SPEED Channel’s Best Ratings
Speed officials said last Saturday’s broadcast of the NASCAR Nextel All-Star Challenge at Lowe’s Motor Speedway earned the highest rating in the network’s history. The all-star event had a rating of 3.53, a 7 percent increase over the 3.30 for last year’s race, which was carried on the cable network FX. The rating represented Speed’s highest rating ever, topping previous mark of 2.1 for the 2005 Craftsman Truck Series race from Daytona. Speed, which is now available in more than 75 million homes, said the event averaged 2.48 million households.

No deals done, no teams out, Elledge says: People already trying to rule things in or out about where Dale Earnhardt Jr. might drive in the 2008 Nextel Cup season are getting ahead of themselves, Kelley Earnhardt Elledge said Wednesday. I think a lot of people are drawing conclusions, said Elledge, the drivers sister who is also helping to negotiate his next deal in the sport. Most of the speculation, it seems, has been in trying to figure out which teams - for various reasons - might not be in a position to add Earnhardt Jr. But Elledge said Wednesday that no bets are off. The process has not reached a point where we have eliminated options, she said. All of our options remain viable until we have 100% decided on one. Elledge, who also is vice president and general manager of JR Motorsports, which fields Earnhardt Jr.-owned cars in the Busch Series and other developmental racing series, said that since that announcement she has fielded even more calls than she expected to get. We have gotten tons of support from the industry and more importantly our fans since we have made the announcement to leave DEI as a driver, she said. I have received more calls that expected, but the more options the better.” Elledge said she and Earnhardt Jr. have put together what theyre looking for in the next deal for him as a driver, and that conversations with various owners have started. We communicated that by mid to late summer we would definitely have our position solidified, Elledge said. Obviously, if we want to make the most out of this change, a date no later than August 1 would be best, due to sponsor point of sale, advertising, licensed products and other things that need time to be developed and produced.”(Thatsracin)(5-24-2007)

Goodyear will seek tire-testing changes: NASCAR limits tires for Nextel Cup testing, barring teams from using Goodyears except at the seven major authorized tests. So, teams have made side deals with Hoosier and Michelin subsidiary B. F. Goodrich for test tires. Stu Grant, Goodyears racing boss, said he plans to talk with NASCAR about changing the tire-testing rules to try to find a solution to this thing, because what weve got now is not a good situation. The whole testing thing has to be addressed, because the teams are not happy. Theyre asking me for tires, and I cannot supply tires.(Winston Salem Journal)(5-24-2007)

Career start #200 for Newman: The last time #12-Ryan Newman posted four consecutive top-10 finishes it was early in the 2005 season. The streak began in Darlington and continued through Richmond, Charlotte and Dover. In those four races, Newman, driver of the #12 Alltel Dodge Charger, earned a fifth, a third, a fifth and an eighth-place finish, respectively. This weekend at the Coca-Cola 600, Newman will be seeking his fourth-consecutive top-10 finish at Lowes Motor Speedway. Newman also will be celebrating a milestone in his eight-year career in NASCARs top series — his 200th start.(Penske Racing PR)(5-23-2007)

DISH Network to debut at Coke 600: This weekend #16-Greg Biffle will run a red and black Dish Network paint scheme on the #16 Ford. He is scheduled to run the Dish Network paint scheme 12 more times this season.(Roush Racing PR)(5-23-2007)

Higher education fills need for speed: Colleges and universities are feeling NASCAR’s need for speed. Institutions are expanding motorsports-related degree programs to meet the demand for high-skilled workers on racing teams and throughout the industry. The trend is especially apparent in the Charlotte region, considered the cradle of the sport and host to Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Consider:
UNC Charlotte will offer industry-related electives in a master’s program in sports marketing and management that starts this fall.
Legislators are considering spending $500,000 to support motorsports training at community colleges.
Belmont Abbey College in Gaston County launched a four-year business program in racing management last fall.
Graduates are winning, too: At Hendrick Motorsports, the hottest team in NASCAR, one-fourth of its engineers were trained at UNCC, school officials say. Other schools have alumni at companies such as Dale Earnhardt Inc. and NASCAR Images. The growth of motorsports programs coincides with the general increase in demand for skilled auto technicians. On Tuesday, Central Piedmont Community College dedicated its Joe Hendrick Center for Automotive Technology, which certifies current and prospective technicians to work for companies such as BMW and Toyota. On the motorsports side, CPCC already offers a machining certificate and has proposed opening a motorsports institute. The Rowan-Cabarrus Community College motorsports management technology program is hosting an open house from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the RCCC South Campus, 1531 Trinity Church Road in Concord. The session will be in Room 2114 of Building 2000. Attendees can learn about the RCCC program and a four-year program at N.C. A&T State University.(Charlotte Observer)(5-24-2007)

