DAYTONA USA is now “Daytona 500 Experience” - New logo, new merchandise accompany name change: For the past 11 years, DAYTONA USA, “The Official Attraction of NASCAR,” has been delivering magical motorsports memories to both hard-core race fans and casual observers through hands-on activities, challenging thrills and one-of-a-kind sights. This year, the attraction continues to offer fans the thrills of racing at “The World Center of Racing.” However, in an effort to align “The Official Attraction of NASCAR” with NASCAR’s biggest, richest and most prestigious race — the Daytona 500 — DAYTONA USA will be renamed the Daytona 500 Experience beginning July 1, 2007. A new logo will accompany the name change as well as a new website address. Fans can see the new logo at www.Daytona500Experience.com.
Dale Jr. on if DEI would be a different place if Dale Sr. was still alive: Caller - “I want to know your opinion on whether or not you think DEI would be in the state it’s in right now if your dad were still around?” Dale Jr. - “I think absolutely not…I think we’d all be in a whole different scenario…I think the company would be a whole lot better off…Having him here physically would still be bringing a lot to the table as far as sponsorship, as far as personnel….There’s no telling about the success part of it…I know we’d still be successful because of the people that we had working there, but I know for a fact that if my dad was still alive I’d always want to drive for him….No question.” - Dale Jr.’s XM Satellite Radio Show, “Dale Jr. Unrestricted” broadcasts weekly on XM Channel 144 at 7:30pm ET

Martin Would Have Been Docked 100 Points
I’ve been asked the question many times this week. “If Mark Martin had been driving the No. 24 Hendrick Chevrolet this past week at Infineon Raceway, would he have been been penalized the 100 NASCAR Nextel Cup driver’s points instead of Jeff Gordon?” As a contingency plan, Gordon did have Martin standing by to drive the car just in case his baby was born on the weekend. Herb Brannam, NASCAR communication manager said “Yes, he would’ve been penalized the 100 points”.
Daytona 500 Nominated For Best Finish Of Year
Whether or not the 2007 Daytona 500 was the best finish in the near 50-year history of the race is a debate for the ages. But as far as it being the Best Finish of 2007, that will be decided by the voters in the 15th annual ESPYs. The finish of the 2007 Daytona 500, which Kevin Harvick nipped Mark Martin by .020 seconds, was among the nominations in the “Best Finish” category of the ESPYs, where ESPN celebrates the top moments, most emotional stories and the best performances from the past year in sports. Also nominated in this new ESPY category were: Curlin inching past Street Sense in The Preakness; Barton beating Winona State a steal and buzzer-beater to win the Division II men’s basketball championship 77-75; the Dodgers’ four straight home runs that tied the Sept. 18, 2006 game against the Padres followed by Nomar Garciaparra blast in the bottom of the 10th to complete the come-from the-behind-11-10 win; and Boise State’s 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.
Ray Evernham To Host New Show
Beginning in July, NASCAR team owner Ray Evernham will be the featured host of a new and unique racing program on ESPN2. Part of the ESPN2 Garage group of motorsports and automotive shows, Race Wizard with Ray Evernham will premiere at 11 a.m. ET Saturday, July 7. The innovative new show will provide racing fans an entertaining look at the intriguing technical aspects and little-known inner-workings of motorsports and racing. Race Wizard is created for and by NASCAR fans, who will go behind the scenes of the racing world through “person on the street” interviews with one of racing’s brightest minds and most successful team owners.

