Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Race Highest-Rated Sporting Event on Television (last weekend): The NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway was the highest-rated televised sporting event last weekend nationwide. The event earned a 4.7 rating on TNT, with the next closest sporting event being a Major League Baseball game on FOX (2.8). The pre-race show on TNT netted a 2.7 rating, and NASCAR on TNT Live (prior to pre-race) garnered a 1.8 rating. Moreover, it was the highest-rated NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race broadcast on TNT this year, and the 4.7 rating was also better than the average rating for a NEXTEL Cup race that aired on TNT during the 2006 season (4.5). Kenseth Wins At Madison
Continuing to add to his stellar list of accomplishments, Matt Kenseth drove to victory Tuesday night at the Madison International Speedway in dominating fashion in the First Supply All-Star Challenge presented by Capitol City Harley-Davidson to notch his first win in the annual late model special. “Im just glad I didn’t have to race against any other Pathfinder Chassis, ” Kenseth commented alluding to his potent ride that led 78 laps of the 100-lap event. “From the first lap on the race track, I knew we had a great car, ” Kenseth continued, “It turned so great in the middle it was just fun to drive.” Starting from the inside of the second row, Kenseth followed early leader Steve Carlson for the opening 21 laps before seizing an opportunity to take command of the race with an outside move exiting turn two on lap 22.

Sprint’s new ad campaign lacks Nextel: Something is missing in a new advertising campaign being rolled out to U.S. consumers by wireless communications provider Sprint — Nextel. After what observers called a disastrous marketing campaign following its 2005 merger with Nextel, executives are trying to reinvent the Reston, Va., company’s image with the new tagline — “Sprint ahead” — that omits Nextel, The Washington Post reported Tuesday. Sprint also eased Nextel from sponsorship of the main NASCAR racing series. Starting next year, the Nextel Cup becomes the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Television commercials, online ads, billboards and movie theater ads will debut Sunday. Besides trying to improve its network’s reputation, Sprint is trying to hold off competition from AT&T and Verizon Wireless — which benefited from Sprint’s loss of customers, in part because of Nextel’s network problems.(UPI)

Penske may soon feature a brother act: Roger Penske may be considering adding Kyle Busch to the Penske Racing South NASCAR operation, which includes older brother Kurt Busch. “Penske would be stupid not to look at Kyle, so that talk is under way,” Kurt Busch said during a national teleconference. But, he added, Kyle is “talking with all the other race teams out there such as Ginn Motorsports, Yates. I’m sure he’s talked with Gibbs. “I would say he’s talked with 99 percent of the garages, and that 1 percent (he hasn’t talked to) is probably Roush Racing.” Kyle Busch is to return to The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway next week and compete in the annual “Night of Fire” racing card Tuesday night.(Las Vegas Sun), been told Kyle Busch has met this week with Evernham Motorsports and Chip Ganassi Racing.(6-29-2007)

Petty comments about slip of cuss word: TNT’s Kyle Petty raced Sunday in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 even as he served an on-air analyst. When he got in an accident on the first lap that also involved Matt Kenseth and Marc Goossens, viewers saw a replay in which the driver/analyst seemed to yell out an expletive � although TNT, during the race, said it wasn’t sure it came from Petty rather than from mikes in other drivers’ cars. But Petty wants it clear it was his profanity: “I’m sorry it got as far as everyone’s living room. But when an incident happens that early in the race and it’s unexpected, what I said pretty much described it.”(USA Today)(6-29-2007)
Career start #200 at NHIS for Johnson: Sunday will mark #48-Jimmie Johnson’s 200th start in Nextel Cup racing. Johnson’s first race was at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on Oct. 7, 2001. He started 15th and finished 39th. The wind tunnel will be the only one of its kind in the world available for rent by racing teams and manufacturers. Though he still is “not happy” about being pulled for Nextel Cup star Denny Hamlin during last Saturday’s Busch Series race at Milwaukee, Tampa’s Aric Almirola said Wednesday he isn’t frustrated at Joe Gibbs Racing and has no plans to leave the team. He said there is no truth to a rumor that appeared on ESPN-owned Web site Jayski.com saying he is headed to Ginn Racing next year and will race the #01 Chevrolet full time in Nextel Cup in 2009. “I’m under contract at JGR,” Almirola, 23, said on a national conference call. “I have a long history with them. I’ve been there since I was 18 years old. I started racing late models with them, and they’ve become like family to me. I see our relationship growing.” Almirola is scheduled to run six more Busch races, including the July 6 event at Daytona, and he said one race may be added. He is competing in the Craftsman Truck Series race this weekend at Memphis and will enter a couple of Nextel Cup Car of Tomorrow races this year with JGR’s research and development team. Q SCORE RATES MARTIN THIRD MOST POPULAR DRIVER IN NASCAR
Martin’s part time schedule does not slow down driver’s popularity
Mooresville, N.C. (June 28, 2007) – Mark Martin is the third most popular driver in NASCAR, according the 2007 Q Score Ratings. Martin ranks behind only Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon in the rating system conducted by N.Y. research firm Marketing Solutions. According to the firm, hundreds of millions in advertising decisions are based each year on the ratings. The survey is mailed each year to 2,000 people who identify themselves as fans of at least one sport.
Martin’s score is made that much more impressive by his ‘part-time’ driving status in 2007.
“I don’t pay much attention to that kind of stuff,” said Martin. “But it is nice to know that you have fans out there that support you like mine do and that’s what it all boils down to.”
“Coming into the year, I didn’t know what the interest would be like,” added Martin. “I was with a new team and only driving a part-time schedule, but we’ve found the interest to be really awesome and I think we are proving that you can make this type of scenario work for our team and our sponsors.
“I think it says a lot about the type of fans that I have and the type of organization Ginn Racing is to be able to come into this thing and be so successful right off the bat.”

