Kurt “The Jerk” Gets The NASCAR Boot
By: Capt. Herb Emory
Kurt Busch has shown his true colors again and this time he almost injured an innocent participant in what can only be described as an extreme case of racing road rage. The driver of the No. 2 Miller Lite-sponsored car almost hit a pit crew member in a temper-tantrum following a crash involving Busch and Tony Stewart at Dover.

Success Alters Smith’s Ginn Racing Schedule: Regan Smith, who ranks sixth in driver points after the first 14 Busch Series races, will compete in either a Cup, Busch, Truck or ARCA race during the remaining 23 Nextel Cup weekends. “Our main objective is to get Regan prepared for a full-time Nextel Cup ride,” said Jay Frye, Ginn Racing’s CEO and general manager. “Regan has excelled and we are currently reworking a schedule that will continue to benefit him and our racing operation. With the Car of Tomorrow scheduled to compete in all of the 2008 races, we also plan on utilizing the Busch team to assist in our aggressive COT testing program.” Smith, 23, has garnered two top-five, four top-10 and six top-15 finishes in the Busch races this season. His standing position of sixth is the highest among non-Nextel Cup regulars. He has also driven in three Cup races as the co-driver with Mark Martin in the No. 01 U.S. Army Chevrolet. “I came to Ginn Racing at the end of last year with an excellent learning opportunity, a flexible racing schedule and having Mark Martin as my mentor,” said Smith, who will compete in this weekend’s Nashville Busch race. “It’s been an incredible experience. I am happy that we’re enjoying success and feel with the program laid out for the rest of the season it will continue to prepare me for my ultimate goal of being a full-time Cup driver.” – DMF Communications For Ginn Racing, Press Release

NASCAR Community Says Goodbye To France
NASCAR stars paid respects to former chairman Bill France Jr. on Thursday in a short, simple funeral service that was far more fuss than he would have wanted. About 2,000 people filled the Performing Arts Center at Bethune-Cookman University to say goodbye to France in a send-off for a man who loved hot dogs, fishing and, more than anything else, NASCAR. “That’s enough — let’s go. You’re burning daylight,” Daytona Mayor Glenn Ritchey said as he wrapped up his remarks in a service that ran less than an hour. “That’s what he would probably say to us.” France, who spent 31 years running NASCAR, died Monday at his home after nearly a decade of declining health. “He was our mentor,” NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick said. “He was our leader. He was a great friend, and we’re all going to miss him. He was a bear of a man, but he really had a teddy bear of a heart.” Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, Ned Jarrett, and Bobby and Donnie Allison were among the retired drivers on hand, while active stars Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Dale Jarrett, Michael Waltrip, Kurt Busch, Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards and Bill Elliott joined the gathering.

Ragan finished 14th and took top rookie honors for the sixth time in 13 races. #42-Juan Pablo Montoya leads David Ragan by five points (141-136) in the Raybestos Rookie standings entering the June 10 Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway. Denny Hamlin won the 2006 Pocono 500, crossing the finish line 1.328 seconds ahead of second-place Kurt Busch. Hamlin became just the third Raybestos Rookie to score a top-five finish in the June race at Pocono, joining Jimmie Johnson (third in 2002) and Kyle Busch (fifth in 2005). Hamlin also won the pole for the race. He became just the second Raybestos Rookie to win a pole at Pocono, joining Kasey Kahne who captured the top spot at the 2004 June race. Hamlin led the race six times for 83 laps and became the first Raybestos Rookie to lead the most laps in a race at Pocono. He became just the sixth Raybestos Rookie since 1989 to lead a lap in the spring race at Pocono. Raybestos Rookies Kasey Kahne and Brian Vickers made history at Pocono during time trials for the 2004 Pocono 500. Kahne won the pole while Brian Vickers grabbed the second starting position. The 2004 event was the first time in the tracks history that TWO Raybestos Rookies started on the front row at Pocono and only the second time in the sports modern-era where there was an all rookie front row.(Camp & Assoc/Raybetos PR)(6-8-2007).

REVOLVING DOOR: The Nextel Cup season is only 13 races old, and already there have been several crew chief changes. Here’s a look:
• Pat Tryson, former longtime crew chief for Mark Martin was fired recently by Roush-Fenway Racing as Greg Biffle’s crew chief. Biffle’s new chief is Greg Erwin, who came over from Robby Gordon Motorsports and has an engineering degree from Clemson.
• Robby Gordon has replaced Erwin with Gene Nead, who won the 2005 Craftsman Truck Series championship with Ted Musgrave.
• Tommy Baldwin Jr., who won the 2002 Daytona 500 with Ward Burton, is back at the helm of the No. 22 team with Dave Blaney. He replaced Kevin Hamlin, who was ousted by team owner Bill Davis.
• Matt Borland, who began the season as Dale Jarrett’s crew chief after several seasons with Ryan Newman, has left that post to become director of competition for Haas CNC Racing. That team fields the Chevrolets driven by Johnny Sauter and Jeff Green. Jason Burdett is Jarrett’s new crew chief.
• Dave Hyder, who was suspended indefinitely in February after NASCAR inspectors found an illegal fuel additive in Michael Waltrip’s engine, has resurfaced as crew chief for Jeremy Mayfield at Bill Davis Racing.
HE SAID IT: ”See, I’m not the only one who doesn’t like the Car of Tomorrow. God hates it too.” – team owner Robert Yates on the fact the last three COT races have been delayed by rain.

There are many NASCAR racers who have enjoyed longevity in America’s top touring race series, but not many can say they have been strapping on a helmet nearly every week for four decades. Sixty-five-year-old Morgan Shepherd will be celebrating his 40th anniversary in the sport when he competes in Saturday’s Federated Auto Parts 300 at Nashville Superspeedway. In fact, after more than 500 career starts, 63 top five finishes, nearly 140 top tens and more than $10 million in race purses, Shepherd says he doesn’t see retirement coming anytime soon. And while Shepherd’s last win in Nextel Cup racing came well over a decade ago and his 16 or so Busch Series victories are becoming a distant memory as well, he knows full well that winning a soul on race day is far more important than winning on the track. “We would love to be able to win races again. I think we have the ability to do it, but we just don’t have the financial support that these other teams have,” Shepherd says. “So we will continue doing what we’re doing and are loving every minute of it.” (FM PR) (06-07-07)

Bodine Stops Skinners Streak in Texas
06-07-2007 | Charles Krall, Associate Editor
Mike Skinner was again the man to beat in Bud Pole Qualifying for the Sam’s Town 400 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Texas Motor Speedway. But unlike the previous six Truck races, someone was actually able to turn a lap quicker than Skinner in time trials meaning the 1995 series champion’s run at his own record for most consecutive poles has come to an end. Todd Bodine, who defeated Skinner here on the final lap to win this race last year, again proved to be the foil by running just 0.081 seconds quicker to earn his first pole of the 2007 season. Bodine was the fastest driver in both practice sessions earlier in the afternoon and backed it up in qualifying.

NASCAR Owes All To France
France mostly came across as interesting and interested and unpretentious as a worn tire. He was the uber-boss of an on-the-make organization. He was bound for billionaire status.
