Carl Edwards Wins At Eldora
Carl Edwards outran Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon and a field of NASCAR stars Wednesday to win a charity race on a small dirt track owned by driver Tony Stewart. Edwards won the third annual NEXTEL Prelude to the Dream at Eldora Speedway, a 53-year-old track carved out of farmland in western Ohio. About 20,000 people jammed the small grandstand, surrounding stands and grassy hillsides to watch the spectacle. Edwards started in the No. 2 position, quickly overtook Ken Schrader and held off a surging Gordon, and then Busch. The all-star event on the oval, high-bank track featured 26 drivers, each driving a 2,300-pound late-model stock car packing more than 800 horsepower. Gordon, who finished third, raced at Eldora as a youth but last raced on dirt in 1991.
Thousands of fans clogged the rural roadways around the small track and choked the entrances to see the race, which was broadcast live on HBO Pay-Per-View. Eldora, known as The Big E, is about 40 miles north of Dayton. Stewart bought the speedway in 2004 from Earl Baltes, who built it in 1954. Proceeds from the race go to the Tony Stewart Foundation and the Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randleman, N.C., which serves children ages 7 to 15 with life-threatening health issues. The camp was formed by NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series driver Kyle Petty and wife, Pattie, to honor the life of their late son, Adam.
Edwards led all but two laps en route to victory, but had to contend with Gordon and Busch throughout much of the event. Gordon, who made his first appearance at Eldora since 1991, led lap 11 and challenged Edwards throughout most of the event. — “That’s just unreal,” Edwards said. “To win this race in front of so many folks is unreal. Everyone I know is watching it at home on HBO Pay-Per-View. They have people who bought it and they are all going over to their house. I’m sure everyone enjoyed it. I can’t tell you how much it means to me to be able to support the Victory Junction Gang Camp and doing something this fun. It’s awesome. I’ve sweated out a lot of finishes in a dirt car when you can’t see behind you,” Edwards said. “The guy from Barry Wright race cars was giving me hand signals down there and he finally quit giving me signals. I knew they were right there on my tail.” — There were three cautions during the event, although the laps conducted under caution did not count. The only major accident occurred on lap 17 when Tony Stewart, Bobby Labonte and Kasey Kahne crashed in turn two. Labonte and Stewart, who finished 21st and 22nd, respectively, were done for the night. Kahne was able to continue and finished sixth.

