Kyle Busch Picks Joe Gibbs Racing
Kyle Busch chose to drive for Joe Gibbs Racing next season and began informing other NASCAR Nextel Cup Series teams Monday of his decision. A source close to Busch told The Associated Press that the driver had selected Gibbs after a seven-week search that began when Hendrick Motorsports released the 22-year-old to make room for Dale Earnhardt Jr. next season. The source requested anonymity because the deal isn’t final. “Kyle has made his decision and is in the process of informing the teams of his preference,” said Jeff Dickerson, who represents Busch through Motorsports Management International. “As there are many details that still need to be worked out, Kyle will not be making that decision public at this time.” …More http://insiderracingnews.com/Daily/2007/Aug/080707.html
AND FROM THAT’S RACIN’….
The Kyle Busch sweepstakes appears to be over. Busch, who is leaving Hendrick Motorsports at the end of the season, signed a letter of intent last week to join Joe Gibbs Racing and drive its No. 18 Chevrolets beginning next season, the Charlotte Observer has learned. Reached by phone on Monday, Busch’s agent, Jeff Dickerson, would neither confirm nor deny a deal had been reached with Gibbs. “Kyle has made a decision and has a first choice,” Dickerson said. “There are a lot of details that have yet to be worked out.” The letter of intent is not binding and Busch could still theoretically change his mind. http://insiderracingnews.com/Daily/2007/Aug/080707.html

Nardelli Takes Helm At Chrysler
Chrysler’s new chairman and CEO made his debut this (Monday) morning at the automaker’s Auburn Hills headquarters. Chrysler’s Tom LaSorda, who had been CEO under DaimlerChrysler’s ownership, introduced Bob Nardelli, former head of Home Depot, at a morning press conference. Nardelli stood behind a curtain before being unveiled. He stood next to a gray and newly designed Dodge Grand Caravan. Cerberus Capital Management took 80.1% ownership of Chrysler on Friday. In its first bold move, it has named Nardelli as CEO and chairman of Chrysler. LaSorda keeps his president title and become vice chairman. He reports to Nardelli.

Joe Gibbs Racing To Toyota?
Joe Gibbs Racing still hasn’t announced whether it will switch to Toyotas next year, but the buzz is that it will. Some clues? Tony Stewart’s souvenir trailers were selling merchandise at 50 percent off regular price last week at the Brickyard, Stewart’s home track and a place where the Hoosier native is wildly popular. — Also, a source at Richard Childress Racing said it has been approached by Hall of Fame Racing, a satellite Gibbs team, about buying engines from the newly merged RCR-Dale Earnhardt Inc., engine operation in 2008. Presumably, HOF is hedging its bets, if it ends up not being part of a Gibbs move to Toyota.

Eury Jr. Earns Crew Chief Award
Crew Chief Tony Eury Jr. and the No. 8 Budweiser Chevrolet team were sitting pretty for the start of the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway. They were starting from the pole and were primed for a solid run in the Pennsylvania 500, hoping to solidify their place in the top 12, the cut off for the Chase for the Nextel Cup. Eury Jr., however, was working overtime once the green flag waved, as his driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr., was battling a tight race car that was not getting better, slowly dropping him further down the leader board. Eury Jr. kept a cool head and during a mid-race caution, elected to change the Chevrolet’s shocks. The mechanical alterations, as well as effective pit strategy, brought the No. 8 team back from 26th position, to finish the race with a crucial top five. For his gutsy mid-race decision and highly successful pit strategy, Eury Jr. was awarded the WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief of the Race

Yeley to the #21 Ford? UPDATE denied: Kyle Busch has finally decided where he will race next season, agreeing to a deal to drive the #18 Interstate Batteries machine for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2008 and beyond. Busch will replace J.J. Yeley, who will move to Wood Brothers/JTG Racing next season to steer the #21 Ford.(8-6-2007)
UPDATE: Yeleys agent, Kyle Chapman, said there is currently no signed deal between his client and Wood Brothers/JTG Racing, and that Yeley is in discussion with a number of teams about possible rides for next season. But sources with knowledge of the situation say Yeley will indeed be out of the #18 next season, and behind the wheel of the #21 Ford.(Motorsports Soapbox)(8-7-2007)

