Haas Hires Borland
Haas CNC Racing announced today that Matt Borland has been hired as the team’s Director of Competition. Team General Manager Joe Custer made the official announcement in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Garage at Lowes Motor Speedway. “Haas Racing was founded with a commitment to building the team with quality people,” Custer said. “Bringing Matt Borland on board as our Director of Competition is a strengthening of that commitment. Matt’s knowledge and leadership ability are proven by his many successes,” he said. “We are extremely pleased to have someone of Matt’s caliber oversee our operation.”

Busch Brothers Settle Differences
Kurt Busch had a brotherly chat with Kyle Busch earlier this week after the two crashed during last weekend’s Nextel All-Star Challenge at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. “The initial discussion was over who was giving and who was taking and who wasn’t,” he said. “Over that discussion I think he got the sense of realization that he has been driving maybe a percentage point or two too high as of late … We’ve all been young drivers before that have gone through the, ‘Hey, I’ve got a fast race car, I deserve to win’ but yet you can’t count your chickens before they hatch, and so I think he realized that, and I hope it helps him, wrecking with his brother, that he can mature in a stronger fashion and a quicker fashion. I think he enjoyed the talk that we had.”

Dale Jr. Not In Will
When Dale Earnhardt Jr. demanded 51 percent ownership of Dale Earnhardt Inc., it might have seemed logical that the son of the team founder would already own part of the company. So why doesn’t he? Because the will of his father, the seven-time Cup champion killed on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500, didn’t give him an ownership stake in the team. Earnhardt’s will, signed in December 1992, awards 100 percent of DEI to his widow, Teresa, Dale Jr.’s stepmother. The estate filings, which were probated in Iredell County, N.C., show that Teresa Earnhardt owns the race team.

Petty Will Travel To Indy 500
“The King” Richard Petty is making a presence at his second marquee event in the month of May on Sunday. Petty will join Executive Vice President of Race Operations Robbie Loomis and eight-time champion crew chief Dale Inman at the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing”, the Indianapolis 500. Petty, who also attended the Kentucky Derby on May 5th, will be a guest of John Andretti and his Panther Racing Dallara Honda sponsored by Camping World and RVs.com. For “The King” Richard Petty, Andretti’s invitation marks the first time that Petty has witnessed the start of the Indianapolis 500. Petty, along with Loomis and Inman, will depart Greensboro, North Carolina Sunday morning and arrive in Indianapolis to watch the race. The trio will then arrive back to Concord, North Carolina in time for all three to participate in that night’s Coca-Cola 600 to complete the “double duty” day. Petty will have two entries, Kyle Petty and the #45 Coke Zero Dodge and Bobby Labonte and the #43 Chocolate Chex Dodge, entered in the event.

Rock N’ Racing With Montgomery Gentry
Michigan International Speedway has teamed up with its official beer sponsor, Miller Lite, to host a Miller Rock N’ Racing concert, which will feature a post-race performance by country music sensation Montgomery Gentry on Saturday, June 16. The concert will take place after the conclusion of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Michigan 200, which is slated to begin at 3 p.m. Fans who have purchased tickets to the NCTS Michigan 200, which will feature many of today’s hottest drivers such as Mark Martin, Johnny Benson and Todd Bodine, can use their ticket stub for gate admission to the post-race concert and witness one of country music’s hottest bands perform outside of Turns 1 and 2.

Biffle/Tryson could reunite at DEI? UPDATE: Pat Tryson doesn’t know where he’ll work next, but he hasn’t ruled out a reunion with driver #16-Greg Biffle. Fired as Biffle’s crew chief at Roush Fenway Racing this week, Tryson said on Thursday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway that he’s been contacted about a job from officials at Dale Earnhardt Inc. He also acknowledged that Biffle has had ongoing conversations with DEI even before Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced he was leaving the organization that his father built. “I know if they want to keep Greg Biffle, [Roush] better get some stuff together,” Tryson said during practice for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600. “I don’t think Greg’s shopping himself. I also don’t believe he’s going to rush to sign.” Biffle’s contract with Roush Fenway runs through 2008 and he’s in the middle of negotiations on an extension. While he’s said that an extension is his first choice, he wouldn’t be the first person to get out of a Roush contract a year early. Kurt Busch left a year after the 2005 season to join Penske Racing.(ESPN.com)(5-24-2007)
UPDATE: Greg Biffle’s contract negotiation with Roush Fenway Racing is currently “in limbo,” the driver said Thursday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. “Right now we’ve made a counter offer,” Biffle said. “A lot of it regarded appearances and the way the contract was written — and obviously money was one of the factors. So we’re waiting to see where they sit with everything.” Biffle explained the addition of Fenway Sports Group to the equation has diluted negotiations a bit.(ESPN.com)(5-25-2007)