TNT Fuels Six Weeks of NASCAR Coverage with New Show, New Set and New Innovative TV format: TNT announced its new programming lineup for the network’s upcoming Nextel Cup Series coverage, which includes coverage of six consecutive Cup races beginning on Sunday, June 10th from Pocono Raceway. The NASCAR on TNT Summer Series will feature new race analysts, a new pre-race show that will provide extended trackside coverage prior to the start of each race, and a cutting-edge new television format called Wide Open Coverage which will make its debut Saturday, July 7th from the Daytona International Speedway. TNT’s first race telecast of the season will include a tribute to the late Bill France Jr., who passed away earlier this week. The network’s summer 2007 race programming marks TNT’s 23rd year of televising Cup coverage, making it NASCAR’s longest running broadcast partner.
TNT’s new NASCAR announcing booth will include seven-year veteran TNT announcers Bill Weber (play-by-play) and Wally Dallenbach (analyst), who will be joined by current Cup Series driver, Kyle Petty. Petty, as previously announced, will serve as an analyst for all six of TNT’s Cup races, calling the race in Sonoma, CA on June 24 from behind the wheel of his #45 Dodge. Veteran NASCAR crew chief Larry McReynolds will also join the TNT broadcast team, serving in a specialty role of analyst and reporter. From interviewing crew chiefs on pit road to conducting demonstrations on the TNT Ford Test Car, McReynolds’ unique role will take him from the infield set position to various locations around the track to help bring viewers closer to the action.
The network’s roster of announcers will be rounded out by veteran pit reporters Marty Snider, Matt Yocum, Ralph Sheheen and Lindsay Czarniak. On June 10th preceding the Pocono 500, TNT will debut “NASCAR on TNT Live!” Hosted by Marc Fein, the show will include all of the TNT announcers and pit reporters who will provide analysis and commentary on the NASCAR season to date. Additionally, the show will include a segment from TNT’s six-part series on the roots of racing, entitled “The Pride of NASCAR.” The weekly features will spotlight six racing legends and their contributions to the sport, including Richard Petty, David Pearson and Junior Johnson, among others. TNT’s 90-minute pre-race coverage will also include the “Allstate Countdown to Green” show, hosted by Bill Weber, which will include the show’s signature “Wally’s World” segment featuring various celebrities taking a ride around the track with Wally Dallenbach. The network will utilize its new state-of-the-art mobile set for all of its pre-race coverage. Located in the track infield during all six TNT Cup telecasts, the fully-functioning rig features a retractable platform stage that can rotate a full 360-degrees and be raised seven feet off the base of the truck into the air. Once fully extended, the height of rig reaches a towering 26 feet tall.
TNT will debut its highly-anticipated new NASCAR broadcast format, Wide Open Coverage, during the primetime Nextel Cup Series race – the Pepsi 400 – on Saturday, July 7 from Daytona International Speedway. A groundbreaking new television format, Wide Open Coverage will provide continuous race coverage free of national commercial breaks and will feature animated national sponsor messages, including original branded content and distinct on-screen graphic elements. The unique sponsor graphics and vignettes will appear along the lower portion of the screen in place of traditional commercial interruptions, limiting the telecast to only three local commercial breaks per hour. In addition, the landmark production features 22% more unobstructed race action than that of a standard telecast. Autozone, Direct TV, Ford, Miller Brewing, Pepsi, Principal Financial, Sprint, Subway and Toyota are the initial sponsors for TNT’s coverage of the race.(TNT PR)(6-7-2007)
Nextel Cup owner Ray Evernham took another step on Wednesday toward finalizing his partnership with Montreal Canadiens owner George Gillett Jr., informing his more than 35 sponsors collectively on how the deal will work. Evernham has been negotiating for months an agreement that will give Gillett substantial ownership of his organization. He told sponsors the partnership will allow him to focus more on the competition side of the business and provide him with the resources to keep up with top organizations. The final terms aren’t expected to be completed for another two to three months. “A partnership with the Gillett Group would bring excellent resources to Evernham Motorsports,” Evernham told his sponsors. “Not only does George Gillett offer incredible business experience, his team has deep knowledge of how to successfully manage sports organizations. “This partnership would also benefit our partners at Evernham Motorsports with new business-to-business marketing opportunities.” Evernham told his sponsors he would continue to own a significant part of EMS and remain the CEO. “It is an excellent opportunity that would benefit the entire organization,” he said.(ESPN.com)(6-6-2007)

NASCAR fans are never ones to shy away from the souvenir tent. But when Dale Jr. announced in May that he would be leaving the DEI team, “collectibles” took on a whole new meaning.
Fans across the country have been clamoring to get their hands on memorabilia marking Jr.’s time with the team bearing his father’s name. According to industry reports, sales of Dale Jr.’s merchandise are up 17 percent since May.
Among the most coveted souvenirs? Limited-edition Dale Earnhardt, Jr. #8 Crocs.
You’ve no doubt seen Crocs before – their 35+ styles are sold in 80 countries worldwide – and you may even own some yourself. They’re made with a revolutionary material called Croslite that makes them lightweight, odor-resistant, and – most important for the racing fan – quite possibly the most comfortable shoe you’ll ever slip on your feet.
Check ‘em out here:

At NASCAR.com and events nationwide, NASCAR fans have been quick to purchase Crocs sporting the names and autographs of their favorite drivers and – not surprisingly – Dale Jr.’s #8 Crocs are among the most popular.
For those fans who still hope to capture Jr.’s legacy as a DEI driver, red Crocs featuring Dale Jr.’s initials and #8 continue to be available at NASCAR.com, as well as NASCAR events, for a suggested retail value of $34.99…but only while supplies last. Crocs has ceased production of the #8 shoes, so they are sure to be a collector’s item for devoted Dale Jr. fans.