Red Bull VP/GM leaves; RBR to Chevy?: Citing irreconcilable differences in the team philosophy, Red Bull Racing and Marty Gaunt, formerly the teams vice president/general manager, have parted company effective immediately, the team announced Monday. The team, which is owned by Austria-based Red Bull energy drink founder Dietrich Mateschitz, has struggled in its first year in the Nextel Cup Series, with both its cars outside the top 35 in owner points and therefore not guaranteed starting spots in races. Red Bull Racing must concentrate nearly all efforts on qualifying, while maintaining a strong emphasis on building a solid foundation for a successful and enduring organization for the future, the team said in a statement issued Monday. Given the teams struggles in 2007, Red Bull has been rumored to be changing to Chevrolets next season, a scenario Gaunt and Toyotas Andy Graves denied last weekend at Pocono Raceway.(SPEEDtv.com)(8-7-2007)

Four drivers battle the heat at Lowe’s Motor Speedway tire test: With late-afternoon temperatures approaching 100° and track temperatures exceeding 140°, Nextel Cup Series drivers #12-Ryan Newman, #1-Martin Truex Jr., #83-Brian Vickers and #6-David Ragan tested Goodyear tires Monday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in preparation for the Bank of America 500 on Saturday night, Oct. 13. Even though the four teams had an eye on 2008 as they tested NASCAR’s Car of Tomorrow, a portion of what they learn during the two-day session will apply to the current cars that will be used here this fall. The tire test is scheduled to continue through Tuesday afternoon with the same four drivers expected to once again battle the elements.(LMS PR), no speeds were released.(8-7-2007)

Ambrose will not run Cup race at Watkins Glen: Wood Brothers/JTG Racing has decided that the team will again focus their attention on the teams full-time #21 Cup entry [with Bill Elliott], putting on hold plans to run a second Cup [#47] entry for [Busch Series driver Marcos] Ambrose on the Watkins Glen road course. At the beginning of the season, Wood Brothers/JTG Racing announced its plans to enter Marcos Ambrose in both of the Nextel Cup road course races in 2007. Several circumstances have delayed Ambroses Cup debut and he will not be competing in Nextel Cup at Watkins Glen with Wood Brothers/JTG Racing this weekend, according to team co-owner, Tad Geschickter. We want to be totally prepared when we embark on Marcos Cup career, said Geschickter. We have no doubts that he will succeed at the top level of our sport. The combination of our #21 Cup car fighting to regain a guaranteed starting position in points and the unforeseen complexities of the new Car of Tomorrow introduction has forced us to rethink our earlier plans. Combine these factors with Marcos having a real opportunity to finish well inside the coveted top 10 in Busch Series points and we felt that stretching our resources to rush his Cup debut was the wrong thing to do at this time.(Wood Brothers/JTG Racing/BAM Media PR)(8-7-2007)

Haas Named Pioneer in Racing: Carl A. Haas, one of the most successful team owners and businessmen in motorsports history, has been chosen by the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association to receive its Pioneer In Racing Award. Haas has been inducted into the SCCA Hall of Fame. The All-America Team ceremony will honor 2007s top drivers from all forms of motorsports. Categories include stock cars, open-wheel, drag racing, road racing, short track, touring series and at-large categories. It is one of the few such dinners open to the public. Gerhart Remains Hospitalized: ARCA Series driver Bobby Gerhart remains hospitalized at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA following an on track incident at Pocono Raceway Saturday afternoon. His condition is listed as stable. Gerhart, of Lebanon, PA, was involved in a lap 56 incident during the 80 lap Pennsylvania 200 ARCA Series race. Gerhart was able to exit his #5 Chevy under his own power following the multi car incident, but was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital for further evaluation where he was kept overnight after being transported, alert and conscious. An official announcement is expected within the next 2-3 weeks.(Motorsports Soapbox)(8-6-2007)

UPDATE 2: JGR will jump from Chevrolet to the Toyota camp beginning in 2008, joining Michael Waltrip Racing, Bill Davis Racing and Team Red Bull on the list of teams running Toyota Camrys. Neither Busch nor JGR have made any official comment on the move, but Gibbs officials have already informed Hall of Fame Racing that they will not continue to provide the team with engines next season, prompting Hall Of Fame to contact Richard Childress Racing about a similar engine-supply deal for 2008.(Motorsports Soapbox)(8-6-2007)
UPDATE 3: Hall of Fame Racing officials have not been told by Joe Gibbs Racing that JGR will not provide the HOF with engines next season, nor have HOF officials contacted RCR.(8-6-2007)

Source: Kyle Busch reaches deal with Joe Gibbs Racing
Representatives from the Kyle Busch camp say the outgoing Hendrick Motorsports driver has chosen the team he will drive for in 2008, and all signs point to Joe Gibbs Racing.

