes: on lap 204 of the Dodge Dealers at Dover International Speedway, #11-Hamlin got into #45-Petty, sending Petty spinning on the frontstretch and into the inside wall..so in the garage minutes after both cars headed to the garage, Petty came over to Hamlin, who was in the #11 while the crew is working on the car, Petty took the window net down and yelled and pointed at Hamlin, gave Hamlin the one finger salute [which was blurred by ABC], NASCAR Officials tired to block Petty, then Hamlin had enough when Petty touched his helmet, which Hamlin removed and got out the car, where he was restrained by his crew and NASCAR officials, then ABC cut back to the race. Comments made by each sent out by respective manufacture reps:
KYLE PETTY (#45 Wells Fargo Dodge Avenger) ON THE ACCIDENT We were a little bit loose. I guess its my fault. I watched the Busch race yesterday and I knew Denny (Hamlin) was sick, I just didnt know he was hallucinating and needed three lanes to get up off the corner because he ran all over us. I guess he is in a race by himself.
ON HIS WORDS WITH HAMLIN I just told him he is in the Chase and Im not. Thats how simple it is. Its a shame that a guy with that much talent has to drive like that. Weve seen it a lot. Weve seen it all year long. Even his teammate Tony Stewart talked about it. I think it pretty much speaks for itself.(Dodge Motorsports PR)
AND DENNY HAMLIN (#11 Fedex Ground Inpala SS – Finished 38th) DID YOU GIVE SO MUCH IN THE BUSCH RACE YESTERDAY THAT YOU WEREN’T FOCUSED TODAY? “That definitely wasn’t an issue. The biggest thing is that I know Kyle (Petty) gets run over a lot and a lot of the reason is that he’s so far off the pace. I firmly believe in my heart that he was trying to get out of the way. But I was right there on his bumper on the inside of him and I think he was trying to pull low. When he did, he checked up to pull low. You can’t do that when someone’s right on you and I think that’s the reason that stuff happens. You’ve got a car two seconds off the pace or whatever it may be. We’re in a clutter of leaders and he’s racing his own little battle and some days it’s your day and some days it’s not. Get out of the way.”
WHAT DID YOU SAY TO KYLE PETTY AND WHAT DID HE SAY TO YOU AT YOUR CAR WINDOW? “He just said it wasn’t racing. And absolutely it wasn’t racing. I wasn’t racing him. There was no reason. Let’s look back at my career. I’ve never wrecked anyone my entire career has anybody spun off my front bumper. It’s not like I’m a guy who runs into everybody. You’ve just got to use your brain. You’ve got to calm down. This is not over for us. A lot of guys had trouble today and we’re going to bounce back from this. This is just one step of this 10-week chase.”
IN HINDSIGHT, DO YOU THINK YOU WERE TOO AGGRESSIVE WITH HIM (PETTY) AT THAT POINT? “There was no reason for me to be aggressive at all. I had the 07 a car length or two behind, but I can give up a spot. I have no problem in that. I’d seen the way he had been running the laps before and he had been going up to the wall. I was assuming he was going to do the same thing but instead he came off the corner and he slowed up right off my front bumper. It’s a mistake whether it’s on my part or his part. That’s what happens. You can’t have two cars that distinguished in speed and expect them to race near each other.”
WERE YOU SURPRISED AT PETTY’S REACTION? “Yeah, I think a lot of it was his frustration over this whole top 35 thing, but we’re racing for bigger and better things. Hopefully, one day, if they get it turned around, I can exchange the favor. But right now, we’re the guys racing for the championship, so you know, heed a little bit.”
WHAT SET YOU OFF TO HAVE YOU JUMP OUT OF YOUR CAR LIKE THAT WHEN YOU WERE WAITING FOR THE CREW TO FIX THE CAR? “Don’t smack me on the helmet. You smack me on the helmet and I’m going to punch you in the face, bottom line. So I’d like for him (Kyle Petty) to call me sometime this week, before next week.”
IS THERE AN UNWRITTEN RULE ABOUT TAKING YOUR WINDOW NET DOWN OR COMING TO YOUR CAR? “You don’t come to my car; you don’t come to my pit. You meet me somewhere else and we’ll settle it. I have the utmost respect for Kyle, but don’t lay your hands on my head.”
WHY DID HE DO THAT? DID YOU SAY SOMETHING BACK TO HIM? “I did not say one word to him. I asked him to come over and talk to me. He chose to slap my helmet. I have a short fuse. Don’t do that. I didn’t say one word to him (Petty) in the garage. All I just said wad ‘Come here and let me talk to you about it’. He chose to slap my helmet, you know, in hindsight, I should have grabbed his throat.”(GM Racing PR)(9-23-2007)

