Gordon Wins No. 79
Out of brakes, out of tires and almost out of gas, Jeff Gordon backed into a victory in the Pocono 500 on Sunday. Rain hated the race just past half-way at lap 106. Before the race was called, Ryan Newman was closing fast on Gordon but the red flag made it moot. Gordon’s crew chief Steve Letarte made the call that put Gordon out of sync with most of the field and it played right into their hands. On a lap 65 caution, most of the field pitted but Gordon stayed out, hearing that the rain was only minutes away, they had to take that chance. Gordon pitted under green on lap 82 but on the entire field pitted again on lap 90, leaving Gordon up front again and put him into the lead when leader Carl Edwards pitted on lap 98. The rains came only five laps later.

It was the fourth win this year for Gordon, tying his teammate Jimmie Johnson for most victories. It also was Gordon’s fourth win at Pocono and the 79th of his career. For Rick Hendrick, it was the 11th victory at Pocono. Newman held on to the second spot and last week’s winner Martin Truex Jr. was third. Rounding out the top ten were Casey Mears, Tony Stewart, pre-race favorite Denny Hamlin, Mark Martin, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Clint Bowyer. Chevrolet has won 13 of the 14 races so far this season. There were four cautions for ten laps and one red flag. There were fifteen lead changes among eight different drivers. The Nextel Cup Series moves to Michigan International Speedway next Sunday, June 17th, for the Citizens Bank 400.

Roger Penske said Sunday he plans to field two Dodge-backed Nextel Cup Series teams in 2008. Recent reports said Penske Racing may leave Dodge next season in favor of a move to Toyota, a rumor Penske dismissed. “Our Dodge commitment is a long-term contract,” said Penske, one of the world’s largest Toyota dealers. “I read in the paper where we were switching to Toyota. We haven’t even talked to them about it.” As for the speculated third team? “We’ve looked at whether we’d run an additional car,” Penske said. “We haven’t made any commitment on it at this point. There’s lots of speculation. We’ve got a lot of moving parts right now. I’m not committing to a third team at this point, at all.”(ESPN.com)(6-11-2007)

Penske says Busch has his support despite incident: Roger Penske certainly didn’t condone driver #2-Kurt Busch’s temper tantrum last weekend at Dover International Speedway, and he acknowledges Busch let his emotions endanger a competitor. But Penske’s a racer, he understands and respects the emotional overload on-track competition can produce. So all said, he fully supports his driver. “In my situation as a car owner, I looked at what happened last weekend and the biggest disappointment I have is that I wasn’t there to maybe keep that situation [from happening] on the pit lane,” Penske said Sunday at Pocono Raceway. Penske said he and Busch met with team executives midweek to discuss the severity of the meltdown, namely what it projected internally and externally. Penske suggested that Busch rally his team, advice the driver heeded.(ESPN.com)(6-11-2007)

Petty Enterprises/McCumbee in Victory Lane at Pocono ARCA Race: Chad McCumbee celebrated in victory lane Saturday afternoon in the ARCA RE/MAX Pocono 200. The car was a Petty Enterprises Dodge with Billy Wilburn and the #45 crew leading McCumbee to the front. For McCumbee, it was his first start for Petty Enterprises. He will race the Goodys Cool Orange Dodge in Sundays Pocono 500 at the same track. Tim Andrews, son of #43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge crew chief Paul Andrews finished third in Sundays race. The car Andrews raced is a former Petty Enterprises Dodge.(Petty Racing PR)(6-10-2007)

Haas not looking to sell despite legal woes: Nearly a year has passed since Nextel Cup team owner Gene Haas was arrested on federal tax evasion charges in California, and speculation has arisen recently that resulting financial strain could mean Haas/CNC Racing [#66-Green & #70-Sauter] may soon be sold. Haas/CNC general manager Joe Custer said Saturday that there is no truth to that speculation, and explained that the race team is technically an extension of Haas’ lucrative machine tool operation, Haas Automation, rather than a personal business owned solely by Haas.(ESPN.com)(6-10-2007)

Martin says he’s still not a full-timer: Thirteen races into the season, #01-Mark Martin remains in position to make the Chase for the Nextel Cup, even though hes only competed in 10 events. That ranks the veteran driver ahead of 22 drivers who have competed in all 13. Still, Martin said theres no chance that he will decide to run the remainder of the races, this in spite of the fact that he has never won a championship. “I dont even want to,” he said, “so if I was leading, like I was when I missed my first race, I still wouldnt. I dont want to.” Martins position hasnt wavered. Its just that people dont seem to believe him.(Gaston Gazette)(6-10-2007)

France funeral slows Earnhardt Jr. talks: Dale Earnhardt Jr. said that with most people in the industry juggling schedules to attend the funeral of NASCAR executive Bill France Jr. on Thursday, little was done as far as where he will drive in 2008 this past week. Earnhardt Jr. was one of many drivers who attended the funeral in Daytona Beach, Fla. of the man who guided the sport from 1972 to 2003. Earnhardt Jr. said there would not be much done over the Pocono race weekend. “We don’t really get a whole lot going on during the weekend because I like to be around when we’re talking and discussing.” Earnhardt Jr. said.(SceneDaily.com)(6-10-2007)

