New Screen Saver Available of Chevy R07 Race Engine: Race fans who love their computers and their cars now have access to a highly-detailed screen saver that shows the inner workings of the new GM Racing Chevrolet R07 racing engine. The screen saver shows engine views from all angles as the R07 is pieced together before their eyes – from the internal pistons to the last spark plug wire, as virtually every nut and bolt is seen going into place to complete the engine. Earlier this season, for the first time since 1955, Team Chevy introduced the all-new small-block V-8 engine in the top tier of stock car racing, making the R07 the first purpose-built engine designed and developed by GM Racing specifically for NASCAR Nextel Cup competition. The screen saver is an excellent way for fans to view production of the engine from the engineers’ perspective as they directed the development of the computer animation. Much of NASCAR got started in NE Georgia
By Phil Hudgins, CNI Senior Editor
Everybody knows about NASCAR, even those of you who aren’t fans of racing. But do you know how it all got started?
Well, much of it started right here in Northeast Georgia – to be specific, in Dawsonville, which has been called the “former moonshining capital of Appalachia.” And it was Dawsonville, where moonshiners tried to outrun and outsmart the law every night of the week, that “produced the nation’s first and best stock car racers Š,” says Neal Thompson in his book, “Driving with the Devil.”
Some of the people who knew those first and best racers will be at the Northeast Georgia History Center in Gainesville from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, to talk about those early years of racing.
The next forum, on Aug. 14, will feature the later years of NASCAR.
Moderating the forums will be Capt. Herb Emory, who gives traffic reports on WSB radio and hosts his own shows on NASCAR. Other guests scheduled to attend include Raymond Parks, a Dawsonville native who owned three winning cars during the early days; Jimmy Mosteller, who announced auto races for years; Charles Mincey, a former driver; David Sosebee, son of well-known driver Gober Sosebee of Dawsonville and a former driver himself; Dan Elliott, who served as crew chief and on the pit crew for his brother, driver Bill Elliott; and Gordon Pirkle, who has promoted racing in his native Dawson County for decades.
Pirkle and Sosebee have agreed to display one of the winning stock cars at the center for several weeks.
“These forums will be like no others ever held at the history center,” said Phil Hudgins, who chairs the forums committee. “Ed Parks of Gainesville has been tremendously helpful in lining up folks to talk about the days of moonshining and racing. You don’t want to miss what they’ll have to say.”
The history forums are free to members of the center and $3 for nonmembers. The center is located at 322 Academy St. in Gainesville The phone number is 770-297-5900.

Penalties Handed Down To No. 5 and No. 70 Teams
NASCAR has issued penalties and fines to the No. 5 and No. 70 teams that compete in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series, as a result of rule infractions found this past weekend at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, N.H. — Both cars – the No. 5 Chevrolet driven by Kyle Busch and the No. 70 Chevrolet driven by Johnny Sauter – were found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20-12.8.1B, COT Technical Bulletin #3, dated 4/10/07 (failed to meet the minimum front car heights) of the 2007 NASCAR rule book. The violations were found during post-race inspection last Sunday. As a result, Kyle Busch and Sauter have each been penalized 25 driver championship points. Their respective crew chiefs – Alan Gustafson and Robert “Bootie” Barker – have each been fined $25,000 and placed on probation until Sept. 19. In addition, Rick Hendrick, owner of the No. 5, has been penalized 25 car owner championship points as has Joe Custer, the owner of the No. 70.
Daytona Goodyear Tire Notes
Both the NASCAR Nextel Cup and Busch Series will run the same tire codes at Daytona this weekend — teams in these two series also ran this same combination of left- and right-side tires at the season-opening weekend at Daytona in February — this left-side code (D-4000) first ran at Daytona in February 2006, while this right-side code debuted at Talladega in April 2006 — as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Daytona — air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
Foyt Makes First Attempt This Year
Larry Foyt will attempt to compete in both the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway with BAM Racing as well as the Busch Series race with Mac Hill Motorsports. Firehouse Subs, founded in Jacksonville, Fla. by former firefighting brothers Robin and Chris Sorensen, will serve as an associate sponsor on both cars. Although Foyt has not competed in NASCAR racing this season, he has accumulated many hours on the track testing at superspeedways in support of Dodge Motorsports. BAM Racing will unload chassis # 33 in Daytona. This is the same car that qualified on time for the October race at Talladega Superspeedway in 2006.