Senators Ask NASCAR to Race on Ethanol, Win for America: On the eve of the biggest weekend in auto racing, two United States Senators have asked NASCAR to consider joining the IndyCar Racing League by converting to the “fuel of the future,” American-made ethanol. With the eyes of the world on auto racing, U.S. Senators John Thune (R-SD) and Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN) today sent a letter to NASCAR President Brian France, asking that NASCAR begin considering the conversion of its fleet to high-powered U.S. ethanol and the long-term promotion of American-made ethanol.(United States Senator - John Thune site, also see a letter to Brian France here)(5-25-2007)

Ragan to test at Infineon Wed: #6-David Ragan will come to Infineon Raceway for a one-day test session on May 30. As a rookie, Ragan has never competed at Infineon Raceway, but he did visit the track in February for a one-day test in an American Speed Association (ASA) stock car. He ran 40 laps on the road course. “Any road course is going to be pretty tough for me,” Ragan said. “I’m just trying to learn the layout of the track.” Ragan is expected to test throughout the day on the road course in an ASA stock car. He will be assisted by instructors from the Jim Russell Racing Schools, which is based at Infineon Raceway. Ragan will return to Infineon Raceway for the Toyota/Save Mart 350, June 22-24.(Infineon Raceway PR)(5-25-2007)

2007 Official Small Business of NASCAR Announced: Office Depot announced that Kentuckiana Engineering Company, Inc. (KEC) of Louisville, KY, will be the “Official Small Business of NASCAR, courtesy of Office Depot” for the remainder of the 2007 Nextel Cup race season. KEC owner Bryan Handy was introduced by Office Depot Senior Vice President Tony Ueber today during a press event at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Ueber and Handy were joined by driver Carl Edwards, Roush Fenway Racing owner Jack Roush, ESPN Vice President of Sports Management Rob Temple and NASCAR Vice President of Corporate Marketing Jim O’Connell. Handy helped Edwards unveil the special edition Office Depot #99 car featuring the logo of KEC. The logo will make its on-track debut during the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. As the “Official Small Business of NASCAR,” KEC, an environmental consulting company specializing in air quality issues, is receiving invaluable exposure on television. Handy worked with Logoworks, part of the Office Depot Design, Print & Ship Depot, to create KEC’s first-ever company logo, which will be on the TV panel (rear panel on a NASCAR racecar) of the #99 Office Depot Ford Fusion during this weekend’s race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Throughout the rest of the season, the logo will be on the car’s b-post (located between the front and rear windows). As part of the prize package given to KEC, Office Depot is printing a year’s supply of new business cards, letterhead and envelopes. The Office Depot Design, Print & Ship service is also designing a new website for KEC that will showcase its newly-created logo. Plus, KEC receives a $10,000 small business makeover from Office Depot, a tour of the ESPN at-track production operation, and a special marketing consultation with representatives from NASCAR to help guide KEC on how take advantage of their new business assets. One of the new and exciting elements of this year’s promotion is the additional television exposure for KEC. ESPN is showcasing KEC as the “Official Small Business of NASCAR” during a segment on the ESPN2 show “NASCAR Now.” (Office Depot site)(5-25-2007)

Race Rock memorabilia auction set for June 1-3 on LiveAuctioneers.com

NEW YORK – After serving as a backdrop for 11 years in famed eatery Race Rock Supercharged Restaurant in Orlando, more than 1,000 pieces of motorsports collectibles and memorabilia will be auctioned online at LiveAuctioneers.com June 1-3. Highlights of the sale include Jeff Gordon’s 1994 #24 Winston Cup race-used car, Richard Petty’s Charlie Horse One used cowboy hat and Dale Earnhart’s used Wheaties race suit. The entire catalog can be viewed at www.LiveAuctioneers.com.

Winning bidders have a chance to grab pieces of racing history from the full gamut of motorsports — NASCAR, Formula One, Indy, dragster, motorcycle and powerboat racing.
Bigfoot, the largest monster truck in the world, will also be a featured item in the sale. The Bob Chandler truck, one of only three of its size in the world, has served as the restaurant’s advertising beacon for many years.

The items for sale are part of an extensive and authentic collection assembled by Race Rock’s founder Bobby Moore, who first opened the restaurant in 1992 in Detroit. His partners and racing greats Richard and Kyle Petty, Mario and Michael Andretti, John Force, Jeff Gordon, Don Prudhomme, Rusty Wallace, Scott Parker, Ernie Irvin and Geoff Bodine, relocated the flagship store to Orlando in 1996.

