No one’s commented, but we’ve changed over the TV listings to Jayski’s… mostly because the Race Fan TV listings were making the Gazette way too large. We think that was what was causing the duplicate mailings; the large size.

NASCAR Drivers Ragan, Sauter Test at Infineon Raceway: Drivers David Ragan and Johnny Sauter spent Tuesday afternoon testing the twists and turns of Infineon Raceway, in preparation for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race, June 22-24. It was the first time on the road course for Sauter, while Ragan visited Sonoma in February for a one-day test session. Both drivers will make their first race start on the 10-turn road course in June. Ragan, driver of the No. 6 AAA Ford, piloted an American Speed Association (ASA) stock car supplied by Pioneer Motorsports out of Lake Oroville. He was coached by NASCAR Grand National Division West Series driver Kenny Shepherd and completed approximately 100 laps in the partial-day test. “You could be here for two days and do tons of laps and lose your focus, so these shorter tests are perfect for me,” said Ragan. “It’s been much smoother for me this time out, and it didn’t take me nearly as long to get comfortable on the track.” Sauter, who drives the No. 70 Yellow Transportation Chevrolet, tested Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday behind the wheel of a late-model stock car supplied by ShiftIntoGear, Inc. It marked Sauter’s first visit to Infineon Raceway and the Sonoma Valley. “It’s so helpful just to even get a few laps in on a brand new track,” said Sauter. “I really just want to get a feel for the track. If I can pick up this place like I did Mexico City, I should be in good shape.” For ticket information on the Toyota/Save Mart 350, June 22-24, call 800-870-RACE or visit www.infineonraceway.com. - Infineon Raceway, Press Release

Toyota: Gibbs? Penske merge with Waltrip? Yates? Toyota, sources said, has approached the Gibbs team with a proposal to leave Chevrolet, which would give it #20-Tony Stewart, #11-Denny Hamlin and #18-J.J. Yeley. Gibbs’ management doesn’t appear to be that interested, but the offer hasn’t been rejected, according to team sources. Penske [#2, #12], who has been with just about every manufacturer in racing over the years and who is one of the world’s biggest Toyota dealers, could be making the move to Toyota for next year. According to sources close to the situation, Penske could be looking at a merger with Michael Waltrip’s struggling Toyota operation. And there is speculation that Robert and Doug Yates [#38, #88] may be willing to listen to Toyota offers, even though they have long-standing ties with Ford.(Winston Salem Journal)(5-31-2007)

NASCAR Might Relax Testing Policy: NASCAR is considering opening up its restrictive testing policy, which several teams already have skirted this season. Currently, rules limit teams to seven tests on Nextel Cup-sanctioned tracks, and crew chiefs help NASCAR decide the venues and dates. NASCAR adopted that policy two years ago to help underfunded teams keep up with big-budget organizations, who could afford to test anytime. But as the Car of Tomorrow was rolled into competition, the top teams found ways to test it outside of the rules. “It appears that we’ve got teams that want to test more and teams that want to test less, and teams that test on tires that are not made by our tire supplier,” Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition, told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “So we’re going to start looking at a lot of different things, from eventually lifting the test ban completely, or get as restrictive as we cannot let teams test anywhere at any time, or land somewhere in between.” NASCAR most likely will relax the restrictions, because it’s having a hard time policing teams. More than 20 teams tested Tuesday and Wednesday at Virginia International Raceway, a road course where they could simulate the June 24 race in Sonoma, Calif. Because VIR is not a sanctioned track, any team can go there and still be within NASCAR’s guidelines. But teams can’t use current Goodyear tires because of a leasing agreement intended to prevent extracurricular testing. To circumvent the lack of available tires, teams have started using other manufacturers for test sessions. They also snapped up much of Goodyear’s inventory from 2005 and earlier.(Associated Press)(5-31-2007)

After 12 races in 2004-2006 worst spot a future chaser was? with #9-Kasey Kahne, 32nd in drivers championship points after 12 races, I have been asked…what is the worst spot a driver has come from after 12 races in the three previous Chase’s.
2006: after the 12th race, #11-Hamlin was 12th in drivers points [and made it in the chase at 5th]
2005: it was #17-Matt Kenseth who was 23rd [and made it in at 9th].
In the first year of the Chase, 2004: Mark Martin [then in the #6, now in the #01] was 15th [and went into the chase at 9th].
The three drivers who won the last three Nextel Cup Championships were no deeper then 8th, that being #97-Kurt Busch in 2004. In 2006 #48-Jimmie Johnson was 1st and in 2005, #20-Tony Stewart was 6th
What drivers were highest in the points after 12 races and did NOT make the Chase?
2006: #20-Stewart was 4th
2005: #38[now #19]-Sadler was 3rd
2004: #18-now #43]-Labonte was 6th

