Dale Jr. Makes 8th Rock Video
Dale Earnhardt Jr. wants to be a rock star. The notion is by no means a stretch, as his high-profile sponsors, record-setting merchandise sales, and cross-over appeal often labels him NASCAR’s own “rock star”. That image, coupled with his well-documented appreciation for music, made Earnhardt Jr. a perfect fit to be among celebrities featured in the new music video “Rockstar” for multi-platinum rock group Nickelback. The video debuted last week and is now available on MTV.com. This marks Earnhardt Jr.’s eighth music video and first since making a cameo appearance in Jay-Z’s heavily anticipated hip-hop single, “Show Me What You Got” in 2006. Earnhardt Jr. also has been featured in videos for artists Three Doors Down, Staind, Sheryl Crow, Trace Adkins, O.A.R., and the Matthew Good Band.

Big Red scheme for Montoya at Watkins Glen: Juan Pablo Montoya’s #42 Dodge Avenger in the Nextel Cup Series and his #42 Dodge Charger in the Busch Series will carry the colors of Wrigley’s Big Red this weekend at Watkins Glen International. This weekend marks the second time Montoya’s Cup car has carried the Big Red logo, he previously ran this paint scheme at Chicagoland. Next weekend the car returns to the black and red of Texaco/Havoline for Michigan. There is one additional race for Big Red, which is Labor Day weekend at California Speedway.(Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates PR), see images of the scheme on my #42 Team Schemes page.(8-10-2007) http://www.jayski.com/schemes/2007/42cup.htm

More on Draft Track: The University of Washington says its computer scientists have developed software to illustrate the drafting effect of NASCAR race cars. The university says the technology was used by the Sportvision company of Chicago and ESPN to create “Draft Track.” It uses fluid dynamics math algorithms to create real-time displays of colors trailing behind cars. Green, blue, yellow and red correspond to different speeds and directions for air flow. It shows viewers how drivers can use drafting to save gas or pick up speed.(AP/Seattle Post-Intelligencer)(8-10-2007)

Montoya to appear on ABC’s Good Morning America: #42-Juan Pablo Montoya and his wife Connie Montoya will be guests on ABC’s Good Morning America on Wednesday, August 15 promoting ABC’s NASCAR in Primetime Special. The ABC News crew spent weeks with Montoya at the track and obtained minute-by-minute footage of his victory in Sonoma. The program took a glimpse into the lives of several drivers including Montoya and his Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates teammate David Stremme. The show captured his life away from the track, on the golf course and at home in Miami with his wife and children. The six-week, six-episode program premieres Wednesday, August 15 at 9:00pm/et on ABC.(Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates PR)(8-10-2007)

Watkins Glen Rookie Notes: #42-Juan Pablo Montoya was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in the August 5 Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway, scoring a 16th-place finish. He took top rookie honors for the 10th time this season and for the third consecutive race. Montoya leads David Ragan by 26 points (211-185) in the Raybestos Rookie standings entering the August 12 Centurion Boats at The Glen at Watkins Glen International. Montoya is 18th in the Nextel Cup Series championship standings, best of any Raybestos Rookie. The best finish by a Raybestos Rookie at Watkins Glen is second by Ryan Newman in 2002. Only one other Raybestos Rookie has scored a top-five finish at The Glen: Robby Gordon, who placed fourth in 1997. The best qualifying effort by a Raybestos Rookie at Watkins Glen is second by Greg Biffle in 2003.(Camp & Assoc/Raybestos PR), see the full standings, history and more on my 2007 Rookies Page.(8-10-2007) http://www.jayski.com/stats/2007/roty2007.htm