Martin’s score of 22 ties with him with Danica Patrick as the third most popular driver in all of Motorsports, and is just behind Gordon (23) and Earnhardt Jr. (28). Michael Jordon topped the list with a score of 55.
Martin will take this weekend’s race at Loudon off, before returning to action next weekend at Daytona International Speedway for the Pepsi 400. He will then race in the next three races at Chicagoland, Indianapolis and Pocono before sitting out Watkins Glen as part of his limited schedule in 2007.

Wanke & #7 Team Part Ways?: UPDATE 2: Hearing that Fred Wanke and the #7 Phoenix Racing team have parted ways. Supposedly Marc Reno will fill in as crew chief for Mike Wallace until they find a replacement.(4-12-2007)

Kerry Earnhardt to Run Daytona Busch Race: Jeff Spraker Racing Enterprises will field an entry for Kerry Earnhardt at Daytona International Speedway. Earnhardt will drive Spraker’s #63. The car, a Chevy, will come from the Jeff Spraker Racing Enterprises stable with the engine provided by Dale Earnhardt, Inc. Spraker who has been running a full Busch East Series schedule with Michelle Theriault will head the effort and is expected to take the role of crew chief for the double-header weekend. Almirola Comments on Being Pulled from Milwaukee Race: Disappointment, frustration and anger have given way to acceptance, understanding and even a little bit of humor for Aric Almirola in the days since his hollow first victory in the Busch Series. The 22-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing development driver started the AT&T 250 Saturday night at the Milwaukee Mile, only to be yanked after 59 laps once Nextel Cup regular Denny Hamlin arrived. “When he first asked me to get out, my first response was, ‘Are you kidding?’ ” Almirola said. “That’s when he got pretty emotional, and he was like, ‘No, man, I wish I was kidding you, but I’m not.’ ” Almirola spoke briefly with Rogers, and the team and said he was not upset with them but with the “crappy situation.” He then left the track to avoid doing or saying something he would regret. “I feel like I was a part of it [the win], but by no way, shape or form do I feel like that was my first victory,” Almirola said. “I feel like my first victory is still to come, and I’ll get that, and I’ll actually be in the car when it crosses the start-finish line.”(Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel)(6-28-2007)

Keselowski subbing for Musgrave: Brad Keselowski, the young racer from Rochester Hills, MI, will drive the #9-Team ASE/Germain Toyota in Saturday’s O’Reilly 200 at Memphis Motorsports Park. SPARTA KY (6-28-07) – More than 20 drivers made their way to Kentucky Speedway on Thursday to participate in a full day ARCA RE/MAX Series open test session designed to serve as a warm-up for the Friday, July 13 WLWT Channel 5-150 at 1.5-mile superspeedway.
Unofficially, Pete Shepherd, in a No. 99 Roush Fenway Racing Ford, posted the quickest time and speed (30.59 seconds/176.528 mph). Shepherd, a native of Brampton, Ontario, made his ARCA RE/MAX Series debut in 2006, finishing a career best fourth in his first series attempt at Gateway Int’l Raceway.
