Gibbs Will Name Toyota Next Week
Joe Gibbs Racing, which has fielded General Motors cars in NASCAR competition since the organization’s inception in 1992, will move to Toyota beginning in 2008, The Charlotte Observer has learned. A news conference has been tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at JGR’s headquarters in Huntersville, N.C., where the official announcement is set to take place, sources said on Thursday. Officials with Toyota, JGR and Nextel Cup drivers Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin are scheduled to be in attendance. Officials with Toyota declined to comment.

Crew Chief For A Day Contest Winner
WYPALL* Wipers is excited to announce the winner of the Crew Chief for a Day Sweepstakes. Jonathan Muller of Athens, GA, was selected among thousands of entries to join crew chief, Kenny Francis, and the No. 9 Dodge Dealers team at Bristol Motor Speedway for the running of the Sharpie 500. Muller will have the experience of a lifetime, as he becomes part of the No. 9 team for the day, learning just what it takes for a crew chief to prepare for one of NASCAR’s biggest events. Muller, a warehouse foreman and avid NASCAR enthusiast, who will spend the day alongside the No. 9 crew, was thrilled about his upcoming experience.

Government Asks For Ruling
The U.S. government has asked a judge to rule in its favor over the actions of air-traffic controllers in connection with lawsuits from three widows of the 2004 Hendrick Motorsports plane crash in Martinsville, Va. The government blames the Hendrick pilots, Richard Tracy and Elizabeth Morrison, for the accident, and asks that the judge rule before the case goes to trial. In its motion, the government alleges the pilots, when realizing they missed the airport, began to climb to find the airport instead of making a climbing right turn to avoid Bull Mountain, where the plane crashed, killing 10 people.

Hendrick Trademarks Five Numbers
The latest rumor about Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s car number involves the No. 38, with at least two reports this week that Robert Yates Racing had been approached about giving up that number for Earnhardt Jr. and his 2008 team at Hendrick Motorsports. Indeed, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s Trademark Electronic Search System, the No. 38 is one of five numbers for which Hendrick Motorsports recently has applied for trademarks for a wide array of products that could be used in marketing the Earnhardt Jr. team. Applications were filed Aug. 9 for the 38 and 51. Earlier applications were filed on July 5 for the No. 81 and on Aug. 2 for the 58 and the 82

Caterpillar, Inc., has been making motorsports sponsorship news on a couple of fronts this week with the renewal of its Nextel Cup contract with Bill Davis Racing and the announcement of a new 2008 sponsorship, along with dealer groups, of an NHRA Top Fuel dragster. The contract with BDR is a multi-year deal, said Caterpillar director of racing operations Greg Towles. He would not be more specific as to the length of the agreement. Towles said the company decided to continue the relationship, even though the team has struggled in recent years, because of two main factors – the team’s improved performance in recent weeks and the promise of future success with Toyota. “We’ve been real encouraged with the way the team has been running lately – we’ve had a couple of top 10s in the last few races,” said Towles, “and we think Toyota is going to bring a lot to NASCAR Nextel Cup.” Towles also said the team’s driver, Dave Blaney, will be signed to an extension. “He and (crew chief) Tommy Baldwin are really starting to click and they’ve been really qualifying well and running well so we have high expectations for the remainder of this season and into next year,” Towles said.(Peoria Journal Star)(8-31-2007)

Joe Gibbs Racing is expected to announce next week it will join Toyota Motorsports beginning next season, sources told ESPN.com. A news conference has been scheduled for Wednesday morning at JGR headquarters. Expected to be in attendance are team drivers Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin. A GM official reached Thursday in Detroit said the manufacturer would not comment. Toyota Motorsports officials were equally mum.(ESPN.com)(8-31-2007)