Penalty Issued for Unauthorized Duplication of a NASCAR Annual Credential: NASCAR announced today that Douglas Mercier [#00 Hauler Driver] has been fined $5,000 and suspended indefinitely from the sport for his unauthorized duplication of a NASCAR annual credential. The rule infraction occurred May 18 at Lowes Motor Speedway. Mercier violated Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing; unauthorized duplication of a NASCAR annual credential) of the 2007 NASCAR rule book.(NASCAR PR)(5-24-2007)

Bowyer Enters Late Model Portion of May 25 Eckerd Outlaw Showdown: #07-Clint Bowyer plans to compete in the Goodyear Fastrak Challenge late model portion of the Eckerd Outlaw Showdown Friday night at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The winged World of Outlaws sprint cars headline the program with the Goodyear Fastrak Challenge late models serving as the support division. Bowyer, of Emporia, Kan., is entered in the #07 Jack Daniels late model and will be among those chasing a $2,000 first prize in the 25-lap late model finale. Before joining Richard Childress Racing, Bowyer honed his racing skills at several Midwestern dirt tracks including Lakeside Speedway where he won the 2002 track championship. Also on the late model entry list for Friday’s Eckerd Outlaw Showdown is Austin Dillon, the grandson of Bowyer’s Nextel Cup and Busch Series car owner Richard Childress. The Goodyear Fastrak Challenge series features late model stock cars powered by General Motors crate engines. Twenty-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser, defending series champion Donny Schatz and 2001 titlist Danny Lasoski are among those scheduled to compete in the sprint car portion of the Eckerd Outlaw Showdown. Tickets can be purchased by calling the speedway ticket office at 1-800-455-FANS or online at www.lowesmotorspeedway.com.(LMS PR)(5-23-2007)

It was announced today at Roush Fenway Racing that Greg Erwin will take over as crew chief of the team’s #16 Nextel Cup entry with driver Greg Biffle. “We obviously weren’t performing at a level at which Jack expected and a change was made,” said Biffle. Erwin was most recently the crew chief at Robby Gordon Motorsports for the #7 Nextel Cup entry. Prior to the two years at Robby Gordon Motorsports, Erwin accumulated seven years of experience as an engineer at Richard Childress Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing. “I feel that this is one of the top crew chief opportunities in the Nextel Cup garage,” said Erwin. “If you could paint a picture of where you would like to go as a crew chief to give it a shot to win and compete for a championship, this is it. I am also excited about the backing of the engineering department at Roush and the resources they offer. The fact that Greg Biffle is the driver was a factor that weighed heavily on my decision. He is a straight forward kind of guy and I look forward to working with him.” Chris Andrews, current Engineering Manager at Roush Fenway Racing, will serve as interim crew chief for Greg Biffle and the #16 Dish Network Nextel Cup entry this weekend. Erwin will serve as an advisor on the pit box during Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 before officially taking over crew chief duties on Tuesday, May 29th.(Roush Fenway Racing PR)(5-23-2007)

Goody’s Cool Orange to Sponsor McCumbee & #45 at Pocono: Goody’s Cool Orange, the revolutionary new flavor from Goody’s Headache Powders, will be the primary sponsor for driver Chad McCumbee and the #45 Petty Enterprises Dodge at the Pocono 500 Nextel Cup race on June 10 at Pocono Raceway. McCumbee, making his Nextel Cup debut, will fill in for Kyle Petty as he goes to the booth for TNT for the first of five races. Goody’s Cool Orange, the market’s first flavored headache powder, provides the same fast pain relief as the original Goody’s with a new, fresh orange flavor. As part of a national launch, the special Cool Orange paint scheme at Pocono will mark the first major racing activity for Goody’s outside its traditional, Southeastern U.S. market. McCumbee, 22, is in his second season in the Craftsman Truck Series after racing in the ARCA-RE/MAX Series where he finished third in a race at Pocono in 2004. He has recently been involved in various testing duties with Petty Enterprises including test sessions at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Off the track, McCumbee starred as Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the ESPN motion picture “3″ displaying a natural talent for acting along with his driving skills. The Pocono 500 will mark the first of five races that Petty will be in the television booth broadcasting the races on TNT while McCumbee pilots the #45 Goody’s Cool Orange Dodge. Petty, along with the entire Petty organization, have been loyal supporters of Goody’s since the brand entered the sport in 1977. Goody’s Cool Orange is now available in stores nationally. NASCAR truck racers plan new pit strategies Saturday
By ROB MCCURDY
News Journal
tinyurl.com/yvovpz