Sonoma TV Ratings: hard to compare the TV Ratings at Sonoma for the Nextel Cup race vs. 2006 as this season, the race was televised on TNT, a cable network and garnered a rating of 4.0 with 4,431,000 households and 6,520,000 viewers [on the Network TV Ratings this would had been around 20-22 best for the week]. Last season the race was televised on FOX with a 5.1 rating [no viewers numbers listed], but the rating is measured a little different from cable to network TV. The ratings at Sonoma were better then the week before at Michigan. The race was the third highest rated cable series by total households in the period 6/18/07-6/24/07, behind TNT’s The Closer and Disney’s Hannah Montana.(Zap2it.com)(6-28-2007)
Sylvania on the #15 hood at NHIS: #15-Paul Menard’s Menard’s Chevy will feature Sylvania as the hood sponsor. Sylvania, is based in Danvers, Massachusetts and has been a partner sponsor to the Menards Racing program since Menard joined Dale Earnhardt Inc. in 2004.(Co-Pilott Motorsports Marketing PR)(6-28-2007)
Pride of NASCAR continues: On Sunday, TNT’s Pride of NASCAR series continues with a feature on ‘Gentleman Ned Jarrett,’ a two-time NASCAR Champion with 239 career wins [50 in the Cup series]. TNT’s Bill Weber spent a day walking the links with Jarrett as he reminisced about his illustrious career over a round of golf. Topics discussed included Jarrett’s “early” retirement from racing at age 34 in 1966, his second career as a pioneering NASCAR broadcaster, his family (including 1999 Cup Champion son, Dale Jarrett) and his youth in rural North Carolina. Jarrett also recounted his most memorable moment in racing - calling the 1993 Daytona 500 which was won by his son.(TNT PR)(6-28-2007)
Stremme scheme at NHIS: For the second time this season, the Coors Wide Mouth Can paint scheme will run on the #40 Dodge of David Stremme. Earlier this season the paint scheme ran at Pocono where Stremme recorded a personal best finish of 23rd at the track. Stremme will participate in the Coors Light Annual Pub Tour Friday night from 7-9pm in and around the Concord, N.H. area in advance of Sunday’s New England 300. Stremme and guests from Capitol Distributors (the local Coors distributor) will hit four local area pubs so keep your eyes open for the Coors Light crew Friday night.(Ganassi Racing PR), see an image of the scheme on my #40 Team Schemes page.(6-28-2007) www.jayski.com/schemes/2007/40cup.htm
Dodge gives away new Avenger after first victory: Dodge made a promise to its drivers back in February that the first win in a Dodge Avenger would be rewarded with a new 2008 Dodge Avenger passenger car for the driver to donate to their favorite charity. Juan Pablo Montoya collected on that promise today with the first Dodge Avenger victory at Infineon Raceway. Not only did he drive his Dodge Avenger to victory lane, he gets to drive away with one, too.(Clear!Blue PR), no word on what charity, but with his wife Connie, Juan Pablo Montoya has a charity foundation called “Formula Smiles”. It is an organization dedicated to help children with no resources.(6-28-2007)
New Hampshire Rookie Notes: Raybestos Rookie Juan Pablo Montoya won the June 24 Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway. Montoyas first Nextel Cup win came in his 17th career start. His best previous finish was fifth at Atlanta earlier this year and he took Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the eighth time in 16 races this season. Montoya leads #6-David Ragan by 15 points (180-165) in the Raybestos Rookie standings entering the July 1 LENOX Industrial Tools 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway. Montoya led once for seven laps, the first time he has led a Nextel Cup race this season [and career]. He became the second Raybestos Rookie to lead in 19 races at Infineon Raceway (Scott Pruett led twice for 10 laps in 2000). Montoya became the first Raybestos Rookie to win at Infineon Raceway in 19 Nextel Cup Series races. The best previous finish was ninth, shared by Ryan Newman (2002) and Kenny Irwin (1998). A Raybestos Rookie has won at least one race in each of the past three consecutive seasons. Only two Raybestos Rookies have scored top-five finishes in 14 previous July races at New Hampshire: Ryan Newman (fifth in 2002) and Kyle Busch (fourth in 2005). The best start by a Raybestos Rookie at New Hampshire is third by Jeff Gordon in 1993.(Raybestos PR), see standings, more notes nad rookie history on my 2007 Rookies Page.(6-28-2007) www.jayski.com/stats/2007/roty2007.htm

Track, NASCAR heading to mediation
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky Speedway is heading to mediation later this week in its antitrust case against NASCAR.
Lawyers aren’t saying whether the two sides are any closer to a settlement that could land the northern Kentucky track a Nextel Cup race.
U-S Magistrate Judge Gregory Wehrman has set a settlement conference for Friday in Covington, Kentucky.
Cincinnati attorney Stan Chesley is representing the Sparta, Kentucky, speedway in the 400 (M) million antitrust lawsuit. Chesley says it’s hard to know how long the mediation proceedings will last or whether it would spark any movement in the negotiations.
NASCAR officials didn’t respond to requests for comment today.

Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS) announced Wednesday it is making crew changes to its No. 41 Wrigley’s and No. 42 Texaco/Havoline NASCAR Busch Series (NBS) teams. Crew chief Brad Parrott and his crew will move over to work on the No. 41 Dodge with drivers Reed Sorenson, David Stremme, Scott Pruett, Scott Lagasse Jr., and Bryan Clauson, while crew chief Brian Pattie and his team will now work with drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and Kevin Hamlin on the No. 42 Dodge effective this weekend at New Hampshire International Speedway (NHIS). “Since its inception, our Busch Series program has experienced some great accomplishments in a short period of time. We’ve had some highlights this year, as well, but both teams are lacking consistency,” said team managing director John Fernandez. “Our Busch program exists to develop our drivers, so we’re hoping this move will get the teams’ performance to where we think it should be right now and to prepare for the up-and-coming racers who will be in those cars later this year and seasons ahead.” The No. 41 team currently sits 27th in the Busch Series owner standings and has accumulated two poles, two top-five and three top-10 finishes, and the No. 42 team sits 12th in the owner standings with one win, one top-five and three top-10 finishes. (CGRwFS PR) (06-27-07)
Kelly Bires doesn’t mind his race-by-race schedule as the relief driver in the No. 47 Clorox Ford. As long as he’s needed, he will show up with helmet – and enthusiasm – in hand. Bires will continue his supporting role at this Saturday’s Camping World 200 at the New Hampshire International Speedway. He will drive in place of Jon Wood, who continues his recovery from an adverse reaction to prescribed medication. It will be Bires’ fourth appearance in the Busch Series for Wood Brothers/JTG Racing. While he continues to maintain his rookie status in the Craftsman Truck Series, Bires has proven to be a quick study in the Busch Series. He already has two Top-15 finishes, including a career-best seventh-place effort at the Kentucky Speedway. Until then, he’s happy to help out – even if it’s race-by-race. (WB/JTG PR) (06-27-07)
Tidbits entering New Hampshire: Carl Edwards’ points lead is 432 points higher than Kevin Harvick’s was after 17 races in 2006, but he has scored just 39 more points through 17 races in 2007 than Harvick did in 2006. Edwards could expand on that this weekend. He has finished second and first in his two Loudon starts. Scott Wimmer has competed in 11 races in 2007. In the first five races his average finish was 18.6 with only two top-10 finishes, in the last six it is 5.2, with all top-10 finishes. Milwaukee was Wimmer’s fourth consecutive top-five finish. Wimmer will also run New Hampshire. David Ragan leads the Raybestos Rookie of the Year standings, nine Top-15, four top-10 finishes.
Last weekend’s second-place finish at The Milwaukee Mile was Scott Wimmer’s season best behind the wheel of the No. 29 Holiday Inn Chevrolet and advanced the team 23 points in the NASCAR Busch Series owners’ championship point standings. The team sits second and is now just 188 markers behind Jack Roush’s No. 60 machine. This is the second straight week that the Richard Childress Racing team has advanced in the owners’ point standings. (RCR PR)

Mike Hillman statement regarding Musgrave suspension: Mike Hillman Sr., general manager of Germain Racing, says the team understands and supports NASCAR’s decision. The team will not appeal, and Musgrave will miss the race this weekend at Memphis Motorsports Park, where he will be replaced by Brad Keselowski. “We regret that the incident happened,” Hillman said. “The Team ASE crew has had some excellent races this season, and we know Ted Musgrave still has the fire it takes to win races for us. We look forward to having him back in the Team ASE Tundra in Kentucky.” (Scene Daily)(6-27-2007)
NASCAR suspends Musgrave one race: NASCAR announced today that Ted Musgrave, driver of the #9 Toyota in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, has been suspended from competition until July 3, penalized 50 championship driver points, fined $10,000 and placed on probation until Dec. 31 for a rule violation he committed during the race at the Milwaukee Mile on June 22. Musgrave was found to be in violation of Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing; hitting another competitor’s truck during a caution period) of the 2007 NASCAR rule book. In addition, Bob Germain, owner of the #9, has been penalized 50 championship truck owner points. The next race on the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule is at Memphis Motorsports Park on Saturday.(NASCAR PR)(6-27-2007)