#18-J.J. Yeley, Nextel Cup’s latest free agent, has said he is in conversation with four teams, which he would not disclose, but Robert Yates Racing [Yates/Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing] president Doug Yates is happy to report his team is extremely interested in hiring Yeley. RYR will have a vacancy now that veteran Ricky Rudd has announced he is retiring from full-time Cup racing after this season. #38-David Gilliland also drives for RYR. “We’re very interested in J.J.,” Yates said Wednesday. “He’d be good for our company. He’s very marketable, and he’s a pretty good driver. We’re talking to him. We are definitely interested.” Yates said there is no timetable to get a deal done. He said he is convinced that with the right team chemistry, Yeley can succeed. Yeley currently is 20th in points, while his JGR teammates, Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin, are firmly in the Chase. “How can you say a guy two years into the sport is not making the cut?” Yates said. “He needs to be with a team that believes in him.”(ESPN.com)(8-31-2007)

Before James Hylton began his first full season on NASCAR’s top circuit in 1966, he bought a year-old Dodge Coronet from Cotton Owens’ factory-backed team for $5,500. Front Row Joe

Furniture Row Racing welcomes driver Joe Nemechek this weekend. “Front Row Joe” will be piloting the #78 Cup car in California. Nemechek will have his work cut out for him. The Furniture Row Racing’s program R 07 engines from Chevy won’t be ready until the Kansas race. Hence, the team is leaning on Nemechek’s impressive qualifying history to make up for the difference in HP.

California Speedway is a grueling 2- mile track that takes a toll on engines. The track offers a lot of the same characteristics as Michigan, but this race has an additional 100 miles.

The team has regrouped for California after a disappointing DNQ at Bristol last weekend. General Manager, Joe Garone explains the slippery situation that resulted in the DNQ.

“We were having a solid weekend until qualifying. Sterling was great to work with and we were doing well in practice. Unfortunately, we drew the second car out for our qualifying run, and this became a factor. The sun baked the track, and with no cars on it prior to qualifying, the top layer of rubber turned to oil. We were sliding during our qualifying run and it cost us.”

Where is … Lyndon Amick? Lyndon Amick is on the ground in Afghanistan, deployed there for the last four months as a part of the South Carolina National Guard. Amick today lives in a barracks with 12 other men. There’s a mess hall, gym and common room, where the computers and television are located. Internet access is spotty. Playing soldier is not an option for Amick. He’s a real soldier, up against a very real danger. There may be those of his comrades in arms who want a little action, but not Amick. Not necessarily. He just wants to come home, safe and sound, to Melanie and their kids. He’s scheduled for a 15-day leave in January, and should return for good just a few months after that.(NASCAR.com). When asked about setting the new mark, the 37-year-old Keller said, “This is a milestone that no one has reached and I can’t say that it isn’t a big deal, because it is. The NASCAR Busch Series has been a big part of my life for over 15 years so this is very important to me, but I’m looking forward to 400 more.”

Keller will be making his 414th career start this weekend at California Speedway, three shy of the record. Keller will be making his sixth start in 2007 for Brewco Motorsports in the #27 Kleenex® Ford Fusion. In five previous races for Brewco in ‘07, Keller has averaged a 19.8 finish and 15.8 start. His best finish is 5th at Milwaukee; best start 4th at Gateway. (NASCAR/BM PR) Check out Keller’s career accomplishments to date to follow the countdown to his record-breaking run.

Who to Watch: Gateway
08-30-2007 | Charles Krall, Associate Editor
Who to Watch: Gateway With Bristol in the rear-view mirror, the drivers and teams that made it through in one piece are breathing a collective sigh of relief while the drivers and teams that had to load their trucks up in a bucket are busy regrouping and wondering what went wrong. The next track on the schedule may not be as demanding as the half-mile high-banks in northeastern Tennessee but it is a unique challenge unto itself. The Gateway International Raceway is 1.25 miles, so it qualifies as a superspeedway but with the tight radius corners in turns one and two and the flat sweeping corners in turns three and four it might also qualify as both a short track and a road course.

ESPN Stop Covering (Up) the Race
by Guest Contributor: Mary Beth Voelker
ESPN seems to have mistaken the meaning of the word “coverage” to mean burying the race under layers of blather, favoritism, highlights from other events, pre-taped “features”, and trick camera angles. Here’s a thought for you, ESPN — instead of “covering” the race, how about “presenting” it?
