Indefinite Suspension For Robby Gordon If Probation Is Violated In Any NASCAR Series: NASCAR announced today that Robby Gordon, driver and owner of the No. 55 Ford in the NASCAR Busch Series, has been fined $35,000 and placed on probation until Dec. 31, 2007 due to a rule violation during last Saturday’s race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. Gordon was found to be in violation of Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing) of the 2007 NASCAR Busch Series Rule Book. The fine and probation also carried the stipulation that if, during the remaining NASCAR events in 2007, there is another action by Gordon that is deemed by NASCAR officials as detrimental to stock car racing or to NASCAR, or is disruptive to the orderly conduct of an event (any NASCAR sanctioned event), he will be suspended indefinitely from NASCAR. – NASCAR, Press Release

Robby Gordon Will Provide Cup Car For Ambrose
Robby Gordon Motorsports will field Australian Marcos Ambrose in the Busch Series rookie’s NASCAR Nextel Cup Series debut in the Centurion Boats at The Glen at Watkins Glen this weekend. After one of the most controversial incidents in NASCAR’s recent history last weekend, Ambrose has accepted a ‘peace offering’ from Gordon to drive the #77 Camping World Ford Fusion, which will also carry some signage from Ambrose’s regular sponsor Kingsford Charcoal. Ambrose led 37 laps, more than any other driver, in the NAPA Auto Parts 200 in Montreal last weekend and was on course to record his first NASCAR Busch Series win when he was turned around by Gordon while leading at the second corner at a restart with two laps remaining. As a penalty, Gordon was eliminated from the following day’s Nextel Cup race, and while he strongly disagreed with the calls during the Busch race, he has accepted NASCAR’s decision and wants to put the incident behind him. Ambrose will continue his NASCAR Busch campaign on Saturday in the #59 Kingsford Charcoal Ford Fusion for Wood Brothers/JTG Racing, but will now do ‘double duty’ in the Robby Gordon Motorsports entry.
Spirit Award To Bill France
William Clifton France, the guiding force behind the phenomenal growth of NASCAR for more than three decades, has been named the second-quarter recipient of the National Motorsports Press Association/Pocono Spirit Award. France, known a bit less formally as Bill Jr. by those in the sport, served as president of NASCAR from 1972-2000. Three years later, he stepped aside from his duties as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the sanctioning body, turning those duties over to his son, Brian Z. France. But despite his seemingly lesser role, and a lengthy battle with cancer in his later years, France Jr. remained an active voice in the sport. His opinions and decision-making ability helped reshape the structure of the current NASCAR Nextel Cup Series schedule as it became more national in scope, he oversaw the creation of the group’s $10 million Research and Development Center, and helped broker deals that brought Nextel in as the premier series’ sponsor as well as the return of network television coverage for the sport.

MWR to two teams? to lose UPS? Toyota is expected to pair down Michael Waltrip racing from a three-car effort to a two-car squad, shifting some of that support to JGR’s three-car team of Kyle Busch, Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin. Dale Jarrett is said to be seriously considering retirement, trading in his helmet for a microphone as a television analyst, which would leave MWR with Michael Waltrip and David Reutimann. There has been talk that UPS, unhappy with the lack of exposure the company has received this year from Jarrett’s struggles to make races, is looking at other teams for 2008 sponsorship with Roush Fenway Racing a target, possibly for Greg Biffle’s #16 entry.(RacingOne)(8-8-2007)
Chase Notes/Stats before Watkins Glen: Positions 10-12 Are in Play: #10-Clint Bowyer (+160), #11-Martin Truex (+45), and #12-Kurt Busch (+7) are very much in play with five races left in The Race to The Chase. #13-Dale Jr. (-7), and #14-Ryan Newman (-90) are in strong contention. #15-Mark Martin (-216), #16-Greg Biffle (-216), #17-Jamie McMurray (-252) #18-Juan Pablo Montoya (-267) and #19-Casey Mears (-286) have to be considered real long shots at this point. With a good run at Watkins-Glen, frontrunner Jeff Gordon can tie up the first of 12 Chase spots Sunday. The magic margin for Gordon to come out of The Glen with is 781 points in front of 13th place. He starts the race 844 points ahead of 13th-place Dale Earnhardt Jr. For more see my Chase Stats after Pocono page.(8-8-2007) http://www.jayski.com/stats/2007/chase/21poc2007chase.htm

Patrick Carpentier to Drive for Valvoline Evernham Racing at Watkins Glen
STATESVILLE, N.C. (August 7, 2007) – In an effort to move closer to securing a top-35 position in Owner’s Points, Valvoline Evernham Racing has reached a one race agreement with Patrick Carpentier to drive the No. 10 Valvoline/Stanley Tools Dodge in this weekend’s Nextel Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International. Carpentier recently made his first NASCAR start in the NASCAR Busch Series race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. The road course veteran proved to be a quick learner as he won the pole for the event, led 14 laps and finished an impressive second. Carpentier has competed in CART, IRL, CASCAR, and Grand-Am series with much success. Now just one week after his Busch Series debut, Carpentier will make his Nextel Cup debut in the No. 10 Dodge Avenger. Valvoline Evernham Racing currently sits in 37th position in Nextel Cup Owners Points, 134 points out of the crucial top 35 cutoff.
