Robby Gordon Second In Baja 500
Robby Gordon, finished second overall and second in the SCORE International trophy truck class in this year’s Baja 500. Gordon’s Monster Energy / Toyo Tires No. 71 Chevy CK1500, finished just 3 minutes, 57 seconds behind Ragland/Collins, this year’s overall winners. Shortly after 10 a.m. on Saturday morning Robby Gordon and navigator, Gregg Till took the green flag starting 22nd based on a random draw for starting position. As it turns out, starting position would ultimately dictate the outcome of the race. Employing a clever pit strategy, Gordon passed a handful of competitors while they were in the pits. However, there was a group ahead of Gordon enjoying a relatively dust – free ride. Gordon continued to push the pace and passed most of the remaining trucks ahead of him; however, it wasn’t enough to bring Gordon his fourth Baja 500 victory. Gordon’s Monster Energy / Toyo Tires trophy truck crossed the finished line as the third overall vehicle ; however, the corrected time was good enough for a second place overall finish.

Truex Tames Monster Mile For First Win
Martin Truex Jr. picked up his first Nextel Cup victory in 58 career races by dominating the Autism Speaks 400 at Dover International Speedway on Monday. Truex led a total 216 laps of 400 and broke the Hendrick Motorsports string of five straight wins in the new car.

The race was delayed because of rain in the area on Sunday, leaving the track without any rubber — so NASCAR — for the first time in my memory — called for two competition cautions to check tire wear. The cars that were setup properly, and Truex apparently had one of those, had fewer problems with the tires. Pole sitter Ryan Newman led the early part of the race and finished second with Carl Edwards in the third spot. Denny Hamlin was fourth followed by Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle, Mark Martin, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Gordon and Robby Gordon to round out the top ten.

On lap 275, Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart started playing bumper tag. It appeared that the two drivers made contact several times, and Busch dove below Stewart to make a pass, and then tried to slide back up in front of Stewart. The only problem was Busch wasn’t by Stewart and Stewart wasn’t going to let him have the spot. The stubbornness of each driver put both cars into the wall. Then as Stewart was stopped in his pit stall, Busch pull alongside Stewart, stopped and started screaming at him.

NASCAR ejected Busch from the race on the spot and everyone involved, including both crew chiefs, were summoned to the NASCAR trailer for consultation. The Nextel Cup Series moves to Pocono Raceway next Sunday, June 10th, for the Pocono 500. The race begins at 2 p.m. EDT with live, high-definition coverage provided by TNT.

Kenseth To Fund Son’s Racing
The matter of NASCAR driver Matt Kenseth funding his son’s racing finally gets ironed out. The 2003 Winston Cup champion and Ross’s mom have been going at it — through their attorneys, of course — to reach a financial agreement to keep 14 year-old Ross, who has been racing–and winning — since the age of 3, in a set of wheels. After a year-long battle, the former couple have finally inked a deal to cover Ross’s racing expenses separate from their previous paternity/child support arrangement, which remains intact and unchanged.

Stremme OK after getting out of car at Dover: David Stremme had to reluctantly climb out of the #40 Coors Light Dodge a little more than 125 laps short of the finish line Monday after realizing he was too sick to continue racing in the Autism Speaks 400. The 29-year-old driver was immediately taken to the Dover International Speedway infield care center where he was diagnosed with the flu. He received oxygen and intravenous fluids before being released. Ginn Racing driver Regan Smith stepped in to help the #40 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS) team finish the day in 36th place. The #40 CGRFS Dodge lined up in 35th place to take the green. Battling flu-like conditions, Stremme did all he could to keep the car on the track in the early running of the 400-lap competition. In addition to feeling sick, the #40 Dodge was keeping him busy as it was severely loose on restarts and seemed to tighten up on long runs. Stremme threw in the towel as the fourth yellow flag of the race waved on lap 271. His crew members helped him out of the Coors Light Dodge. Then, Smith quickly climbed in to help the team finish the race.(CGRFS PR)(6-5-2007)

Aflac is on the verge of securing a multiyear team sponsorship deal with Roush Fenway Racing, Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal reports. Staff writer Michael Smith also cites sources who say that the company is talking to NASCAR about acquiring official status in the category of supplemental insurance. Aflac’s sponsorship with Roush Fenway is expected to include four Nextel Cup races this year as the primary sponsor on Greg Biffle’s #16 car. The car is sponsored by Ameriquest, a troubled subprime lender that has been looking to sell off races and get out of the final two years of its deal. Aflac also will be featured as a primary sponsor for four Busch Series races this year, the story says, and to settle into a full-time Busch Series sponsorship with Roush Fenway for 2008. An announcement about the sponsorship is expected sometime this month. The story also says that Aflac was involved in discussions with Dale Earnhardt Inc. for a deal that would have involved Dale Earnhardt Jr., but that deal fell through before Earnhardt’s announcement that he’d leave DEI.(NASCAR Scene)(6-4-2007)