Rudy Giuliani Pepsi 400 Honorary Race Official
Republican Presidential Candidate Rudy Giuliani will serve as an Honorary Race Official for Saturday’s Pepsi 400 at historic Daytona International Speedway. As Honorary Race Official, Mayor Giuliani will lead the 43-car field riding in an official event vehicle. “We’re honored to have Mayor Giuliani spend a portion of his July 4th holiday with us,” said Speedway President Robin Braig. “We look forward to hosting him along with thousands of race fans for an exciting and memorable evening at the “World Center of Racing’”.
Evernham Makes Director Change
Evernham Motorsports announced today that Josh Browne has elected to resign from his team director duties and return to the organization’s engineering department effective immediately. Longtime Evernham Motorsports employee Scott McDougall, former team director of the No. 98 Evernham Motorsports Truck/ARCA team, will take over as team director of the No. 19 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge on an interim basis

NASCAR will take both of the cars back to the R&D Center in Concord, NC to test them further to see if the problem is the result of something that happened on the track or not. If any penalties are assessed, they are likely to be announced on Tuesday.(7-1-2007)

McGlynn Racing Closing: Derrikecope.com reports: Unfortunately McGlynn Motorsports will be closing and auctioning off their assets at Sentman Auctions in North Carolina in the middle of July. Derrike Cope commented, “Certainly we showed that we could make races with minimal sponsorship. We just could not find people or companies that had the means to sponsor us.”(DerrikeCope.com)(7-4-2007)
Furniture Row Racing looking for sponsor, to form 2nd team: Furniture Row Racing, #78 in the Nextel Cup Series, has announced plans to seek additional sponsorship. Furniture Row Companies, based out of Denver, Colorado, owns and exclusively sponsors Furniture Row Racing. The organization currently operates a full-time, stand-alone Cup team with driver and motor sport personality Kenny Wallace behind the wheel. Furniture Row Racing is actively seeking sponsorship to fund the #78 team with a new sponsor. The Furniture Row Racing sponsorship will be used to form a second team [rumored to be driven by Sterling Marlin in 2008]. Furniture Row Racing is confident that a second team will provide the additional resources required to continue to grow and develop a competitive program. The benefits of running a second team, even in a part-time capacity, are deemed exceptionally valuable by the organization. Due to Wallace’s widespread popularity, a new sponsor could garner valuable brand exposure both on and off the track.(Businesswire.com)(7-4-2007)
SAFER Barrier designer honored in DC: Dean Sicking, the man responsible for the development of the SAFER Barrier that is used now at all major speedways in America, is headed to the White House. It’s estimated that over 150 lives are saved each year by technological advances Sicking helped implement on U.S. highways.(ESPN.com)(7-4-2007)

France vows to maintain the integrity of crew chief penalties; Drivers could be suspended: NASCAR plans to address the issue of suspended crew chiefs continuing to do their jobs from locations at the track but outside of the garage. Crew chief Tony Eury Jr., for example, reportedly worked with Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s team last weekend from a motorcoach parked on a hill outside New Hampshire International Speedway as he completed a six-week suspension. NASCAR chairman Brian France said that insults the integrity of the penalty. “We just had a meeting about that,” France said during a Tuesday afternoon conference call. “We will be, if that all is accurate, addressing that shortly.” France did not expand on what may be done. A crackdown could have an immediate impact on plans for the Hendrick Motorsports teams of Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson this weekend at Daytona. Crew chiefs Steve Letarte (Gordon) and Chad Knaus (Johnson) are in the second week of a six-week suspension that began after NASCAR ruled their cars failed initial inspection at the road course in Sonoma, Calif. France did say that NASCAR is willing to suspend drivers if it has to. “We’d like not to get to [suspending drivers],” he said. “We’d like to make the deterrent, a portion of the penalty, significant