Matthews picks up sponsor for Memphis: When Ryan Mathews signed to drive the #36 Toyota Tundra for Bill Davis Racing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, it may have come as a surprise to some. However, the 26-year-old Wisconsin native has already made his presence known in one of the world’s top racing series. Mathews is still looking for a permanent primary sponsor, but he does have a sponsor for this weekend’s Truck Series race in Memphis, Tenn. Logos representing the Lilly Company and Toyota Industrial Equipment will adorn the side of the #36 truck. The Lilly Company is the local authorized dealer for Toyota Industrial Equipment. It sells and services warehouse lift equipment, forklifts and other industrial equipment.(Bill Davis Racing PR)(6-27-2007)
Kevin Wood to make debut in the #21 truck in Memphis: Kevin Wood will make his debut in Saturday night’s O’Reilly 200 Craftsman Truck Series race at the Memphis Motorsports Park. Bires Still in for Wood: Kelly Bires doesn’t mind his race-by-race schedule as the relief driver in the #47 Clorox Ford. As long as he’s needed, he will show up with helmet – and enthusiasm – in hand. Bires will continue his supporting role at this Saturday’s Camping World 200 at New Hampshire International Speedway. He will drive in place of Jon Wood, who continues his recovery from an adverse reaction to prescribed medication. It will be Bires’ fourth appearance in the Busch Series for Wood Brothers/JTG Racing.(Wood Bros./JTG Racing PR)(6-27-2007)

The #50 truck will serve as the test truck, with a few different drivers slated to make starts for the remainder of the 2007 season. “We have a talented pool of young drivers at Roush Fenway Racing,” said team owner Jack Roush. “Peter Shepherd and Danny O’Quinn have been impressive, and T.J. Bell has shown great promise as well. We’re going to give these guys an opportunity to show what they can do, and we’ll make a decision as far as who we’re going to put in our trucks for 2008 based off of that.” Peter Shepherd made his first start of the 2007 season at Milwaukee last week, and is scheduled to race the #50 at Memphis Motorsports Park this weekend and Kentucky Speedway next month. Danny O’Quinn will make the first Craftsman Truck Series start of his career at O’Reilly Raceway Park in July. T.J. Bell will return to the seat of the #50 truck at Nashville, with additional races later in the season. Northern Tool + Equipment, primary sponsor of Roush Fenway Racing’s #99 Ford in the Craftsman Truck Series, will sponsor the #50 in selected upcoming races. The truck will carry a reversed paint scheme of Darnell’s #99 Ford truck. The complete schedule of drivers and their races will be released at a later date.(Roush Fenway Racing PR)(6-27-2007)

NASCAR Forces Musgrave to Sit Out Memphis
06-27-2007 | Tim Packman, TruckSeries.com
Keselowski Will Sub for Musgrave at Memphis - Ted Musgrave will not be driving the No. 9 Team ASE Toyota Tundra this weekend at Memphis Motorsports Park; but it’s not by choice. After getting into a wreck with Kelly Bires on lap 74 in Turn 2 at The Milwaukee Mile last Friday night, Musgrave took his battered Toyota and rammed alongside Bires stopped truck against the outside wall. Musgrave was black flagged, directed off the track and into the garage area. Bires was forced to register a DNF because of the damage. That black flag was just the beginning for Musgrave.

Skinner Closing In On Bud Pole Record - His Own
06-27-2007 | TruckSeries.com Report
Mike Skinner, driver of the No. 5 Toyota Tundra Toyota, is on a record-breaking pace to erase a mark the 1995 champion established in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series’ first season. Skinner broke his own qualifying mark at The Milwaukee Mile on June 22 to post his seventh Bud Pole in 11 races this season. Skinner is the single-season record holder with 10 poles over a 20-race schedule. The California native has 14 races to better that mark. The most recent pole was his 39th. Skinner had a pole winning bonanza in 2006, taking the No. 1 qualifying spot eight times.

3-Time ARCA RE/MAX Series Champion Tim Steele Retires
COOPERSVILLE MI (6-27-07) If there was ever a natural born race driver, it may be said that Tim Steele fitted into that category like a glove.
But for the three-time ARCA RE/MAX Series national driving champion, it just didn’t feel natural anymore.
“It took me nine and a half years to get there,” said Steele. “But the last time I was in a car, it just didn’t feel natural anymore. It seems like I’ve struggled with this decision forever; but I always told myself that if I ever got scared it was time to get out; or that if I ever felt like I had lost my God-given ability, it was time to get out.”
For Steele, 39, that time has come. The Coopersville, Michigan driver has officially announced his retirement from driving.