“We look forward to having Patrick Carpentier behind the wheel of the No. 10 Valvoline/Stanley Tools Dodge this weekend at Watkins Glen,” said Jim Rocco, Team Owner of Valvoline Evernham Racing. “Carpentier turned a lot of heads with his strong run in Montreal last weekend. This Valvoline Evernham Racing team is focused on doing everything we can to make races, and we have made twelve so far while outside the top 35. As part of those efforts, we believe that Patrick can place Valvoline Evernham Racing in a good position leaving Watkins Glen in order to help Scott Riggs make a run to the top 35 in points by the end of the season.”

NEW BRISTOL MOTOR SPEEDWAY SURFACE GETS HIGH MARKS
BRISTOL, Tenn. (Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007) – What was billed as a facelift turned into major surgery this summer as Bristol Motor Speedway’s surface underwent its first major change since the original concrete replaced asphalt 15 years ago.
The reconstruction of the surface that had been placed in the summer of 1992 began March 26, the day after Kyle Busch captured the Food City 500, when workers began tearing up the old surface and replacing it with concrete.
Work on the multi-million dollar project was completed in mid-July and the end result is a much smoother track with an even more distinct look to it. Over the years, the previous surface had developed a crown effect creating a convex shape. Now, with variable banking, the track has more of a bowl-shape to it, which designers believe will lend itself to offering drivers more racing options. The transitions going into and coming out of the turns also were adjusted.
A number of drivers tested the new surface in July and the majority left Bristol impressed with the new layout and anxious to return for the August NASCAR events.
“I think our development guys did a tremendous job with the track,” said BMS president Jeff Byrd. “The drivers I spoke with were very pleased with the surface and couldn’t wait to get here for the August events. We wanted a smoother surface with better transitions in the corners and I believe that’s exactly what we got. And because of that we should have some fantastic racing in a couple of weeks.”
After three late model race events in late July and early August, the first NASCAR races on the new surface will be on Wednesday, Aug. 22 when the O’Reilly 200 Craftsman Truck Series event takes place along with the Food City 150 USAR Hooters ProCup event. The Food City 250 Busch Series race is Friday, Aug. 24, followed by the sold-out Sharpie 500, NASCAR’s most popular race, on Saturday, Aug. 25.
BMS Resurfacing Track Facts:
It required 3000 cubic yards of concrete for the top layer of the surface.
More than 20,000 cubic yards of concrete was required for the project, including sub-surface, walls, etc.
More than 650 tons of rebar was needed to complete the entire project.
650 tons is equivalent in weight to 382 NASCAR Nextel Cup cars, 1,182 full-grown Kodiak bears, 1,625,000 12-ounce Coca-Colas (or approximately 10 for everyone attending the Sharpie 500) and 41,600,000 Sharpies.
Approximately 149 tons or rebar was required for the surface itself.
The new track surface, including sub-base, base and surface is 17 inches thick. It is made up of six inches of lime-treated stone on the bottom, followed by four inches of lean grade concrete, rebar and the final layer is seven inches of continuously reinforced concrete.