OWENSBORO, KY.- (June 6) – Golfers and motorsports celebrities will hit the links on Wednesday, July 18, for the Seventh Annual Green Foundation Celebrity Golf Tournament.
The charity fundraiser will take place at the Summit Country Club in Owensboro, KY.
Co-founded by NASCAR stars Jeff and Mark Green, who hail from Owensboro, the Green Foundation has raised over $500,000 dollars for various charities since its inception, through the golf tournament and other events.
The proceeds from this year’s competition will benefit The Victory Junction Gang Camp, the Owensboro Area Museum of Science and History’s “SPEEDZEUM,” and other Owensboro area charities.
Best Buy, which sponsors Jeff Green’s No. 66 Haas CNC Racing Chevrolet in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series, is sponsoring the tournament.
“We’re looking forward to a great event,” Mark Green said. “We always have a good time, and we’re able to see a lot of old friends and help some great organizations at the same time.”
“We have to thank Best Buy and Valor Oil for their help in putting this on,” said Jeff Green. “We’ve been fortunate to be associated with some great people in our time in racing, and these two companies are made up of people who really care about helping others. We’re expecting this to be our best event yet.”
The tournament is a four-person scramble format, with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Lunch, as well as snacks and beverages, will be provided.
Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third-place teams, as well as individual awards for the golfer who sinks the longest putt, the player who hits the straightest drive, and the participant who is closest to the pin. Moving Forward
Furniture Row Racing gears up to take on Pocono Raceway this weekend. The track has the characteristics of both a road course and a superspeedway because of its unique shape and challenging turns. General Manager Joe Garone describes the game plan for tackling the 2.5 mile triangle track.
“We are anxious for Pocono and are bringing Kenny’s favorite car. Kenny hasn’t raced at Pocono in recent years, but feels like he should be able to pick it up right away. We may change our practice strategy allowing Kenny and Crew Chief Jay Guy to get more laps in to figure out what the car wants before qualifying.”
The team hopes to rebound from a disappointing qualifying effort last weekend at Dover.
“After making 6 races in a row, Dover’s qualifying outcome was a disappointment,”states Garone. “Despite not pulling up a big time during the practice session, we knew we had a good running car. We ran our best times the last two runs of the session on old tires posting a time of 24.229, and felt we should run a 23.90 qualifying time. Unfortunately, due to a fuel delivery problem the engine did not run near it’s maximum power and we were not able to run any faster than a 24.204. The final transfer position was a 24.05.”
In other news:
Furniture Row Racing was saddened to learn of the passing of William C. France last Monday, and would like to express their condolences to the France family.
NASCAR Vice Chairman William C. France, whose leadership helped turn a family-owned company into a national phenomenon, died at his home in Daytona Beach, Fla. at the age of 74.
France served as NASCAR’s president from 1972-2000, taking over from his father, NASCAR founder William H.G. “Big Bill” France.
In 2000, France – known as “Bill Jr.”- became NASCAR’s CEO and the chairman of the newly created NASCAR Board of Directors.
In October 2003, the torch was atain passed, with France’s son Brian France taking over as Chairman and CEO. France became Vice Chairman at that time, whereupon his influence and input remained considerable- and valuable.
“He had a remarkable career and ab even-more remarkable life,” said Brian France.”Words cannot express how much he’ll be missed by myself and the rest of our family and by the NASCAR industry overall.”

Pennsylvanian Bobby Gerhart To Make 36th Career Pocono Start
Bobby Gerhart has five Daytona trophies. In the ARCA RE/MAX Series world, that’s more than any other human times almost two. In terms of racing accomplishments, they are, without question, his most prized possessions.
However, as a bona fide member of the Pennsylvania posse, there’s another award that would certainly rate among his Daytona hardware – a trophy with a triangle on it. AKA – a victory at Pocono Raceway.
It’s not like he hasn’t been trying either. The 48-year-old Lebanon, Pennsylvania veteran will be making his 36th Pocono start in this Saturday’s Pocono 200. That means that Gerhart has raced in all but eight ARCA RE/MAX Series races ever held on Pocono’s renowned 2.5-mile triangle since 1983. His shop is about a 100 miles away from the track.

Championship-Caliber Field Flocks to Mansfield
Greased Lightning 250 carries big buzz, bigger entry list
Myrtle Beach, S.C.-For the past seven seasons, the Hooters Pro Cup Championship Series has given short-track fans a chance to see the “Best of the Best” battle it out in a five-race shootout for more than a $1,000,000 in purses and point fund. But several times each season, Pro Cup fans are treated to Championship preview races.
The Greased Lightning 250 at Mansfield (Ohio) Motorsports Park on Saturday, June 9 will be one of those races.
With Mansfield hosting a Championship Series event later this year, more than 45 cars are expected to show up. And while the event is a Sears Auto Center Northern Division event, fans should expect a gaggle of Southern Division competitors to make the trek to Ohio for valuable track time and, more importantly, bragging rights.
“You take pride when you can win any Hooters Pro Cup event,” said Clay Rogers, driver of the No. 29n Bowen Family Homes Chevrolet. “But when you have the best of the best coming together, it makes it that much more special. I say the more the merrier.”