After a very successful career in the ARCA RE/MAX Series that produced championships in ’93, ’96 and ’97, and more superspeedway victories than any other driver in series history, Steele was on the verge of signing a contract to race fulltime in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. Then a crash at Atlanta Motor Speedway on November 5th, 1997 left him with a closed head injury and changed his world forever.
“I was 10 days away from signing a Winston Cup contract when I crashed; and we were going to run for the 1998 Cup Rookie of the Year. My dad and (Green Bay Packers quarterback) Brett Favre were purchasing the team from Bud Moore, and we had Nike and Sony lined up as sponsors.
“Looking back in ’98 when I was at the Mayo Clinic, I now know the doctors were right when they told me I should probably find a different career.
“I just wasn’t willing to accept that; it was like admitting defeat. Racing was my life; it’s how I earned my living, and the only job I ever had since I was 20. I didn’t know anything else, so it was so hard to walk away from my life. I had worked so hard to get where I had gotten. I just couldn’t give up on it now.”
Unfortunately, there would be ongoing, residual physical and personal issues that would plague Steele during his comeback phase of his career. Regardless, it’s worth noting that despite the ongoing struggles, Steele still managed 11 more ARCA RE/MAX Series victories after the accident.
From 1993 through 2006, Steele, driving his father Harold Steele’s HS Die entries, won 41 ARCA RE/MAX Series races in 146 attempts, which equates to victories in 28% of all the races he entered. Steele is still the all-time superspeedway winner with 24 victories, including nine at Pocono Raceway, which still tops the charts. Through it all, he earned 86 top-five finishes, 101 top-10s and led 5,423 laps in 93 races. That means that Steele led laps in 64% of every race he entered, a feat unmatched yet today. He also won 31 career pole awards.
ARCA President Ron Drager was witness to Steele’s ascension through the ARCA ranks from start to finish.
“Tim Steele, at his best, was as good a driver as there ever has been in the ARCA RE/MAX Series,” said Drager. “His statistics place him at or near the top of nearly every category in the 55-year history of our series, especially in superspeedway competition. While he has had to forgo what was at one time an exceptionally promising driving career, it’s great to see that he can continue to participate in the sport, and you can bet he’ll prove to be just as competitive as ever in his new role.”
His new role requires the transition from driver to owner.
“I’ve tried different things with my Dad, out at his ranch in South Dakota and with all the things he’s got going on while still racing my late model. But doing other work outside of racing didn’t always feel right either. I just didn’t live for it like I did racing.
“The day we crashed at Toledo testing our late model earlier this year, I was driving my bike home after the wreck and I came to the decision it was time to get out, and that was that. Johnny VanDoorn, a 19-year-old local driver from Coopersville, had just won at Berlin, so I put him in my late model. We went to Dixie and just cleaned up. He had three-quarters lap on the field when the final caution came out. I mean, they were racing like crazy for second, but not for the win. It reminded me of some of my days in ARCA.
“Anyway, that win really lit my fire again. I hadn’t felt that kind of desire since before the wreck in ’97. So now I’m back at it working on racecars 12, 14, 16 hours a day, and I’m loving every minute of it.
“Now I can take the energy I used to spend driving and begin developing the skills necessary to build relationships with sponsors. I can orchestrate from the owner’s seat rather than from the driver’s seat, and I’m really looking forward to it.”
VanDoorn is equally excited about the opportunity.
“Teaming up with Tim Steele and HS Motorsports will help out my career, no question about that,” VanDoorn said. “We’ve been at the top of the speed charts ever since we started working out of Tim’s shop and we are looking forward to more of that in the future. HS Motorsports has a long history of running up front and contending for wins and championships, which is what we plan on doing. With the experience Tim and his crew chief Chip Caputo provide, that will only speed up my learning curve.”
Steele added, “Having Johnny in our car will be fun to watch. When I decided to stop driving, I thought I’d miss it. But working with Johnny has been awesome. And seeing him run a car that looks like mine will be great. Hopefully, all the fans that I had along the way will remember that car and follow Johnny, ‘cause he has a bright future.”
The familiar red #16 will carry long time Steele sponsors: HS Die, Visi Cad/Cam, Tooling Software Technologies and Hometown Sunoco of Cutlerville Michigan. Also on board will be Magic Transportation who has backed VanDoorn since 2003.
Despite Steele’s newest opportunity in the late model world, his desire to return to ARCA RE/MAX Series competition is still at the forefront of his thoughts.