Negotiations between Biffle, Roush break down: UPDATE: Contract negotiations between #16-Greg Biffle and Roush Fenway Racing have stalled, Biffle told ESPN.com Friday at Pocono Raceway. Biffle said the decision to break off talks was his and is based largely on improving the performance of a No. 16 team that has been up-and-down of late and in a state of transition following the firing of crew chief Pat Tryson two weeks ago and subsequent hiring of crew chief Greg Irwin. Biffle expects negotiations to resume in about a month.(ESPN.com)(6-8-2007)
UPDATE: If there is any doubt Greg Biffle will return as driver of the #16 car next season he put those rumors to rest at Pocono. “Its my full intention right now to race that (#16) car next year. I cant leave next year. I not only have a contract with them (Roush-Fenway Racing) Ive got a contract with Ford. The speculation is over. I have two contracts that Im obligated to do and Im going to do. If for some reason we dont come to an agreement Ill be driving something different in 2009, not 2008. Im off the bargaining table. They need a driver for the #8 next year…thats not me…or whatever other cars.” Contract extension talks are on hold for at least the next month as Biffle wants to focus on the competition side with new crew chief Greg Irwin. “Greg is doing an unbelievable job” said Biffle. “Pat (Tryson) was a helluva crew chief. Pat got this team to where it is now. Gregs taken over and it keeps going up. Lets just work on getting into the chase instead of working on negotiating money, sponsor appearances, Busch Series stuff and all that. I want to have it done this year. I dont want it to go into next year, so heck weve got five months and thats a lot of time.”(PRNs Garage Pass)(6-9-2007)

Furniture Row tests road course car in Colorado; VIR next: Pueblo Motorsports Park proved to be a valuable resource for Colorado’s lone Nextel Cup Series team Friday. The Denver-based Furniture Row team and its test driver Scott Gaylord spent the afternoon testing the team’s car at PMP’s 2.2-mile road course. “We came here to do a shakedown,” shop manager Dave Hatfield said. “We wanted to use this facility because it is close to home. This is really the only place we can test (in Colorado) and this is a good track.” The No. 78 Furniture Row team, which is owned by Englewood businessman Barney Visser, was planning to run 35 laps at PMP in preparation for a more extensive testing session Wednesday and Thursday at Virginia International Speedway in Danville, Va. Kenny Wallace, the team’s driver, is scheduled to be at the Danville test.(Pueblo Chieftain)(6-9-2007)

Burton says RCR ‘likely’ to add fourth team next season: #31-Jeff Burton thinks Richard Childress Racing will add a fourth Nextel Cup Series team in 2008, citing much recent discussion about the subject as partial evidence. “I think it’s likely,” Burton said of adding a fourth full-time team to the RCR stable. “Obviously we can’t divulge what’s on our minds but we have some exciting things that could happen.” Burton wouldn’t divulge details, rather said “there’s a lot up in the air right now that we don’t 100 percent know what’s going to happen.” The addition isn’t a no-brainer, Burton said. He was quick to point out the negatives of adding another program: 25 percent more challenges, 25 percent more problems. The chief benefit of adding a fourth team is the additional knowledge added to the resource pool.(ESPN.com)(6-9-2007)

Two Races at Pocono in 2008: There will continue to be two NASCAR races each summer at Pocono Raceway. For years, rumors suggested otherwise. On Friday, NASCAR Vice President of Racing Operations Steve O’Donnell and President Mike Helton met with Pocono founder, Chief of Operations and CEO Dr. Joe Mattioli to iron out details of what is a continuing resolution. “We signed the deal with Doc on Friday,” O’Donnell said. “It was for one year like we do at all the tracks.” (Express Times)(6-10-2007)

Carl Edwards Wins At Nashville

Edwards Leads Train * CIA Stock Photo
Carl Edwards may run full time in the Nextel Cup Series now, but there’s no way that he’s ever miss a Busch Series race at Nashville Superspeedway. Not when you can win as easily as taking candy from a baby. Nine Cup drivers made the trip from Pocono Raceway Saturday afternoon in hopes of scooping up the lion’s share of the million dollar purse and Edwards made the most of his opportunities by winning the Federated Auto Parts 300 and took home his third straight Gibson Guitar trophy. It was the fourth Busch Series victory in 2007, all on concrete tracks, two at Nashville, one at Dover and one at Bristol. Now they call him the “Concrete King”. It was the 13th win for Edwards in 86 career races.

Clint Bowyer was in control for much of the race, leading 116 of 225 laps. But Bowyer’s car was set up by Chase Miller, since Bowyer was in Pocono for the Nextel Cup practices. So Bowyer stepped into a car that had a foreign setup and still nearly pulled the victory off. “Without practice, you got what you got,” said Bowyer of the setup on his car. “The car just didn’t suit my driving style.” Bowyer held onto the second spot and Jason Leffler drove for all he was worth to finish third. Scott Wimmer, Bowyer’s RCR teammate, had a fast car all day until the end of the race. Wimmer lead 41 laps but with 40 laps to go he started complaining of a loose condition and limped home in fourth.