Watkins Glen Goodyear Tire Notes: Nextel Cup teams will run the same Goodyear tire code (D-4110) on all four tire positions at Watkins Glen International this weekend . . . this is the same tire code that Goodyear brought to the Nextel Cup Series’ other road course race at Infineon Raceway in June . . . this code is also run on the right-side at Martinsville . . . this is the first time this tire has been run at Watkins Glen . . . Busch Series teams will run a different tire code (D-4112) this weekend . . . as on all NASCAR road courses, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Watkins Glen. The estimated pit window for the Cup teams is every 30-32 laps, based on fuel mileage. Busch Series teams will run the same tire code (D-4112) on all four tire positions at Watkins Glen International this weekend . . . this is Goodyear’s road course tire for the Busch Series in 2007, and is slightly different than that run on the NASCAR Nextel Cup cars . . . Busch teams have run this tire at Mexico City earlier this season and at Montreal last weekend . . .Goodyear will bring 600 wet weather tires (D-5648) to Watkins Glen this weekend, in case NASCAR decides to run in rainy conditions . . . as on all NASCAR road courses, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Watkins Glen.(Goodyear PR), for the full notes, codes and pressures, see my Watkins Glen Race Info page.(8-10-2007) http://www.jayski.com/next/2007/22watkins2007.htm#goodyear

Montoya could make history: #42-Juan Pablo Montoya will look to make Nextel Cup Series history this Sunday at Watkins Glen International by becoming the first driver to win on three different road courses in the same season. So far this year, Montoya won road-course events in the Busch Series (Mexico City) and in the Nextel Cup Series (Infineon), becoming only the third NASCAR driver to ever post two road course wins in different series in the same year. Ernie Irvan in 1992 at Infineon, Nextel Cup Series; Watkins Glen, Busch Series; and Darrell Waltrip in 1986 at Riverside, Nextel Cup Series; Road Atlanta, Busch Series have also accomplished that feat.(Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates PR)(8-9-2007)

Hylton gets a sponsor for Talladega: SLMCO Pure Water Systems announced that it would become the primary sponsor of #58-James Hylton in both the Nextel Cup Series and the ARCA series races at Talladega Superspeedway in Oct. SLMCO Pure Water Systems manufactures portable Reverse Osmosis machines that produce 450 gallons of pure water per day and weigh only 70 lbs. The company also manufactures custom compact machines and containerized self-contained mobile units with generators. Viewer’s Guide: The Glen
Rusty Wallace was a six-time winner on road courses in his Cup Series career including two victories at Watkins Glen. Wallace posted seven top-fives and 10 top-10s in 20 career starts at The Glen, so who better to discuss racing there than the current ESPN analyst? (editor’s note: Uh, I can think of quite a few)

Fantasy Preview: The Glen
Only five race weekends have passed since the Nextel Cup Series rolled out of Infineon Raceway and in three of those events drivers challenged the flat tracks of New Hampshire International Speedway, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Pocono Raceway. Many drivers think the entry into a road-course corner is similar to that of the flat tracks, so they have kept their skills sharp.

Get Going at the Glen

This Sunday’s Centurion Boats at the Glen marks the return of the Car of Tomorrow-NASCAR’s new-generation race car that will compete fulltime in 2008. The new car last raced July 1 at New Hampshire International Speedway. This week’s visit to the Glen is the second on a road course this season. However, Watkins Glen presents a longer layout for driver Kenny Wallace and the 78 Cup crew. The Glen’s 2.45 mile track is also the new car’s longest distance to date.

This week’s race provides another opportunity for the 78 team to get back on track. After having ptoblems during practice and qualifying at Pocono, the team was sent packing. Joe Garone, GM of Furniture Row Racing, provides the play by play of the events that transpired and resulted in a no go at Pocono.

“We broke another engine. This time it was in practice with about a 1/2 hour left. At that time, we were the 6th star car of the 8 that needed to qualify, and in the top 30 on time. I believed we were finally ready to break our non-qualifying streak, but it wasn’t to be. In the scramble to get the engine changed, the team did not get one of the oil lines tight enough and it started to leak as Kenny was coming to take the green flag for his qualifying run. Kenny came down pit road and the team did a good job of fixing the problem, but we were not able to cool the engine back down. In addition, the car now had hot, oily tires. NASCAR had us go back out under these conditions.

During Kenny’s qualifying lap it started to rain. The car was sliding all over the place. Kenny couldn’t even run as fast as he did in practice.