The King talks about possible deal with Gillett: Petty Enterprises is not merging with Gillett Evernham Motorsports. But the Petty family and the Gillett family are exploring the possibility of a partnership. Richard Petty said Friday that his family’s company needs a partner to remain competitive and he is further along in talks with George Gillett than any other potential partner in the past. “We’re probably halfway there,” said Petty, who owns Petty Enterprises. “We’re doing a lot of talking, I’ll put it that way. We have not signed any papers.” When asked if a deal could be done by the start of next season, Petty said “that’s a good question” and “we’re way on down the road, but we don’t know how far down the road we are. Petty said he envisions that if he and Gillett partner at Petty Enterprises, the team would then purchase chassis, and bodies from GEM as well as to continue to buy engines from the team. The two teams, though, would remain as separate companies. There are plenty of sticking points, including how many teams would be in the Petty fold. Gillett could not have an ownership stake in three cars at GEM (#9 with Kasey Kahne, #19 with Elliott Sadler, #10 with Scott Riggs) and then two cars in Petty (#43 with Bobby Labonte, #45 with Kyle Petty) – he would be over the four-team limit. “We at Petty Enterprises are not looking to do away with any of our cars,” Petty said. “So he’s caught in some situations and we’re caught in some situations. … You never look at going backwards. Even with getting all the engineering and everything from other people, you need something to bounce your people off of, so that’s the reason that I would think you would have to have … two cars.” When asked if he was forced to choose between his car numbers, Petty said the 43 would always be with his team but “we haven’t gotten that far along” in the discussions. For Petty, the deal is difficult and he called emotional issues about selling his team “half the battle right now.” “The deal with us is that we’re the Petty name,” said Petty, whose team started when NASCAR started in 1949. “We do Petty Enterprises. We’ve got the Richard Petty Driving Experience. We’ve got Victory Junction Gang Camp. That’s all encompassed, that’s all basically one deal. For now, GEM and Petty will still share information as they have for much of this season.(SceneDaily.com)(9-23-2007)

Another Major NASCAR Mistake
Kelly Bires showed up to the Busch Series drivers meeting at Dover International Speedway on Saturday and sat in the second row, alongside his crew chief, Scott Zipadelli. But just before the RoadLoans.com 200 began, NASCAR told Bires and his No. 47 team that it would have to drop to the rear of the field for missing the drivers meeting. Given that Bires had qualified 21st, he and Zipadelli were surprised and unhappy with the turn of events. “They said we were not there for roll call,” Zipadelli said. “I was sitting right in front of [Busch Series director] Joe Balash. … I was at the drivers meeting before Joe Balash was at the drivers meeting.”

Sunoco 150 Race Results (thanks, Ed)
Source: NASCAR Public Relations

DOVER, Del. (Sept. 21) – Joey Logano (No. 20 Joe Gibbs Driven Chevrolet) finished second but became the NASCAR Busch East Series’ first rookie champion in the Sunoco 150 at Dover International Speedway Friday afternoon.

Sean Caisse (No. 44 Casella Waste Systems Chevrolet) took the race lead from Logano with just eight laps to go, and then withstood a final charge by Logano to win by a car length.

Pole winner Jeffrey Earnhardt (No. 1 Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Boats Chevrolet) gained new northern fans and turned heads with a contending run to finish third. It was the 18-year-old Earnhardt’s best finish of the season and his fourth top-five finish over the last six races of the season.

Jesus Hernandez (No. 4 Allstate Chevrolet) placed fourth, followed by Tim McCreadie (No. 31 Camping World/RVbank.com Chevrolet.)

By virtue of NASCAR’s lower age limit of 16 starting this year for its touring series, Logano is also the youngest champion of the series as well. Logano turned 17 on May 24. His base second-place prize money of $9,361 pushed his season race winnings to $100,786.

Logano, hired as a development driver by Joe Gibbs Racing for the 2007 season, revealed uncommon talent by leading the series point standings all but one week during the early season, and drove on to five wins and 10 top-five finishes in 13 races. That set a new record for races won by a rookie. The previous record was two-win seasons by three different rookie drivers.

Logano praised his teammates in sharing the title.

“My crew chief Mike Sibley is one of the greatest out there. Everyone on the team has worked so hard, and it paid off. Every time we went to the race track we had a chance to win. But there are ten teams who could win every single week. The NASCAR Busch East Series has great competition.”