enough that that isn’t necessary for us to do. But are we willing to go there? Of course we would. We have in the past and we will in the future. We’re not hoping to do that. That’s sort of a death penalty.” Overall, France is satisfied that NASCAR is doing everything it can to discourage cheating, particularly when it comes to the Car of Tomorrow. “We feel very strongly that we’re going to be very, very tough on people that test us with the Car of Tomorrow,” France said. “The whole premise is built around not being able to do much fudging with the car.” While France said NASCAR will continue to escalate penalties for COT violations, he said they will not be customized to impact teams differently, based on the number of points they have. Gordon’s and Johnson’s teams could better afford a 100-point hit than some others. “The teams that are winning, despite what we may fine them, they are just good teams,” France said. “They’re going to win when they race with the same rules package everybody else has. They get through any kind of adversity to a point. … We can’t just customize the penalty based on the circumstance. Meaning, the [Gordon] car that has compiled a bunch of points, we can’t just say that is going to be 200 instead of 100 because he has a big lead. But we can find the right penalties.”(ESPN.com)(7-3-2007)

SUPERBIRDS, AERO CAR REUNION ANNOUNCED AS PART OF MILWAUKEE MILE GOVERNOR’S CUP WEEKEND
Champion Driver Ramo Stott Honorary Grand Marshal
MIILWAUKEE (July 3, 2007) – The Milwaukee Mile is the world’s oldest active speedway, with over a century of auto racing heritage. Extraordinary winged cars such as Dodge Daytonas and Plymouth Superbirds, along with the sleek Ford Torino Talladegas were some of the factory-backed winged wonders of the late 1960’s and early 70’s that dominated national championship stock car racing.
Between 1970 and 1972, more races including these unique racecars were run at The Milwaukee Mile than at any other speedway holding USAC, ARCA or NASCAR-sanctioned auto races.
History will come alive at The Milwaukee Mile, when the Aero Cars reunite on the speedway’s traditional Governor’s Cup racing weekend August 25 and 26, for a one time reunion hosted by the Daytona-Superbird Auto Club.
In addition to dozens of street legal Daytonas, Torinos and Superbirds, several historic race cars are scheduled to appear at the reunion. Among them are the #71 K&K Insurance Dodge Daytona originally driven by Bobby Isaac, the 1970 ARCA Championship winning Superbird driven by Ramo Stott, and the 1969 Ford Torino driven by Benny Parsons in his 1969 championship season.
Back in the day, big-block muscle cars ruled the highways and the racetracks. Chrysler and Ford both went to war to rule stock car racing’s super speedways. Chrysler fired first when in late-1969, they released the Dodge Daytona with it’s wedged front and large wing rising above the trunk. The following year, Plymouth released it’s sister version called the Superbird. Ford followed with the Torino Talladega, an aerodynamic upgrade of the Torino. The battle was on for racing supremacy.
In 1971, NASCAR banned the winged Dodge Daytona and Plymouth Superbird. USAC, a rival national series to NASCAR, embraced these winged warriors and for three years, these racecars dominated The Milwaukee Mile, Pocono Raceway and Michigan International Speedway.
Adding to this historic event will be the ARCA/USAC drivers reunion. Many drivers of yesterday plan on being at the event. Ramo Stott one of the legendary drivers from Keokuk, IA has been named grand marshal. Stott a former ARCA and USAC champion won three times at the historic one-mile oval and had 11 top-3 finishes. Stott also won ARCA’s biggest jewel-the 1970 Daytona ARCA 200 which was the first win for the Plymouth Superbird.
Any past licensed ARCA or USAC driver wishing to attend the reunion is to contact Milwaukee Mile Historian Steve Zautke at (414)588-3824 or via e-mail at szautke@wi.rr.com.
In just the last five years, over $23 million has been invested in facility improvements at America’s Legendary Oval. The Aero Car Reunion takes place at The Milwaukee Mile on the same weekend as four stock car divisions, with an expected 200 race cars in 500 miles of racing will race for the Governor’s Cup, featuring Wisconsin NASCAR superstar Matt Kenseth racing in a super late model race, and the Governor’s Cup 200 ARCA RE/MAX Series event.