In two previous starts in the NASCAR Busch Series in his own less than stellar equipment, Travis Kittleson made enough of an impression that race teams remembered his name. Now, in the best equipment he has driven to date and for a team owner whose name is synonymous with success, Kittleson will get the opportunity of a lifetime. On July 21, he will drive the #20 Joe Gibbs Racing Chevy in the Busch race at Gateway.(Florida Today)(via Jayski) (05-20-07) AND: In addition, Steve deSouza, Joe Gibbs Racing’s vice president of Busch Series operations, said Thursday at LMS that as of now the deal with Kittleson is for one race. After an earlier test with General Motors in which Kittleson attended along with JGR driver Aric Almirola, deSouza said he was impressed and with no room for anymore developement drivers at the time, he wanted to give Kittleson a chance to run in solid equipment to help him showcase his skills. Trevor Bayne, already an 11-year racing veteran at 16, is the newest addition to the Dale Earnhardt Inc. (DEI) Driver Development Program. He joins 17-year-old Jeffrey Earnhardt who became the program’s first driver in January. In fact, Bayne is moving from Knoxville, Tenn., to the Mooresville area to be close to both DEI and his family’s shop where his race cars are currently prepared. Bayne will run the complete USAR Hooters Pro Cup Southern Division this season in addition to three NASCAR Grand National Busch East Series events.Bayne began racing go karts at five. Over the next eight years, he won more than 300 events and earned 22 titles including World Karting Association (WKA) World Champion three times. Last season, Bayne stepped up to the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series Southern Division and won rookie of the year. At 15, he again was the youngest in series’ history to earn top rookie honors. In 2008, DEI’s driver development plan includes having Bayne and Earnhardt competing as teammates in Chevrolets on the NASCAR Busch East Series. (DEI PR) (05-24-07)

This article covers the hauler parade from the Richland Mall Sears to the Town Square park. There is a local team Cowen Motorsports out of the Cowen Trucking Co yard in Perrysville, a quick 10 minute trip down SR 39 towards the Mohican campgrounds.

I have photos of the town festival and parade up Olivesburg Road(SR 545) to the back pit entrance to the track and included some campground pics to show fans relaxing.

The Inside Line by Tim Stephens
The sight of Ron Hornaday pulling into victory lane in a NASCAR Crafsman Truck Series (NCTS) event is nothing new. He’s the circuit’s all-time leading winner with 30 race victories and a two-time series champion. Watching his post-race celebration in the recent Quaker State and Lube 200 at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway was notable nonetheless. Look closely amid the confetti and flashing lights and you’ll see three former competitors who have combined to make Hornaday a contender every time an NCTS fields rolls off the starting grid this season. When Hornaday takes to the track these days, his spotter is long-time adversary Rick Carelli. His team owner is former protégé Kevin Harvick. For years, Hornaday and Carelli were among the top drivers in late model racing throughout the Western states. Both went on to claim championships in the now-defunct NASCAR Southwest Series.

NASCAR CANADIAN TIRE SERIES

CAYUGA SPEEDWAY PARK NEWS AND NOTES

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 24, 2007) – The much anticipated inaugural race of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series is scheduled for Saturday, May 26 at Cayuga Speedway Park with upwards of 30 cars expected to be on hand for a chance to win this historic race.

THE TRACK: The 5/8-mile oval of Cayuga, near Hagersville, Ontario, has the honor of hosting the first NASCAR Canadian Tire Series event. It is not, however, the first time that track has attracted top NASCAR talent. In its over 40 years, the likes of Bobby and Davey Allison, Dale Earnhardt, Bill Elliott, Matt Kenseth, Mark Martin, Tony Stewart, Rusty Wallace and Darrell Waltrip among others have competed there in various events.

NASCAR IN CANADA HISTORY 101: While the Dodge Dealers 200 is the first race for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, it is not the first NASCAR-sanctioned event in Canada. In fact, NASCAR’s premier series, known today as the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series, has held two events in Canada. The first was July 1, 1952 in Stamford Park in Niagara Falls, Ontario which was won by Buddy Shuman in a Hudson Hornet. The second was held at Canadian National Exposition Speedway in Toronto. Lee Petty won the event. Also in this race, a young man by the name of Richard Petty made his debut in NASCAR’s premier series.

NASCAR HISTORY IN CANADA FOR $200, ALEX: Over the years, several Canadians have participated in NASCAR events. Earl Ross won the 1974 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Rookie of the Year. Roy Smith won four NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series championships. Montreal’s Dick Foley competed in the first Daytona 500. Pete Harding won the 1999 title in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Northwest Series.

WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD: Many of the entrants in the Dodge Dealers 200 are former CASCAR Super Series competitors and have raced numerous times at Cayuga Speedway Park, but this time it will be a little different. Perhaps the biggest change to the cars this year is the move to a wider Goodyear tire. Several teams tested the new tires at Cayuga two week ago and learned their race set-ups would not be as different as originally believed. “We came in here with some assumptions on how to prepare the car, but we pretty much ended up with the set-up that we ran here before,” said veteran driver Dave Whitlock (No. 39 Dickies Ford).

Ticket information for the Dodge Dealers 200 can be obtained by calling Cayuga Speedway Park at (866) 670-1958 or by logging onto www.cayugaspeedwaypark.com.