The pits are now concrete, whereas before they were asphalt.
The old track surface was 40 feet wide. It is now 43 feet wide.
There are 43 pit stalls and each stall measures 16’x28,’ two feet wider than they were previously.
An average of 50 workers took part in the resurfacing project. They worked, on average, six days a week, 14 hours a day. When the actual surface work began with the concrete, workers worked in 12-hour shifts, 24 hours a day.
Crews removed 1,815 cubic yards of concrete from the old track — constituting the surface only.
Crews removed 842 cubic yards of wall concrete.
A total of 5,500 square yards of asphalt was removed. That is more than an acre of asphalt and amounts to 275 20-ton truck loads of material.
A total of 38,944 square yards – more than eight acres – of dirt was removed, amounting to 1,948 truck loads of material. 38,944 square yards amounts to slightly more than six football fields measuring 120 yards long from back of end zone to back of end zone and 53.3 yards wide.

MARTIN DRIVES HOME POINT WITH LIMITED SCHEDULE
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 7, 2007) – While the rest of the Nextel Cup circuit prepares for the winding right turns of Watkins Glen International, veteran Mark Martin is gearing up to once again watch this weekends race on the television. Regan Smith will drive the No. 01 U.S. Army Chevy on Sunday.
After running the previous four races at Daytona, Chicagoland, Indianapolis and Pocono, Martin will take off his sixth race of the season this weekend, before returning in two weeks at Michigan.
Despite having missed a total of five Nextel Cup point races in 2007, Martin sits tied for 15th position in the point standings; theoretically still in contention for the 12-car Chase for the Nextel Cup.
“That really says more about this No. 01 U.S. Army Race Team than anything,” said Martin. “These guys are just incredible. They give me great cars each week and I have an awesome time driving their stuff.”
While that will all likely become a moot point after this weekend, it is interesting to note that it was supposed to become a moot point after Martin missed his first race in 19 years earlier this year at Bristol. Martin stepped away from the Nextel Cup point lead in style; leading the standings.
Amazingly enough, Martin raced his way back into the top 12 by mid June, despite having missed three of the 14 races. Currently, Martin is ahead in the points of 13 drivers who have competed in all 21 Cup events. He leads 21 drivers who have raced in more events in 2007 and has scored more points than three teams who have won this season.
Ironically, Martin is currently tied with former Roush teammate Greg Biffle for 15th place in the Cup standings. Biffle’s team is made up mostly of Martins No. 6 team from 2006.
In addition, Martin has helped keep the No. 01 Chevy inside the top 10 in the owner points all season. Currently the No. 01 is in 10th place in the owner standings, eight points behind ninth and just 32 points outside of seventh place.
Martin is enjoying his limited schedule and has plans to run a similar slate of races next year.
“I love it,” said Martin. “I’ve had the time of my life driving these cars and I can’t wait to come back and drive for these guys again. Right now we are planning a similar schedule next season. I’ve lobbied since February to be able to come back next year and drive Ryan Pemberton’s race cars and I’m glad to see that all coming together again.”

Carpentier now in #22-Supercuts Dodge at Watkins Glen: Patrick Carpentier will be driving the #22 Supercuts Dodge for Fitz Motorsports in Watkins Glen, not Carlos Contreras. A formal announcement is scheduled for this afternoon. [Carpentier is also scheduled to replace Scott Riggs in the #10 Dodge this weekend for the Cup race.] (8-7-2007)
Bourque parts ways with Fitz Motorsports, announcing new plans shortly: Canadian driver Pierre Bourque has parted ways with the Fitz Motorsports team. Bourque drove one Busch East Series event for the team this season at Iowa Speedway with plans of teaming up for more events in Busch East and the Busch Series this year. He made his Craftsman Truck Series debut for Andy Hillenburg’s Fast Track Racing team at Indianapolis’ O’Reilly Raceway Park last month and has been a semi-regular in the Canadian Tire Series, driving for Whitlock Motorsports. Ambrose not holding a grudge, optimistic this weekend
After dominating last weekend’s NAPA Auto Parts 200 Busch Series race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve before being taken out during the green-white-checkered finish, Marcos Ambrose is determined to prove the Montreal race was no fluke.