Evernham completes partnership with Gillett

Evernham wants to get back to racing side of sport

Evernham: Flawed info led to 2007 problems
The revelation came shortly after the race two weeks ago at Chicagoland Speedway, an event where two Evernham Motorsports drivers finished deep in the field and another failed to qualify. In meetings over the ensuing days, Ray Evernham finally began to get a picture of why cars that had won six races and eight poles the season before seemed so woefully off the pace.

NASCAR’s newest owner is a sports fan at heart, but …
Every time Ray Evernham talks to his new business partner, he says with a laugh, it seems George Gillett is 30,000 feet in the air, jetting off to oversee another outpost of his far-flung empire. And what an empire it is — Gillett’s varied portfolio contains everything from an NHL franchise, an English Premier League soccer club, and a collection of Western ski resorts to 14 car dealerships and the second-largest meatpacking company in the world.

France: International Cup date not on radar right now
By adding a Busch Series race in Montreal to the Mexico City venue already on the schedule, NASCAR is continuing to dabble its toes in international waters. But diving into the deep end with a Nextel Cup race outside of the U.S. is not something NASCAR chairman Brian France expects to do anytime soon.

Kurt Busch (No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charge), Finished 1st

TAKE US THROUGH THE WIN – “It’s just great to be part of Penske Racing and to have the privilege to drive for this team and of course today, with such a great race car prepared by Pat Tryson (crew chief). Everybody has a hand in this car and the way Troy Raker has led us up to this point taking over for Roy McCauley, who took a leave of absence with his wife Amy. We wish her all the best in her struggles, her trials. She’s doing well. It’s always been in the team’s mind on what we’ve gone through this year internally, emotionally and so to have such a solid day today with leading laps, I am sure each one of the crew guys is thinking how good this feels as well as the obvious, the people here at Pocono Raceway were treated to a good race.

“It was very solidifying for me today to drive the Miller Lite Dodge (Charger) into victory lane. It was a great handling car. I couldn’t thank the team enough. I did the smallest part, because a lot of work goes on behind the scenes putting this race win together.”

FOOD CITY 250, NASCAR’S MOST POPULAR BUSCH EVENT, TO FEATURE
LINEUP THAT INCLUDES AT LEAST 10 NEXTEL CUP DRIVERS

BRISTOL, Tenn. (Monday, Aug. 6, 2007) – NASCAR’s most popular Busch Series race, the Food City 250, also hits a high note with Nextel Cup drivers with at least 10 expected to do double duty, competing in the Friday night event on Aug. 24 before taking part in the sold out Sharpie 500 on Saturday evening.

Defending race winner Matt Kenseth will go after his second consecutive Food City 250 title after outrunning the likes of Kevin Harvick and Kasey Kahne a year ago. Like Kenseth, who swept the night races a year ago by also winning his second straight Sharpie 500, Harvick and Kahne will be gunning for the Food City 250 trophy in front of more than 100,000 fans.

Others NEXTEL Cup stars who’ll be vying for the win are Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, who won the Food City 500 NEXTEL Cup event at BMS in March, Jeff Burton, J.J. Yeley, Clint Bowyer, Ryan Newman and Greg Biffle.

Harvick is tied with Morgan Shepherd for most Busch Series wins at The World’s Fastest Half-Mile with four. Harvick’s wins came in August of 2000, August of 2001, March of 2003 and April of 2004. Kenseth, who won in August 1999, March 2001 as well as last August could join Harvick and Shepherd at the top of the list with another win.

Ticket holders for the Food City 250 will get to enjoy a full day of on-track action prior to the 8 p.m. start of the race, including Cup and Busch practice and qualifying for both the Food City 250 and Sharpie 500. Qualifying for the Sharpie 500 is set for 3:30 that afternoon while qualifying for the Food City 250 is at 4:35 p.m.

Tickets are available for the Food City 250, starting at $45. Tickets may be purchased by contacting the BMS ticket office at (423) 989-6900 or by visiting www.bristoltix.com.

The Food City 250 will be preceded by the O’Reilly 200 Craftsman Series Truck race and the Food City 150 Hooters Pro Cup Series event on Wednesday, Aug. 23. Tickets for the doubleheader also are available for $30 with children 12 and under admitted free with a paying adult.