Chase Austin (No. 99 HomeLife Dodge) posted his rookie season’s best finish of sixth followed by Marc Davis (No 92 WHUR 96.3 Chevrolet), Steve Park (No. 54 Waste Management/Recycle America Chevrolet), Peyton Sellers (No. 83 Strutmasters.com Chevrolet) and Max Dumarey (No. 16 Bodycoach.net) Chevrolet.

Kinser seeking opportunity for 2008: Dale Earnhardt Inc. development driver Kraig Kinser says he is looking for a job for the 2008 season. Kinser, who drove in 31 truck races for MB2 Motorsports and Ginn Racing in conjunction mostly with Morgan-Dollar Motorsports over the last two years, said Saturday that he didn’t anticipate DEI finding sponsorship for him to run any more this year. Aric Almirola and Regan Smith have run the Morgan-Dollar entry in recent Craftsman Truck Series races.(SceneDaily.com)(9-23-2007)

First female in the flagstand: For the first time in series history, and the first time in known history for NASCAR’s top three national touring divisions, there is a female in the flagstand serving as the chief starter. Kerry Earnhardt To Drive No. 37 GLOCK Chevrolet At Talladega Superspeedway in ARCA RE/MAX Series

MOORESVILLE, North Carolina (September 21, 2007) – - Officials from GLOCK, Inc. and Spraker Racing Enterprises (SRE) announced today that four-time ARCA RE/MAX Series (ARS) winner Kerry Earnhardt will drive the No. 37 GLOCK Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS for the ARCA RE/MAX 250 at Talladega Superspeedway on Friday, October 5.

Earnhardt is substituting for GLOCK’s primary driver Michelle Theriault who will utilize the final speedway event of the ARCA season to learn and communicate from the sidelines with Earnhardt.

Earnhardt, the eldest son of the late Dale Earnhardt, Sr. will attempt to make his 12th career ARCA start and return to the series after a six year absence. Under the direction of car owner Jeff Spraker, the team will unload the same machine that NASCAR veteran Mark Martin finished second with in the 2007 Daytona 500. Dale Earnhardt, Inc. (DEI) will also supply the horsepower for the 22nd event of the 2007 ARCA RE/MAX Series calendar.

“Our initial plan was to run Michelle (Theriault) in the ARCA RE/MAX Series race at Talladega, but after careful review and consideration we all felt it was in the best interest of the team and sponsor to bring a veteran to the event. Michelle has done an absolutely phenomenal job for Spraker Racing Enterprises and GLOCK this year,” said car owner Jeff Spraker. “As an organization we did not believe it was fair to throw her into a “restrictor plate” event without more speedway experience. Michelle will be with us at Talladega to support Kerry and endorse GLOCK.”

“We are grateful for Kerry Earnhardt stepping in to aid all of us. With his knowledge and experience of Talladega Superspeedway, we feel he will be an incredible mentor to Michelle and will help her prepare for more speedway races in the future. We’re also excited about bringing a great piece and a stout motor to the final speedway race of the season and hope we can deliver with a top-10 finish,” sounded Spraker.

The anticipated ARCA RE/MAX Series thriller won’t be the first time that Spraker and Earnhardt have united at the Alabama speed plant. Back in 2005, Spraker and Earnhardt competed in the NASCAR Busch Series (NBS) Aaron’s 312 event which produced outstanding results. After running in the lead pack all day, the team was in contention to grasp the victory but had to settle for fifth.

Earnhardt is equally excited about the opportunity to return to the ARCA RE/MAX Series while also reuniting with Spraker Racing Enterprises. “I just want to thank GLOCK, Jeff Spraker and Michelle Theriault for the opportunity to drive for the team at Talladega,” said Earnhardt. “I’m glad to step in and assist the team as they continue to develop Michelle into one of the finest female drivers in stock cars.”

He continued, “We’ve been able to bring all the components together to have a great race. I also want to work with Michelle and teach her things that will only help her future in racing. I also have a job to go out there and try to put GLOCK in victory lane and we are aiming to do that. I’m very excited about returning to the ARCA RE/MAX Series. It’s an awesome series to compete in and it’s been a long while since I’ve raced over there. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t looking forward to it.”

Earlier this year, Spraker and Earnhardt gelled by competing in the NASCAR Busch Series Winn-Dixie 250 presented by PepsiCo event at Daytona International Speedway on July 7. With another chance at the thundering 2.666-mile Alabama facility, both driver and owner are excited about their chances for the ARCA RE/MAX 250 on October 5.