Only the second time ever in the Cup series: Casey Mears becomes another first time winner for Rick Hendrick (the 8th from the Hendrick stable). Brian Vickers was the last first time winner, also from the Hendrick stable. In fact, they both won their first career race while driving the same car, Hendrick’s #25 Chevy. Did you know that the only other time that consecutive ‘first-time’ winners drove the same car was way back in 1950, 57 years ago. Harold Kite scored his first career win while driving his own #21 Lincoln. Then the next first time winner in the top series was Tim Flock, driving the same #21 Lincoln. These are the only two instances in which the same car produced two consecutive ‘first-time’ winners. Did you know part 2 - Only 4 times in Cup history has an owner produced 2 consecutive first time winners. The two mentioned above plus: in 1957, Bob Welborn was the car owner when he won his first race. Then Bob Welborn was the car owner of the next first-time winner, Max Welborn. And in recent times, Jack Roush was the owner of consecutive first-timers, Greg Biffle in 2003 and then Carl Edwards broke a 1 1/2 year drought of first-timers, in 2005.(LTPicks.com)(5-31-2007)

Hamlin’s Team Captures Pit Crew Challenge Win in Charlotte: Denny Hamlin’s #11 over-the-wall crew claimed the weekly Checkers/Rally’s Double Drive-Thru Challenge win in Sunday’s Memorial Day weekend classic at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. This is the team’s third win and moves them in to second-place in the season-long standings. The FedEx team, which spent 423.882 seconds on pit road, helped its driver to a ninth-place finish in the Coca-Cola 600. Checkers/Rally’s will award an $11,000 prize to Hamlin’s over-the-wall team for winning the weekly competition. An additional $111,150 will be presented to the pit crew with the most Double Drive-Thru Challenge wins at the completion of the 36-race Nextel Cup schedule. The #11 Joe Gibbs Racing crew includes: Scott Wood (jackman), Scott Merritt (front-tire carrier), Dennis Terry (front-tire changer), Heath Cherry (rear-tire carrier), Jonathan Sherman (rear-tire changer), Brad Rothlin (gasman), John Eicher (catch can) and Bobby Christensen (eighth-man). The pit crew coordinator is Paul Alepa. Twelve races into the Nextel Cup season, Mark Martin’s/Regan Smith’s #01 pit crew leads the Checkers/Rally’s Double Drive-Thru Challenge standings with four wins. To win the Checkers/Rally’s Double Drive-Thru Challenge, teams are required to finish on the lead lap while spending the least amount of time on pit road. Checkers/Rally’s is in its third season as title sponsor for the pit crew challenge. Checkers/Rally’s is the Official Burger and Drive-Thru Restaurant of NASCAR, more info at checkers.com.(DMF Communications PR)(5-31-2007)

Dover Rookie Notes: #42-Juan Pablo Montoya was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in the May 27 Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Montoya placed 28th and took top rookie honors for the fifth time this season. Montoya leads David Ragan by six points (131-125) in the Raybestos Rookie standings entering the June 3 Autism Speaks 400 Presented by Visa at Dover International Speedway. Denny Hamlin was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in the 2006 Autism Speaks 400 Presented by Visa, scoring an 11th-place finish. Only two Raybestos Rookies have won the spring race at Dover: Jimmie Johnson and Davey Allison, who both scored their second career wins at Dover. Johnson won the 2002 race while Allison captured the 1987 event. The best start by a Raybestos Rookie in the spring race at Dover is second by Morgan Shepherd in 1981.(Raybestos PR),

Highs and Lowes

Furniture Row Racing successfully qualified for their 6th race in a row last weekend at Lowes Motor Speedway in Charlotte,NC. The team qualified 31st fastest on time, but were assigned the 43rd starting position due to owners points.

The race was going well until the team ran into engine trouble.

General Manager, Joe Garone elaborates on the situation.

We had a disappointing end to our Charlotte weekend due to engine failure. The Lowes race is hard on equipment and for us it proved to be disastrous. With a solid top 25 finish in our sight, the engine failed with approximately 110 laps to go of the scheduled 400-lap event. Kenny drove a smart race avoiding some spectacular crashes, but was left with a discontent feeling after finishing 34th.