Raybestos Rookie News & Notes – Watkins Glen: Kyle Krisiloff was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in the August 4 NAPA Auto Parts 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (Montreal, Canada). Krisiloff scored a sixth-place finish, his second top-10 effort of the season, and took top rookie honors for the second time in 2007. David Ragan leads Ambrose by 19 points (198-179) in the Raybestos Rookie standings entering the August 11 Zippo 200 at The Glen at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International. Ragan is fifth in the Busch Series championship standings, best of any Raybestos Rookie. He is 46 points behind fourth-place Jason Leffler and leads sixth-place Bobby Hamilton Jr. by 88. Ambrose is eighth in the standings, 69 points behind seventh-place Stephen Leicht. Ambrose led the NAPA Auto Parts 200 twice for 37 laps, earning WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race honors for the second time this season. Lally returns to the #47 at Watkins Glen: Andy Lally will return to the #47 Clorox Ford for Saturday’s Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International. Lally said the different between his Porsche GT sports car and a 3,400-pound stock car was dramatic. And yet, he said the adjustment was made easy by the team’s preparation. Lally said the Wood Brothers/JTG Racing-prepared racer consistently was one of the fastest cars in the first Busch Series race in Canada. Unfortunately transmission problems relegated Lally to a 29th place finish.(Wood Bros/JTG Racing PR)(8-6-2007)

Labonte back behind the wheel at The Glen: Bobby Labonte will make his 12th Busch Series start of the 2007 season for Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) this weekend at Watkins Glen International. Carpentier to run Phoenix? possibly The Glen? After racing to second place from pole position in his NASCAR debut, Canadian Patrick Carpentier may have driven his way to a full-time Busch Series ride in 2008. Minutes after the end of NAPA Auto Parts 200 at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve on Saturday, team owner Armando Fitz started making calls to get the native of La Salle, Que., back in the #22 Dodge for this weekend’s Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen in Upper New York State. “We already have a driver committed for Watkins Glen, but if I can put something together for a second car, I’ll put the other driver in that and keep Patrick in the #22,” Fitz said. “I just have to see if I can make it work. Although Carpentier’s chances of racing this weekend will depend on sponsorship, he will definitely be back in the Fitz car when the Busch Series heads to an oval this year, probably at the Phoenix International Raceway in early November. While many things must still be worked out, Fitz would like to see Carpentier driving for him next year, provided he runs well on an oval Carpentier has experience on the Phoenix flat track in both Champ Car and the IRL, which would help give him a leg up in his NASCAR oval debut. The 35-year-old driver gave the Fitz team its first Busch pole position since it began in 2001 and its second top-five finish this season.( The Globe and Mail, Canada)(8-6-2007)

Truck Series to Canada someday? Cup may be a long way off, there’s talk of a Craftsman Truck Series race in Calgary, possibly tied to the city’s Stampede, and rumours of a NASCAR event in the Toronto area, perhaps spearheaded by Molson. “We look at a market like Ontario and it’s the fifth largest in North America and aside from being a great opportunity, how do you not look at it?” said NASCAR’s international director, Robbie Weiss. “A long-term strategy will take time, but let’s see where this goes. But I think we will continue to look at ways to bring the sport closer to fans across the country.”(Globe and Mail, Canada)(8-6-2007)

Gale to run ARCA event at Nashville: Cale Gale will drive the #33-Chevy for Kevin Harvick Inc. in four ARCA races this season to give him a total of 16 events, including this weekend’s race, the Toyota ARCA 150 at the Nashville Superspeedway. The last time Gale ran in the ARCA race at Nashville he turned in a second place finish. Gale will be back in the #2-Camping World Chevy for the O’Reilly 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway.(KHI PR)(8-6-2007)

Mom’s going Over-the-Wall for her son in Nashville: JC Stout’s #91 Craftsman Truck Series team will be without their rear tire carrier, Joe Szwaczkowski, Sr., for the August 11th Toyota Tundra 200 at Nashville Super Speedway due to emergency surgery performed Saturday. Intent on going over the wall in his place will be his sister Patricia “Tree” Stout, who also happens to be the #91 driver’s mother. Mrs. Stout volunteered to fill the position. She wasted no time in preparing for her new role during the team’s pit practice today. Patricia, commonly known as “Tree”, has always been very supportive of her son’s dreams and career. Normally she’s the team’s mom away from home who makes sure the team is well fed and hydrated. “I’ll still make sure everyone has what they need this weekend. “There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for my son and this team. I’m no different than any other mother in that regard.”(JC Stout PR)(8-6-2007)

Determined on going over the wall in his place will be his sister, Patricia “Tree” Stout . In addition to being a dedicated sibling willing to step in for her ailing brother, Patricia Stout just happens to be the driver’s mother. You read that right. Stout’s Mom will be an over-the-wall crew member as a rear tire carrier in Nashville.