Regan Smith finished fifth followed by Jason Keller, David Ragan, Todd Kluever, David Reutimann and Aric Almirola rounded out the top ten. Pole sitter Steven Wallace finished 12th o the lead lap. The race was slowed by five cautions for a total of 25 laps. There were twelve lead changes among seven different drivers. The average speed of the race was 151.899 mph. The Busch Series moves to Kentucky Speedway next Saturday night, June 16th, for the Meijer 300 Presented by Oreo. ESPN and ESPN Deportes will cover the race starting at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time.

McCumbee Earns Hard-Fought Pocono 200 Victory

LONG POND PA (6-9-07) He spent the entire race working his way back to the front, but in the end the battle was well worth it for ARCA RE/MAX Series veteran Chad McCumbee, who came from one lap down to win the Pocono 200 Saturday afternoon at Pocono Raceway.

McCumbee, after an unscheduled pitstop, earned his lap back inside of 15 laps from the finish and passed Dexter Bean with four laps to go to earn the hard-fought victory in the Victory Junction Gang Petty Enterprises Dodge. The race served as a warm-up for McCumbee’s NASCAR Nextel Cup Series debut in the next-day Pocono 500.

“I can’t thank everybody enough from Petty enterprises,” said McCumbee. “These guys are unbelievable. It’s pretty awesome to be here in victory lane. This was easy on my part; this was all these guys. Now tomorrow, that’s where I’m going to have to work a little bit harder. The confidence is up but the goals aren’t changing. I just want to learn as much as I can. I just want to run the whole race and try to finish on the lead lap.”

McCumbee started fifth and quickly worked his way up to the lead before cutting a left front tire on lap 18, which caused him to fall one lap down.

Bean, who led the most laps with 19 laps-led, settled for second in the No. 6 Five Star Telecom Chevrolet despite late-race pressure from SIM Factory Pole Award winner Tim Andrews.

“We brought a good piece here this weekend,” said Bean. “We showed up a little late to come here but it was definitely worth the wait. We had a little bit of bad luck here last year. We blew six motors including the first race here last year while we were leading.”

Andrews finished third in the No. 4 Dodge Motorsports-Cunningham Motorsports Dodge.

“That was a really cool race,” said Andrews, whose father, NASCAR NEXTEL Cup and Busch Series veteran crew chief Paul Andrews, served as his crew chief for the race. “I want to apologize to Mario again. I didn’t mean to get into him there. Mario is a great racecar driver and I just went down in the corner he gave me a bunch of room and I slid into him. I feel horrible about doing that to him. I always love working with my father; he’s a valuable asset there on the box.”

Jeremy Clements finished fourth in the One Stop Convenience Chevrolet ahead of Mario Gosselin, who finished fifth in his own DGM Racing Chevrolet.

The race was action-packed throughout with continual side-be-side racing including 11 lead changes among nine drivers.

Other lap leaders included Bryan Silas, who led twice for 15 laps and Michael McDowell, who was next on the lap-leader board with 13 laps-led. Additional lap leaders included Justin Marks (11), Andrews (8), Frank Kimmel (3), Phillip McGilton (3) and Gosselin (2).

Jason Hedlesky earned the Hoosier Tire Hard Charger Award for his 11th place finish from the 28th starting position. McDowell finished sixth and was the highest finishing rookie.

From Pocono, the ARCA RE/MAX Series steers to Brooklyn, Michigan for the ARCA RE/MAX 200 at Michigan Int’l Speedway. The race marks the sanctioning body’s 26th appearance to Michigan Int’l Speedway since 1980. Tickets are available by calling (800) 354-1010. The race will be aired LIVE on SPEED beginning at 5 p.m. Eastern on Friday, June 15, 2007.

McFarland Wins Greased Lightning 250
By Paul Warner
Sunday, June 10, 2007 4:48:00 PM

Championship prelude goes to Southern Division driver

Mansfield, Ohio-If the Greased Lightning 250 at Mansfield Motorsports Park was a preview of the Championship Series event later in the year at the Ohio track, indications are that the South might rise again.

Mark McFarland, an Aaron’s Southern Division competitor, took the lead from Mike Garvey on Lap 147 of the Greased Lightning 250 at Mansfield Motorsports Park and led to the finish of Sears Auto Center Northern Division event, making him the first two-time winner of the season. Ironically, both of McFarland’s wins have come in the Northern Division.

“I just think tracks in the Northern Division fit my driving style more,” said McFarland, driver of the No. 81s Knight’s Companies Chevrolet. “At Shenandoah [the site of McFarland’s first win] and here, you can just flat out run the car as hard as you can and still be there at the end.”

McFarland’s flat-out approach was evident in the winning pass.