Tickets are now on sale for The Mile’s Governor’s Cup weekend August 24-26 through The Milwaukee Mile’s ticket office at 7722 W. Greenfield Ave., by calling (414) 453-8277, or by visiting the speedway’s website, www.milwaukeemile.com.

Earnhardt Jr. To Replace Huffman in Driver’s Seat at Daytona
Navy Chevrolet to be piloted by JRM owner and two-time Busch Series champion
MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Dale Earnhardt Jr. will compete in Friday night’s Winn-Dixie 250 NASCAR Busch Series race at Daytona International Speedway, driving the No. 88 Navy “Accelerate Your Life” Chevrolet for his personally-owned team, JR Motorsports. He replaces Shane Huffman, who took over driving duties last August and compiled six top-10s and a pair of top fives in 28 races.
“Upon a midseason evaluation of the performance of this race team, we decided we needed to make a change, and right now we have a window to do that,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “Because of the short notice, I am going to drive the Navy car Friday night at Daytona. It’s a big race for us. We are carrying a special Navy SEALs paint scheme on the car, so we want to make sure we give it a good run for the Navy and all our sponsors and employees.”
Earnhardt Jr. said he does not intend to drive the car beyond this weekend, although a new full-time driver has yet to be determined. This weekend’s interim role will give Earnhardt Jr. the opportunity to compete in equipment solely his own for the first time. He is the defending race winner of the Winn-Dixie 250, as he led 88 of 103 laps en route to a dominating victory in a Dale Earnhardt Inc.-prepared Chevrolet last year.
“I have always wanted to drive my own car, but I’m doing this to give us time to evaluate our options and see who we want to put in the car for the rest of the season,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “I will get with my people at JR Motorsports, and hopefully we will have a new driver named in the very near future.”
JR Motorsports has fielded the No. 88 Busch Series entry full time since 2006. In a temporary role much like the one Earnhardt Jr. is inheriting, Robby Gordon earned the team’s best finish of third at Michigan International Speedway on Aug. 19, 2006. In 18 races this season, the Navy team has one top-five finish and four top 10s. Huffman is currently 13th in the NASCAR Busch Series point standings.
Earnhardt Jr. is a two-time champion in the NASCAR Busch Series, earning back-to-back titles in 1998 and 1999. He has 22 total victories in the Busch Series, which ties him with Sam Ard and Tommy Ellis for seventh on the all-time wins list. Five of his Busch victories have come at the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway.

NASCAR CANADIAN TIRE SERIES presented by Sirius Satellite Radio
POST-RACE NOTEBOOK – BARRIE SPEEDWAY
MOPAR 300, JULY 1
THIRD TIME IS A CHARM: In the third NASCAR Canadian Tire Series event, D.J. Kennington (No. 17 Castrol Dodge) picked up his first win. He battled Don Thomson Jr. (No. 4 Home Hardware Chevrolet) for nearly 100 laps before prevailing. The victory just may be late in coming in Kennington’s mind. He had a fast car in the season opener at Cayuga Speedway Park and won the Bud Pole in that event, but a broken right rear trailing arm defused all opportunities that evening.
DODGE IN VICTORY LANE: In three NASCAR Canadian Tire Series events, three different manufacturers have won. This time, Dodge collected the honors in the form of Kennington. The Chevy of Thomson and the Ford of Andrew Ranger (No. 27 Wal-Mart/Tide Ford Fusion) won the first two events. In the Mopar 300, Dodge took six of the top 10 positions along with a pair of Fords and Chevys. Thomson was the top-finishing Chevy while Kerry Micks (No. 02 Beyond Digital Imaging Ford Taurus) led the way for the Ford troops.
HOMETOWNERS FARE WELL: Three drivers who finished in the top 10 claim Barrie Speedway was their home track. Mark Dilley (No. 9 Dodge/Wild Wing Dodge Avenger), one time owner of the race facility, finished runner-up to Kennington. John Gaunt (No. 12 Centennial Chrysler Dodge) finished seventh and is a standout Late Model performer at Barrie. Joey McColm (No. 50 ATTO Dodge) continues to impress with his second eighth-place effort of the season.