Dover spring race to April? NASCAR officials are contemplating moving the spring races at Dover International Speedway from June to April as part of a plan to revamp the first half of the racing schedule next season. It’s a possibility that Denis McGlynn, president and CEO of Dover Motorsports Inc., would rather not think about. McGlynn said it’s “way too early” to predict what will happen with the spring race weekend. The culmination of this spring’s race weekend, the Autism Speaks 400 Nextel Cup race, was rained out Sunday and is scheduled to be made up today at noon. This is the first time Dover’s spring Nextel Cup race has been postponed since 1975, when the race was held in May. It would seem that having the Dover spring races in April would be worse. For one, the weather is much more unpredictable than it is the weekend after Memorial Day, when the spring races have been held since 1987. In addition, the track’s harness racing season doesn’t end until mid-April, and McGlynn said there wouldn’t be enough time to get the NASCAR track ready for auto racing by the end of the month. The only alternative in May would be a Mother’s Day race weekend, which for the past three years has been held in Darlington, S.C. The annual Old Dover Days takes place the first weekend in May. The Nextel All-Star Challenge is held two weeks after that. Typically, Nextel Cup takes the third week of the season off. NASCAR is considering pushing that first off-week back to the first weekend in June, the spot now occupied by the spring Dover race. “We’re looking at ways to fill that hole” in the third week of the season, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said. “We’re looking to run more races before the break.” Poston said NASCAR would like to get a consensus from track owners and driver teams before changing the schedule. He said pushing the first break back a few months would keep the momentum going from the start of the season. The 2008 schedule will be released in August.(Delaware News Journal)(6-4-2007)

While Jon Wood recovers, team development driver Kelly Bires will be behind the wheel of the Clorox/American Red Cross Ford. Bires has been driving the team’s Craftsman Truck Series entry. Crew Chief Scott Zipadelli said, “The important thing is for Jon to feel better. There’s no timetable, no hurry to make that happen. We’ll take it race-by-race and go from there.” (JTG PR) (06-04-07)

Aflac’s sponsorship with Roush Fenway is expected to include four Nextel Cup races this year as the primary sponsor on Greg Biffle’s No. 16 car. Aflac also will be featured as a primary sponsor for four Busch Series races this year, the story says, and to settle into a full-time Busch Series sponsorship with Roush Fenway for 2008. An announcement about the sponsorship is expected sometime this month. (Scene Daily) (06-04-07)

Paul Tracy Wants to Run Montreal Busch Race: UPDATE 3: Paul Tracy said [Friday] he’s closing in on a deal that would put him in a car for the NAPA Auto Parts 200 NASCAR Busch Series race on Aug. 4, elite stock-car racing’s first foray into Canada. “I’m 90-percent sure I’ll be racing NASCAR in Montreal,” said Tracy, with 30 career victories the winningest active driver in Champ Car competition. “I’m pretty close to putting a deal together, (which) should come together in the next couple of weeks.” Tracy wouldn’t specify for whom he’d race, but did say “it’s a top team, and a top-level car that’s won races this year.” That’s “races” – plural.(Montreal Gazette)(5-26-2007)
UPDATE: Sources have told Sun Media that Tracy was contacted by his old buddy Richard Childress about the possibility of driving one of his Richard Childress Racing Chevys at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. “There was some pressure put on NASCAR by Montreal race promoter Normand Legault to get Tracy a good ride and that’s how RCR got involved,” the source said. Most likely it will be the #21 Chevy — that already has been to victory lane this season with defending champion Kevin Harvick behind the wheel. It would make it the best car Tracy has had in his brief NASCAR career that started and ended last season with a series of back-of-the-pack teams with no real chance of competing with the likes of RCR. Adding Tracy to the line-up in Montreal will bring the Canadian content to five — the most ever to start a top NASCAR series race. The other four are Ron Fellows, who will drive a [#33] Kevin Harvick Inc. Chevrolet; [#72] D.J. Kennington, who will drive the MacDonald Motorsports Dodge; J.R. Fitzpatrick in a Fitzpatrick Motorsports Chevrolet; and Andrew Ranger, who still is looking for a ride, but is said to be close to a deal.(Toronto Sun)(5-29-2007)
UPDATE 2: According to Doug Barnette of Player Management International, who handles Paul Tracy’s NASCAR endeavors, Paul is interested in running Montreal, however they have not had any conversations with the promoter of the Montreal race or anyone at NASCAR or anyone at RCR. Barnette has had contact with a high level Busch Series team (not RCR) and they are exploring opportunities, but that is as far as it has gotten at this point.(5-29-2007)
UPDATE 3: Paul Tracy says he likely won’t be at this summer’s Busch race in Montreal. The former Champ Car champion tells the Speed TV program “WindTunnel” that plans for him to drive the #77 car for Kevin Harvick Inc. simply fell through due to sponsorship conflicts. Tracy says he was contacted about a month ago by Kevin Harvick who offered him a competitive ride in his Busch Series car alongside fellow Canadian Ron Fellows. Tracy says both sides could not find a suitable compromise between one of his primary sponsors and Harvick’s sponsor, so the deal fell apart.(TSN.ca)(6-4-2007)