The lesson Todd Bodine and Ted Musgrave learned in last year’s Ohio 250 was that if you pit after Ron Hornaday and Jack Sprague come in there is absolutely no way you can back through the field.

Ted Musgrave and Todd Bodine are scheduled to appear at the Columbus Destroyers game in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, May 26, 2007 [after the Mansfield race]. Tentatively, the teammates are scheduled to participate in the game’s opening ceremonies, then sign autographs for fans during half-time. Game start time is 7:00pm. www.jayski.com/pages/appear.htm

The Germains, whose main dealerships are in Columbus, are part owners of the Columbus Destroyers, a member of the Arena football league that has been featured on Mondays on ESPN2.

BUCKEYE NATIVE JACK SMITH READIES FOR NCTS DEBUT AT MANSFIELD
MANSFIELD, OH (May 23, 2007) – Jack Smith, the accomplished ASA Late Model veteran who boasted four wins and a potent 42% Top-10 average in ASA Late Model competition in 2006, has partnered with Foristell, Missouri’s MB Motorsports for this weekend’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series’ “Ohio 250” at Mansfield Motorsports Park. Smith, a native Buckeye, has collected a lot of hardware on paved shorttracks like the half-mile oval but never in the NCTS.

Mittler’s Cooper Bussmann/Mittler Brothers Machine & Tool/Dave Porter Truck Sales #63 Ford F-150 has already made two appearances on the 2007 tour but each with a different driver and none on a shorttrack. The Midwestern based team owner is credited for giving their first NASCAR debuts to accomplished racers including Jamie McMurray, Carl Edwards and the late Tony Roper so Smith has earned quite a distinction to have Mittler see potential in him.

Racing will take place on May 26th at the Mansfield Motorsports Park and will be televised live at 1 p.m. on SPEED with MRN Radio also broadcasting via the airwaves. For the latest news on Jack Smith visit www.jacksmithracing.com or for more information on the MB Motorsports’ team including future announcements on additional appearances in the NCTS by Jack Smith, log on to www.mbracing.net

Happy Birthday Mr. Moore; ARCA’s Oldest, Living Winner
Special Thanks to Vietnam veteran Reggie Houghwot, who not only brought Mr Moore to ARCA’s attention, was also instrumental in the following story.

FREWSBURG NY (5-24-07) - He still lives in the same 1890s-built house his father and grandfather grew up in, and died in. He still cuts his own grass, about two to three acres around the property he grew his roots on. He still attends the same church he has gone to since day one, about a mile over the closest hill. He’s still married to his lovely bride Virginia, 60 years and counting. He is not only the oldest, living NASCAR winner, he is also the oldest, living ARCA winner, and he’ll be 95 on June 8th.

His name is Lloyd Moore, and he’s alive and well living just outside of Frewsburg, New York. And he is remarkably sharp in mind and body. The photo here is recent.

A school bus driver/mechanic and racecar driver, Moore seemed to get more satisfaction out of delivering kids safely to school than he ever got out of racing.

Kimmels Still Stand Tall; Frank and Frankie Celebrate

Over the last half-dozen years or so, Frank Kimmel has been averaging about 900 laps-led per season. With just over one-third of the 2007 season gone, Kimmel has led just 59 laps so far. And, it’s been since 1997 since Kimmel has gone this deep into the season without a victory. Still yet, in the series’ most competitive era, it’s Kimmel who stands tallest atop the ARCA RE/MAX Series national championship point standings headed to Iowa Speedway for the June 2 Prairie Meadows 250 LIVE on SPEED at 9 pm ET.

Despite going winless so far this year, we’ll bet his son Frankie’s victory at Winchester Speedway back on May 6th makes up for all of it and more. At left, Frankie Kimmel celebrates in victory lane after winning the 50-lap Winchester Street Stock feature event. Frankie out-maneuvered the leader in traffic on the final lap to win in only his third stock car start. Congrats!