MOBIL 1 OIL “COMMAND PERFORMANCE OF THE RACE” AWARD: In addition to picking up his first win in the Canadian Tire Series and all that goes with it, Kennington also collects $1,500 from Mobil 1 as a reward for his effort.
MOPAR FAST FIVE: A newly introduced program in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series is the Mopar Fast Five. This program awards the top-five finishing Dodges in the race. In the Mopar 300, Kennington was the top finishing Dodge with his victorious effort and for that he was awarded $2,000 CAD. Dilley’s second-place effort was rewarded with $1,250. Ron Beauchamp Jr. (No. 60 Mopar/Mobil 1 Dodge) was the third-highest finishing Dodge which earned him $1,000. The fourth and fifth-place Dodges were those of Gaunt ($500) and McColm ($250).
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY: Scott Steckly (No. 22 Erb Group Dodge Charger) came to Barrie with the idea of improving his season after 12th and 20th-place finishes in the first two events of the season. He was well on his way when he qualified fifth for the Mopar 300. Things were looking even better in the early portions of the race in which he was right there with the leaders and had even worked his way to second place. Unfortunately, though, he lost his motor just beyond the halfway point of the race and was forced to retire the car resulting in a 19th-place finish.
HEADING WEST: Many Canadian Tire Series teams will spend the next week packing up haulers readying for a westward migration. Next up for the series will be the British Columbia Dodge Dealers Dodge Avenger 300 on July 14-15 at Sun Valley Speedway in Vernon, B.C. which will be followed by the road course event as part of the big Grand Prix Edmonton weekend in Alberta.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: For anyone unable to be on hand last Sunday at Barrie Speedway, TSN will air coverage of the race on Saturday, July 14 at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Inside Track RCA Winner J.R. Fitzpatrick Honoured
2006 CASCAR Champion pleased with selection as Stock Car Racer of the Year
TORONTO, ON – As the dust settled after the 2006 Inside Track Readers’ Choice Awards, presented by Castrol results were revealed in mid-June, the category winners are still reacting to the honour of being selected by Canada’s racing fans as the best in their chosen disciplines. John Ryan (J.R.) Fitzpatrick is one of the younger category winners this year as the then 18-year-old driver from Ayr, ON put on a clinic during the 2006 CASCAR Super Series season. Driving for Fitzpatrick Motorsports and teamed with five-time CASCAR Champion – and previous ITMN RCA Stock Car Driver of the Year – Don Thomson Jr., Fitzpatrick was up against a host of serious competitors. J.R. won his first career CASCAR Super Series race on the Canada Day weekend at Barrie Speedway, en route to earning the overall championship, which he clinched in the season finale at Kawartha Speedway, in September, 2006. Other highlights for J.R. Fitzpatrick on the 11-race 2006 schedule include securing two poles; posting fastest lap of the race on three occasions; and scoring nine top-five finishes. He took the points lead when he won Round #3 at Barrie on Canada Day and never relinquished it. Inside Track readers were vocal in their support of Fitzpatrick as the 2006 Stock Car Racer of the Year, and the teenager was very appreciative for the vote of confidence. “That’s pretty cool,” Fitzpatrick said. “I’ve never gotten anything like that before. I’m happy to accept the honour on behalf of my team and crew who worked so hard to make this possible.” Fitzpatrick, now 19, is carrying his success through to the inaugural NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season, finishing 13th in the season opener at Cayuga, but rebounding to a runner-up finish at Mosport International Raceway in June. Inside Track Motorsport News is Canada’s top racing magazine, and the Readers’ Choice Awards are a key component of the magazine’s commitment to shine a bright light on this country’s current and future stars. The program is supported by title sponsor Castrol Canada, and the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame has incorporated several Readers’ Choice Award winners into their induction celebrations. Previous Overall Canadian Racer of the Year winners include former CASCAR driver Steve Robblee (2002) and former Champ Car champion Paul Tracy (2003).