Marc Mitchell to Run for CJM at Milwaukee: Marc Mitchell will make one more ARCA start before fulfilling an agreement he recently reached with #11-CMJ Racing to make his first Busch Series start on June 23 in Milwaukee. Mitchell plans to run seven more ARCA races after Pocono and Milwaukee, where he’s hoping to impress the CMJ team even more. Mitchell said he’s also optimistic because Jason Keller, who has been racing the Busch Series for 16 years, will be working with his crew.(Tallahassee Democrat)(6-4-2007)

ARCA/NASCAR Connection 50+ Years Strong
Racing Community Mourns Passing of NASCAR’s Bill France, Jr.
William (“Bill”) C. France, 74, passed away Monday afternoon in Daytona Beach, Florida. France is remembered – and revered – as the man who followed his visionary father at the helm of NASCAR and International Speedway Corporation (“ISC”), in the process becoming a visionary himself, as he guided NASCAR to unprecedented levels of popularity, and grew ISC into a leading position in the motorsports industry. He combined pragmatism with optimism, an approach that resulted in a calculated – and adventurous – road to success. France, 74, grew up in the formative years of stock car racing, living and learning every detail of the sport from his own experiences, and those of his father William Henry Getty France – who was known as Bill Sr. Bill Sr. was the founder and first president of NASCAR, and created the organization that evolved into what is known today as ISC. The entire racing community, and in particular, the ARCA family of officials, racers, sponsors, and fans, mourns the passing of France, who was a long time friend and supporter of the ARCA RE/MAX Series.

Kimmel Catching Katona’s All-Time Win Mark

Current and defending ARCA RE/MAX Series point leader Frank Kimmel, in the No. 46 TransAmerica-Fort Dodge Animal Health-Pork Ford, earned his 69th career ARCA RE/MAX Series victory under the lights on Saturday night at Iowa Speedway. Kimmel’s win in the Prairie Meadows 250 represented the eight-time series champion’s career first win at Iowa Speedway and first win of 2007. The victory broke a ten-race winless streak for Kimmel, who ranks second to Iggy Katona (79 series wins) on the series all-time win list. Kimmel’s last victory came at Talladega Superspeedway in October of 2006. Kimmel has now earned victories on every track on the current ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule with the exception of Daytona Int’l Speedway and USA Int’l Speedway in Lakeland, Florida. In all, Kimmel has logged victories at 26 different current and former ARCA RE/MAX Series tracks.

An Eye for an Eye
Clay Rogers Wins Aaron’s 199

Jefferson, Ga.-Through three Sears Auto Center Northern Division events this season, two winners have come out of the Southern Division. Well, Clay Rogers carried the Northern flag down to the Aaron’s Southern Division for the running of the Aaron’s 199 at Peachstate Speedway on Sunday, June 3 and returned the favor.

Rogers, driver of the No. 29n Bowen Family Homes Chevrolet, took the lead from Bill Plemons Jr. on Lap 118 and held off a hard-charging Michael Ritch for his first win of the season.

“I’m just happy to get a win for everybody on this Bowen team,” said Rogers, who pushed his career earnings to $1,115,750 with the win. “Their corporate office is right down the road and they had a lot of people here today.

“Keith [Hinkein] made a great call for us to come in to get fuel early. The car was little tight in the center of the corner, once the fuel burnt off, but we also had a few cautions towards the end of the race that could have had a little affect on the car.”

Rogers had a hand in one of those cautions.