Gordon’s ‘Sorry’ Comes With Cup Ride: Robby Gordon Motorsports will field Australian Marcos Ambrose in the Busch Series rookie’s NASCAR Nextel Cup Series debut in the Centurion Boats at The Glen at Watkins Glen this weekend. The Sunday event will be a joint effort between Robby Gordon Motorsports and Wood Brothers/JTG Racing, with Ambrose’s regular Kingsford crew doing the pit work and his new Crew Chief Ernie Cope calling the shots from the box on Sunday. Ambrose was originally scheduled to make his Nextel Cup debut in a Wood Brothers/JTG Racing entry this weekend, but several circumstances meant the team had to put their plans on hold. “There are a couple of reasons why I’m doing this,” said Gordon. “The first reason is that it’s unfortunate that Marcos got put in a position in Montreal where I was thinking, ‘OK, if I’m not going to win, he’s not going to win.’ At the same time, I think he’s a talented race-car driver, and obviously he has the ability to compete at the highest level. He showed that last weekend in the Busch race, and I felt that this opportunity would be a make-up.As a team owner, I’m excited about giving him this opportunity. I look forward to running two cars this weekend, I look forward to getting them in the show, and at the end of the day, I hope it comes down to the two of us to win the race.”“Well, they say that America is the land of opportunity and I guess this is proof of that,” said Ambrose. “A bit of old outback Australian culture involved playing a game of Australian football, having a fight and then heading to the pub together for a beer – I guess this is a bit like that. This is part apology and part compliment on Robby’s behalf… Obviously, this indicates there is no animosity between us, and we will both be out there looking for the best result possible in our Fords.” (08-07-07)

NASCAR notables Ray Dunlap (SPEED), Claire B. Lang (XM Radio) and Mark Garrow (PRN/DirecTV Hot Pass) will be on hand to discuss critical media skills. Skinner on course to make history: After 14 races, Mike Skinner’s 2007 is a season full of big numbers – four wins, seven pole positions, top 10s in all but one race, and series-leading marks by wide margins for miles-led, laps-led, races-led, best running position, average finish and driver rating as driver of the #5 Toyota Tundra from the dominant Bill Davis Racing NCTS three-team stable. But it’s that chronological number – his championship year (1995) – that is most significant. Should he win the 2007 NCTS title, Skinner would join what is perhaps NASCAR’s most exclusive club, joining Terry Labonte as the only drivers to go as long as 12 seasons between championships in any major series. Mike and Terry. That would be the list, a very short list, considering that almost 4,000 drivers have started at least one race in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, the NASCAR Busch Series, the NCTS and their preceding permutations dating back 59 seasons to the race-on-the-beach, Bowman Gray Stadium days of the late 1940′s.(Bill Davis Racing PR)(8-7-2007)
Matthews & TRD team up for Nashville: Ryan Mathews and the #22 team continue to seek permanent sponsorship, but the outfit will receive sponsorship this weekend at the Nashville Superspeedway from Triad Racing Development. This Week in Ford Racing: Erik Darnell
Erik Darnell, driver of the No. 99 Northern Tool + Equipment Ford F-150 was the pole sitter for last year’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Nashville Superspeedway. Darnell talks about returning to Nashville and his goals for the rest of the year. “Nashville is a place that I look forward to going to, kind of like Kentucky. I have experience there before; not only in a truck and in an ARCA car, but also in a NASCAR Late Model car and I’ve run pretty well there. I’m looking forward to getting back to Nashville this year.”

For Immediate Release
NASCAR CANADIAN TIRE SERIES PRESENTED BY SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO
NEWS & NOTES – FULL THROTTLE ENERGY DRINK 200
presented by CANADIAN SHIELD ANTICRIME RESPONSE CORPORATION
· Graham Looking Forward To Mosport Speedway Race
· NAPA AUTOPRO 100 Post-Race Notes
· A Quick Return To Oval Racing
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 7, 2007) – Making left-hand turns exclusively is a welcoming thought for Brad Graham (No. 19 Full Throttle Energy Drink/Challenger Freight Dodge).