Despite the disappointment, we will keep working hard and take our best effort to the Glen this weekend. The good news is we had a great test at the Virginia road course. Kenny was two seconds faster than the last time we tested there.”

Xpress Motorsports teams up with business development group: In an effort to maximize its’ exposure to potential teams, drivers, sponsors and marketing firms Xpress Motorsports’ team owner Dave Fuge has announced that Connection Motorsports Group has come aboard to conduct its’ business development activities. “I think that in today’s motorsports market it is difficult or one person to concentrate on both the business development and performance development without compromising results on-track, and for those reasons I have elected to retain CMGs’ services” stated Fuge. “First and foremost I am 100% racer and my success in the past has come from focusing on staying ahead of the competition and now I will be able to concentrate on that again.” Fuge has enjoyed a successful career in motorsports that spans thirty-seven years and includes ownership of a Nextel Cup Team in the 1990′s guiding Bobby Hamilton to the “1991 Rookie of the Year” honors and Loy Allen to the “1994 Daytona 500 Pole”. Additionally, he has developed Xpress Motorsports that claimed two championships in 2002 and 2003 in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with Mike Bliss and Travis Kvapil.(CMG/Xpress Motorsports PR)(8-9-2007)

Who to Watch: Nashville The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series returns to action after a week off, and the teams and drivers head to Nashville Superspeedway for one of the most unique challenges they face all season long. The 1.33-mile tri-oval seems routine enough, but the concrete racing surface offers up a narrow groove and an ultra-slick surface outside that groove that often leads to problems. Last year it came down to a shootout between Todd Bodine and Mike Skinner, and when they started bumping one another on the last lap it opened the door for Johnny Benson to celebrate with the Gibson guitar on victory lane.

Toyota To Sponsor ARCA RE/MAX Series Event at Nashville
LEBANON TN (8-9-07) – When the ARCA RE/MAX Series heads to Nashville Superspeedway for this Saturday’s race, it will mark the 14th appearance of the national tour at the 1.33-mile concrete oval since its inaugural appearance in 2001.
It will also mark the first time an ARCA RE/MAX Series event will carry title sponsorship from Toyota.
The Toyota ARCA 150 is set to roll off LIVE on SPEED at 3:30 pm ET Saturday afternoon, August 11th.
The Toyota brand is coming off its best ARCA RE/MAX Series finish to date after Josh Wise drove the No. 22 Eddie Sharp/Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota Camry to a second place finish in the Pennsylvania 200 at Pocono Raceway last Saturday.
It was also where Bobby Santos, III earned his second career SIM Factory Pole Award in the Bill Davis Racing Toyota. Santos also won the pole in the Bill Davis Toyota at USA Int’l Speedway back in March, giving Toyota two pole awards in the ARCA RE/MAX Series.
The Toyota brand also scored a pair of third place finishes at Kentucky Speedway earlier this year, each with Santos driving.
Ken Butler, III, of Sherrills Ford, North Carolina, will carry the torch for Toyota in the Toyota ARCA 150 at Nashville in the No. 22 ESR Development Team-NAPA Toyota.
“We are encouraged by the early success of the Camry and the young development drivers in the ARCA series to-date and hope to see our first ARCA win in the near future,” said Toyota’s National Motorsports Manager, Les Unger.
ARCA and Toyota officially announced at the SEMA Show in 2006 that the Toyota Camry was approved for competition in 2007 with a target event being the Daytona ARCA 200 in February, 2007.
The move broadened Toyota’s base of stock car racing participation, which began with the Goody’s Dash Series in 2000. The auto manufacturer moved up to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2004 and previously announced its plans to participate in the Nextel Cup and Busch Series in 2007.
Practice for the Toyota ARCA 150 is scheduled from 11:00am to 1:30pm Friday afternoon, August 10th followed by SIM Factory Pole Award Qualifying at 5:30pm. The Toyota ARCA 150 is LIVE on SPEED at 3:30pm ET Saturday afternoon, August 11th.