“I’ve got the name I have because of ARCA,” added Steele. “ARCA’s been very good to me over the years, and I’ve earned a d***-good living doing it, and I’ll do anything I can to support it. If you’re going to bad mouth the series, better not to do it around me. ARCA gave me the chance to get to the big time, but I got hurt. It just wasn’t meant to be as a driver, but maybe as an owner. I just really feel like I can go someplace with my decision I’ve made, and I’m looking forward to it.
“My dad always said, ‘you create your own luck; the harder you work, the luckier you get.’ Now I finally understand it’s true. And I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.”
Next stop for Steele and his newest protégé VanDoorn will be the CRA Super Series late model race at Angola Motor Speedway Saturday, June 30th.

DILLEY ENJOYS THE RACING LIFE
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 26, 2007) In the view of many, stock car racing has become a young man’s sport, but don’t tell that to Mark Dilley.
Dilley, 38, is in his 24th year of car racing and wouldn’t have it any other way. The lure of getting behind the wheel of a racecar almost always grips drivers early in life, and Dilley was no exception. But the desire to excel still flows through him.
“It’s what I do and all I really know,” said Dilley, who is racing in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio. “The competition is what drives me and I’m as busy now with racing as I’ve ever been.”
That is not to say, though, that he does not have his moments of doubt. The hours spent driving one of these cars cannot be equated to driving the family on a vacation. There are no CD players. No satellite radio with hundreds of programming options at the fingertips. No roomy leather seats. No climate control. In fact, the temperatures in these cars is often well above 40 degrees Celsius.
“Sure, there are times when I get a little sick of it toward the end of the season, but I miss it very, very soon after it’s done,” Dilley said. “It’s a bit of a ‘Catch-22’ situation, but I love it far more often than I don’t.”
Thoughts of a championship looms large for all race teams especially for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series in this, its first season. All drivers want to hold their index finger in the air with a huge sense of self-accomplishment. There may well be some measure of that inside Dilley, but it is not the overriding force.
“The championship is what we all are shooting for, and I would like to win this first NASCAR championship,” said Dilley. “But it is more of a way for me to give back to my crew, who work extremely hard on the car. It’s also a way to thank Dodge, my sponsor, and all of my supporters for their efforts. Those are the people that make this program the success that it is.”
Two of the Canadian Tire Series’ youngest drivers grabbed the lion’s share of the limelight at the last event held at Mosport International Raceway. Andrew Ranger, 20, along with J.R. Fitzpatrick, 19, started and ended the race in first and second, respectively. The role of mentor to the series’ younger competitors is also not lost on Dilley.
“Those two guys are very talented young drivers and they’re not the only ones. There are several good, young (drivers) in this series,” said Dilley. “It would be easy to be a little resentful of the attention they get, but they are the future of this sport not only in Canada, but worldwide. I think it’s every veteran driver’s duty to help them along in any way we can.”
While Dilley is willing to provide a helping hand or advice to younger drivers, and seemingly wants to win a championship for everyone but himself, his accomplishments early in the season can’t be ignored. He has logged a pair of top-10 finishes in his No. 9 Dodge-sponsored Avenger, including a runner-up finish in the inaugural NASCAR Canadian Tires Series event a Cayuga Speedway Park. Those two efforts rank him third in the championship point standings, just 20 points behind points leader Ranger.
Next up for the Canadian Tire Series is the Mopar 300 at Barrie (Ontario) Speedway, a track that Dilley knows quite well. He is a former owner of the 1/3-mile tri-oval and still runs the Barrie Speedway Driving Experience, a comprehensive program designed to give people the true thrill of short track racing.
As is the case for all short tracks, the key to winning at Barrie Speedway is patience according to Dilley, a Barrie resident. However, practicing what he preaches is sometimes difficult with the added pressure of the hometown crowd.
“It always seems that I give a little extra when it comes to racing there,” he said. “It paid off in 2005 by winning the (former CASCAR Super Series) race, but in the two visits there last year; we did not get the finishes we hoped for.”
A 1/3-mile track is a crowded place for 20 to 30 cars all aiming for the preferred line.
“Like the saying goes, you have to finish to win,” Dilley said. “And to finish, you need to race the track and keep the car as clean as possible.”
Ticket information for the Mopar 300 can be obtained by calling Barrie Speedway at (705) 487-0279 or by logging onto www.barriespeedway.com.