Normally, road course racing proves to be a good diversion from oval-course racing, but for NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio drivers, it is the other way around. The series is in a stretch of four races of which three are road course events. The oval race inside this recent span comes this Saturday on the 1/2-mile track at Mosport Speedway near Bowmanville, Ontario.
“I am definitely looking forward to making left-hand turns only,” said Graham.
He freely admits that road racing is not his forte, despite his best two finishes of the season having been a 10th at Mosport International Speedway and a ninth-place effort at the Rexall Grand Prix Edmonton.
“It’s kind of hard to explain, but that’s the way it has worked out this season,” said Graham. “We’ve just had some bad luck in the oval races so far this season.”
Graham, 33, is shaking the bugs out of a brand new racecar this season, which can often lead to new and innovative ways to find the garage area during events.
“We’ve got a great car, but the little things have caught us a few times,” he said. “I think we should have all the kinks worked out of it now.”
The timing could not be better for Graham, racing out of Glencoe, Ontario. Five of the final six events on the 2007 schedule come on traditional oval courses, where he feels his program is better suited at this point. The lone road course event left is the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres, Aug. 17-19.
Even with the sub-par performance on the ovals and working on an improving road course program, Graham still finds himself holding the 12th position in the championship point standings and just 30 points out of the eighth.
“All things considered, we’re not in too bad of shape,” said Graham. “We need to finish strong.”
The level of competition has always been stout in Canada’s top stock car racing series, but this year, with the addition of NASCAR to the equation, it may have become a little fiercer. Graham feels that many of the seasoned veterans have stepped up their programs which has had a trickle down effect on the rest of the competitors.
“There has always been solid competition in Canadian stock car racing. The veteran guys like (Don Thomson Jr.) and Peter Gibbons, just to name two, are really getting after it this year,” Graham said. “Then, you add in the likes of (J.R.) Fitzpatrick and Andrew Ranger. It’s a solid group.”
But the business at hand is the Full Throttle Energy Drink 200 presented by Canadian Shield Anticrime Response Corporation. Graham also carries the Full Throttle colors on his Dodge Charger that might just provide him that extra motivation for his first top five of the season.
“The Full Throttle and Coca-Cola people have been fantastic to work with and I’d like nothing more than to get to victory lane for them this Saturday,” Graham said. “It’s time for us to get moving toward some top-five and podium finishes.”
The track at Mosport Speedway is a known quantity to many of the series drivers. The CASCAR Super Series, predecessor to the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, had visited the track on a number of occasions. It is a relatively flat track with differing sets of turns at each end. Turn two provides an excellent passing zone, while turns three and four are more sweeping in nature. Pit road can be crowded and the sunset can be a problem.
“The best opportunity to pass comes in getting out of turn two, but there is a little bump to deal with there. The other end has momentum turns,” said Graham. “Track position is always important in short track racing, but qualifying well in this race will help with pit stall selection. It can be very busy in there, so I figure that some teams will try and use a short pit strategy. Another factor can be the sunset. If it is a clear day, then the sun makes it hard for a while down in three and four.”
Graham is undoubtedly happy to be back on an oval, albeit just for one week, but look for him to make the most of it and use the opportunity to thank his sponsor in person.
“I’m not at all happy with our performance on the ovals this year,” he said. “This race gives us a great chance to get some momentum built up for the homestretch of the season. What could be better than picking up our first win in front of our sponsor?”
NAPA AUTOPRO 100 Post-Race Notes
Ø Final lap excitement continues … For the third consecutive NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race, the winner made a thrilling last-lap pass for the victory. At Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Kerry Micks (No. 02 Beyond Digital Imaging Ford) was able to work past Ranger (No. 27 Wal-Mart/Tide Ford) on the turns just prior to the long straightaway heading to the checkers. Fitzpatrick (No. 84 Milwaukee Electric Tools Chevrolet) provided the excitement in the prior two. At SunValley Speedway in Vernon, British Columbia, on July 15, he dashed to the outside of Scott Steckly (No. 22 Erb Group Dodge) for the win. A week later at the Rexall Grand Prix Edmonton, Ranger’s car slid to the outside on a turn, allowing Fitzpatrick to pass on the inside for the triumph.