The ARCA RE/MAX 250 (94 laps/250 miles) is the 22nd of 23 races on the 2007 ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule. The 45th ARCA race held at Talladega Superspeedway is a two-day show. Practice begins Thursday, October 4 with a two and a half hour practice session planned from 9:00-11:30am. ARCA SIM Factory pole qualifying is set for later in the day at 3:30pm Local Time. A “Happy Hour” final practice has been etched into the schedule for Friday, October 5 for forty-five minutes from 10:05am-10:50am Local Time. The event will take the green flag on October 5 shortly after 4:00pm Local Time. The race will be televised live on SPEED with additional race coverage online at arcaracing.com.

STECKLY WINS DODGE CHARGER 250 WHILE RANGER SEALS CHAMPIONSHIP
FRASERVILLE, Ontario (Sept. 23, 2007) – A pair of firsts marked the Dodge Charger 250 presented by Allied Steel Buildings at Kawartha Speedway.
Scott Steckly (No. 22 Toronto Marlies/Erb Group Dodge) exorcised a few demons to win his first NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio race on Sunday evening, the last event of the 2007 season.
Andrew Ranger (No. 27 Wal-Mart/Tide Ford) hauled down the big prize and won the first-ever Canadian Tire Series championship. By winning the championship, Ranger earns a guaranteed starting position in the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway on October 19-20. Negotiations are ongoing for Ranger to participate in the showcase event that is telecast live by SPEED.
Steckly, of Milverton, Ontario, took the lead for good on lap 234, but had to hold off several charges from Peter Gibbons (No. 1 Canadian Tire/Master Craft Chevrolet). After a green-white-checkered finish, Steckly beat Gibbons to the finish line by just .341 seconds.
Earlier in the season, Steckly had a dominate car at SunValley Speedway in Vernon, B.C., but a green-white-checkered finish in that event allowed J.R. Fitzpatrick (No. 84 Milwaukee Electric Tools Chevrolet) to make a last lap pass for the win. There would be no denying Steckly this time around.
“I thought about it when that caution came out,” said Steckly. “I said to myself, ‘Oh no, not again.’ I was not about to let it happen again.”
Five Canadian Tire Series events, this season, were decided on the last lap. So, it was not beyond the realm of imagination for it to happen a sixth time. Gibbons was every bit as hungry for that first NASCAR win as Steckly.
“Peter (Gibbons) and I have raced each other hard over the years and we have a good relationship, so I was much more concerned with hitting my marks or him just beating me than I was about him spinning me or anything like that,” said the victor.
Steckly’s results this season have not always been indicative of the way he has run having been bitten by the bad luck bug on more than one occasion. However, this will make the off-season a little sweeter.
“We’ve had out share of bad things this year, but this win takes a great portion of that away,” he said. “This momentum will carry us through the off-season and right into next year.”
Ron Beauchamp Jr. (No. 60 Mopar/Mobil 1 Dodge) logged his best finish of the year with his third-place effort. Beauchamp, too, was snake bit at times throughout the year with various motor problems.
“After the year we had, this is as good as a win,” he stated.
Derek Lynch (No. 77 Allied Steel Buildings/Canadian Shield Dodge) and Dave Whitlock (No. 39 Dickies/Hamilton Tiger-Cats Dodge) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Ranger, Jim Lapcevich, Jason White, Don Thomson Jr. and John Gaunt rounded out the top 10.
As for the battle for the championship, Ranger, out of Roxton Pond, Quebec, did what he needed to do. He stayed on the lead lap and finished in the top 10. He came into the race with a 41-point lead on D.J. Kennington (No. 17 Castrol Dodge), but Kennington blew a motor on lap 98 which, in effect, handed the title to Ranger. Had Kennington been able to stay in the race, it may have gotten interesting. After starting the race in the 15th, Kennington worked his way all the way up to the sixth position while Ranger was running in the middle of the pack. At one point, according to the running order, Kennington had trimmed the lead to just 16 points, but that was as close as it would get. The final unofficial margin was 103 points.
Ranger came into the season with just one stock car race under his belt, but he was no stranger to being near the top of the point standings. He finished 10th in the final CHAMP Car World Series standings a year ago.
Despite his success over the years in all kinds of cars, this title ranks at the top of his achievements.
“This is really something to win the first NASCAR Canadian Tire Series championship,” said Ranger. “I came into the year thinking that a top-five finish in points would be a great year, but to win the championship is way more than I thought was possible. The competition in this series is tough. It really was a great year.”
In addition to Ranger, both Kennington and Fitzpatrick are looking at their options for racing their way into the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown during the October 19 qualifying race.