This weekend the team regroups and heads to the Monster Mile at Dover. Sundays race will mark a return of the Car of Tomorrow for the sixth time this season. The new car is being run in 16 races this season, the next coming at Infineon Raceway on June 24th. It was recently announced that the three-year rollout plan that was originally in place for the car will be accelerated, and the new car will be fully implemented for the 2008 season.

Dover is a physically demanding, one mile oval racetrack. When cars hit the wall, they hit hard. The corners are wide, but the straight-aways are not.

The Autism Speaks 400 will be broadcast live on FOX TV, PRN Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio on Sunday, June 3, 2007 beginning at 1:00 P.M. EDT.

NASCAR announced today that Chuck Meyers, crew chief of the No. 1 Chevrolet driven by J.J. Yeley in the NASCAR Busch Series, has been fined due to rule violations this past weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Meyers was fined $1,000 for violating Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing), 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used that do not conform to NASCAR rules) and 20A–3.2.3A: right side window too thin of the 2007 NASCAR Busch Series Rule Book. The infraction was discovered during practice on May 26. (NASCAR PR) (05-30-07)

Logano Could Run Some Busch Races in ‘08: [17 year old Joe Gibbs development driver Joey] Logano has wheeled every kind of racing vehicle imaginable in the last few years, including a short stint in a Mark Martin Racing Pro Series Truck. After spending time with Logano, Martin said the youngster was fully capable of racing a Nextel Cup car. Martin made that statement almost two years ago. A driver must be 18 to race in a NASCAR national series (Nextel, Busch, truck), so Logano is getting as much big-track experience as possible before he becomes of age. When this kid gets a big-league NASCAR license, he’s expected to quickly blossom into a big-time racing driver. “I know they’ve been talking about a Busch car next year sometime,” Logano said. “Not real sure when or what car I’m going to drive yet. I know I have a long-term relationship with Gibbs. We’ll see how it goes.”(Daytona Beach News-Journal)(5-30-2007)

Ollie’s Bargain Outlet on the 337 at Dover: The primary sponsor for Brewco’s #37 Ford this week is Ollie’s Bargain Outlet. Established in 1982 and headquartered in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Ollie’s is the Mid-Atlantic’s largest retailer of closeout, surplus and salvage merchandise.(Brewco PR)(5-30-2007)

Burney Lamar Still Looking for Ride: For the first time in his life, Burney Lamar has slowed down to reflect. “My whole life, all I ever did was race, race, race,” the driver said. “It’s been a really relaxing, easygoing year so far. But part of me still can’t wait to get back on the racetrack.” Lamar, 26, went from NASCAR sensation to out of work in what seemed like a seven-second pit stop. A year after making a huge splash in the Busch Series [#77 Dollar General Chevy for KHI], the Sacramento State graduate is looking for a job in an ultratight market, squeezed out of his seat by a sponsor who wanted a big-name Nextel Cup veteran instead of a relative unknown. Lamar is waiting for mid-summer’s silly season, when owners make wholesale changes and start hiring new drivers. Two or three months from now, he expects some cars to come his way. “I’ve got to be patient,” he said. “I know I’ll be back. We’re working hard to get something put together for full time next year.”(Sacramento Bee)(5-30-2007)

Aaron’s 199 to be Fast and Furious
By Paul Warner
Passing a Plenty at Peach State
Longs, S.C.-The Aaron’s 199 at Peach State (Ga.) Speedway may be shorter than the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega, but the on-track action will be just a frantic on Saturday, June 2 when Hooters Pro Cup Series rolls into town for the fourth installment of the Aaron’s Southern Division season.

Over the past few years, the number of lead changes at Peach State Speedway has resembled restrictor-plate racing stats. In last year’s two events at the high-banked, half-mile track, 28 lead changes took place in 500 laps.

Brandon Ward Silences Few Remaining Doubters
Wednesday, May 30, 2007 10:17:00 AM

Madison, Wis.-Just five days before the USAR ProCup Northern Division season opener, Randy Humphrey Racing announced that rookie Brandon Ward would be behind the wheel of the No. 93 SupplyOne Fusion in 2007. The message boards and rumor mills started churning instantly. “Who’s Brandon Ward?” many wanted to know.