Ø Chevy leads the way … Ford picked up its second win of the season courtesy of Micks, but Chevrolet continues to lead the Canadian Tire Series manufacturer’s standings. Chevy, with 43 points, has three wins in six events this season – two by Fitzpatrick and one by Don Thomson Jr. (No. 4 Home Hardware Chevrolet). Ford, with two victories – Micks and Ranger – ranks second with 36 points. Dodge is just off that pace with 35 points and has a win to its credit at the hands of D.J. Kennington (No. 17 Castrol/Krispy Kreme Dodge).
Ø Mobil 1 Oil “Command Performance of the Race” Award … As a reward for his NASCAR Canadian Tire Series victory at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Micks collects $1,500 from Mobil 1 as a reward for his effort. It was his first NASCAR and Canadian Tire Series win.
Ø Mopar Fast Five … This program awards the top-five finishing Dodges in the race. In the NAPA AUTOPRO 100, the Dodge of Kennington was the top finisher and was awarded $2,000 for his fourth-place showing. Steckly finished fifth overall, but was the second-highest finishing Dodge, which earned him $1,250. Ranked third among the Dodge entrants was Dave Whitlock (No. 39 Dickies/Hamilton Tiger-Cats Dodge), who logged an 11th-place finish. The fourth and fifth-highest finishing Dodges were those of Pierre Bourque (No. 29 DRIVING.CA/Conservative Party of Canada Dodge) and Joey McColm (No. 50 ATTO Insurance Dodge). They finished 12th and 13th, respectively.
Ø Another big crowd for Canadian Tire Series … It’s four and counting for the Canadian Tire Series. For four straight races, the series has raced in front of capacity or near-capacity crowds. This past weekend in Montreal, over 130,000 fans migrated onto Île Notre Dame to see the racing action over the two-day event. Prior to that, the Canadian Tire Series also performed for large crowds in Edmonton, Vernon, British Columbia and Barrie, Ontario.
Ø In case you missed it … For anyone unable to be on hand last Saturday for the NAPA AUTOPRO 100 or who did not catch the live coverage on RDS. TSN and TSN HD will air coverage of the race on Saturday, Aug. 18 at noon Eastern time.
FULL THROTTLE ENERGY DRINK 200 NEWS & NOTES
Ø The race … This event is the seventh race for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio in 2007. The race on the oval of Mosport Speedway breaks a stretch of road course racing for the series. The last two events on the schedule have come on the road/street courses in Edmonton and Montreal. Next week, the Canadian Tire Series wraps up the road course portion of its schedule at Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres in Quebec.
Ø The track … Mosport Speedway is a flat 1/2-mile oval that shares the same complex as Mosport International Raceway, a road course track that the series visited earlier this season, with Ranger picking up his first NASCAR victory.
Ø One-day show … Canadian Tire Series drivers and teams will need to adjust their schedules for this Saturday’s race. The last three races have been multi-day events with practice, qualifying and the race coming on different days. For the Full Throttle Energy Drink 200 presented by Canadian Shield, all of those pieces of the puzzle will come on a single day, Aug. 11.
Ø A long journey for Jason White … While Jason White (No. 21 Mormak Equipment/Twin Anchors Houseboats Chevrolet) will not be on hand for this Saturday’s race at Mosport Speedway, he does have plans to trek eastward later in the season from his Sun Peaks, British Columbia base of operations. The nearly 7,500-mile round trip will allow him to participate in two series events, the Sept. 15 Atlantic Dodge Dealers 300 at Riverside Speedway in Antigonish, Nova Scotia and the season-ending Dodge Dealers of Ontario Dodge Charger 250 at Kawartha Speedway in Peterborough, Ontario on Sept. 23.
Ø Ticket information … For more information about tickets for the Full Throttle Energy Drink 200 presented by Canadian Shield, call the Mosport Hotline at 1-800-866-1072 (Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET) or visit online at www.mosport.com. Tickets are also available at TicketMaster.