But nobody is asking that question any longer. Just three races into the season, Ward has created Pro Cup Series reverberations by backing up an outside pole qualifying run at Shenandoah with a stellar second-place finish to 2005 Series Champion Benny Gordon in Saturday night’s Sears Auto Center 200 at Madison (Wis.) International Raceway.

Crew chief Rob Huffman says it best, “I knew when I raced against Brandon in the NASCAR Dash Series that he had a ton of talent. He just needed to be in the right seat to prove it.” Ward was definitely in the right seat, at the right time, on Saturday night.

Mike Held had high hopes for debut
Wednesday, May 30, 2007 2:08:00 PM

Gray Court, S.C.-Mike Held’s 28th-place finish was the end to a long and wild day. Mike Held and his Mike Held racing team had a busy day as Mike wrecked early in practice. As the team worked hard to get the car back together and get about 10 laps in practice the rain started to come down.

The rain continued through the day and canceling qualifying. With only 31 cars there at Madison, Mike and his team were safely in the show and prepared the car for the race.

NASCAR CANADIAN TIRE SERIES presented by Sirius Satellite Radio
POST-RACE NOTEBOOK – CAYUGA
DODGE DEALERS 200, MAY 26

A FIRST, BUT NOT REALLY: Don Thomson, Jr. (No. 4 Home Hardware Chevrolet) became the first driver to visit victory lane in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series with his win at Cayuga Speedway Park, but he needed little direction on what to do. Thomson is a five-time CASCAR Super Series champion. He won the five titles consecutively from 2001 to 2005.

BATTLE FOR SUPREMACY: Chevrolet picked up the first manufacturer’s win courtesy of Thomson, but Dodge led the way in the Dodge Dealers 200. Five Dodges placed in the top 10 led by Mark Dilley (No. 9 Dodge/Wild Wing Dodge Avenger) in second place. In addition to Thomson, Peter Gibbons (No. 1 Canadian Tire/Master Craft Chevrolet) finished in the third. Rounding out the top 10 were the Fords of Andrew Ranger (No. 27 Wal-Mart/Tide) and Kerry Micks (No. 02 Beyond Digital Imaging) along with the Pontiac of Kent Nuhn (No. 09 The Fuel Genie/Nuhn’s Auto Recyclers). All told, 12 Dodges, eight Chevys, two Fords and one Pontiac were in the field.

FIRST TO …: D.J. Kennington (No. 17 Castol Dodge) was on top of the world after winning the first Bud Pole Award in the Canadian Tire Series, but a broken rear trailing arm after the first lap ended all hope earning the night’s big prize and eventually led to a finish at the tail of the field. To add insult to injury, Kennington passed on an opportunity to race in the NASCAR Busch Series event at Lowes Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C.

CROSS-POLLINATION: The Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats have entered into a partnership with Dave Whitlock (No. 39 Dickies/Ticats Dodge). “Dave’s car will be taking the Ticats brand coast-to-coast,” Hamilton President Scott Mitchell said. ”We’re confident that the NASCAR Canadian Tire series is going to be an overwhelming success and we’re very excited that the Ticats will be a part of it.”

MOBIL 1 OIL “COMMAND PERFORMANCE OF THE RACE” AWARD: In addition to picking up the first win in the Canadian Tire Series and all that goes with it, Thomson also collects $1,500 from Mobil 1 as a reward for his effort.

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE RULES: It didn’t take long for Canadian Tires Series drivers to adapt to NASCAR’s series-mandated double file restarts with all lead lap cars at the front of the field. The Dodge Dealers 200 produced eight different leaders with the lead changing hands 16 times during the event. Thomson (78) and Dilley (59) led the most laps.

A NEW FORCE: Ron Van Es (No. 11 Star Van Systems Chevrolet) showed signs of what might be this season. A new motor program with Peter Gibbons along with a veteran team including crew chief Alex Nagy has the team brimming with confidence. Van Es led just 10 laps, but was among the leaders before sustaining damage to his car in a lap 98 incident.

POWER RANGER: It was not his first stock car race, but it was the first since deciding to make the full-time switch to NASCAR. Andrew Ranger (No. 27 Wal-Mart/Tide Ford Fusion) finished fourth and fared well in the rough and tumble world of stock car racing with his car sporting a few doughnuts by race’s end. Ranger finished 10th in points a season ago in the Champ Car World Series.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: For anyone unable to be on hand last Saturday night at Cayuga to witness this historic race, TSN will air a replay of the race on Saturday, June 9 at 2:00 p.m. ET. (NASCAR PR)
