We apologize again for the duplicate editions some of you received yesterday. I guess I’m just going to have to bite the bullet and learn how to use some other software to send out the Gazette. Time is the limiting factor, of course.
We’d like to welcome advertiser “Winrights Pits and Pals” to the Stock Car Gazette. Please check out their ad below, and don’t forget about Hasco’s ad, right above this section.
Big news today is that the “new car” (aka COT, etc.) is going to be used for the entire season in 2008. More below.

Banquet Dates Announced
For 2007, the accents are on both tradition and innovation, regarding NASCAR’s postseason national series awards ceremony swing. First, the traditional: For the 27th consecutive year, the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series champion will be feted amid the bright lights of New York City, with the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Awards Ceremony set for the world-famous Waldorf=Astoria hotel on the evening of Friday, Nov. 30. “Honoring our NASCAR NEXTEL Cup champion at the Waldorf has created many memories through the years,” said NASCAR Chairman/CEO Brian France.
James Hylton Takes 1st Quarter Spirit Award
James Hylton, the 72-year-old stock car competitor who attempted to qualify for this year’s Daytona 500, has been selected as the first-quarter recipient of the National Motorsports Press Association/Pocono Spirit Award. Hylton found himself in the national spotlight during 2007 Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway when he attempted to become the oldest driver to qualify for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series’ season-opening Daytona 500. The two-time NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series winner nearly pulled off the feat, finishing 23rd in one of the two Gatorade 150-mile qualifying races. While disappointed that he was unable to make his first NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series start since 1993, Hylton, who has 601 career starts in the series, vowed he would be back.

Gibbs “re-evaluating” Almirola’s Cup program: Joe Gibbs Racing will “re-evaluate” its part-time Nextel Cup program for #80-Aric Almirola before allowing the 23-year-old to attempt to qualify for a second race, JGR vice president and development head Steve De Souza said. Almirola’s #80 Chevrolet was removed on Monday from the entry list for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600, De Souza said, because the team was not able to adequately prepare a replacement for the car he wrecked attempting to qualify for the Nextel Open at Lowe’s Motor Speedway last weekend. “We’re not sure what happened, ” De Souza said. “He’s had a loose car all day and they thought they’d made some adjustments, but it didn’t fix it. You could see from what happened it was nothing that would be a driver’s fault.” De Souza said the team will do “due diligence” on Almirola’s program, which currently includes part-time Busch and truck series racing, then huddle to reassess his schedule. He had been tentatively set to qualify for up to five Cup events. De Souza said the specialized speedway and research and development outfit that had prepared Almirola’s Cup cars had not produced adequate race cars.(St Petersburg Times)(5-23-2007)

Should Hendrick cut driver to make room for Dale Jr.?
Kyle Busch talented, but a headache to owner
Rick Hendrick wasn’t lying when he said he has no room on his team for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Hendrick, the last big-time owner to comment publicly on Earnhardt’s free-agent status, has spoken to NASCAR’s most popular driver about his future. But with a full stable of drivers under contract, Hendrick didn’t have a whole lot to offer.

Woodard Racing To Be Auctioned Off
By Tom Bowles
In a Busch and Truck Series world that’s increasingly been invaded by Nextel Cup team owners, another independent car owner is about to officially bite the dust.
Tonight marks the auction of Woodard Racing, an ill-fated venture that lasted only one season in the Craftsman Truck Series before being swallowed up whole. Initially employing former Hendrick development driver Boston Reid, the team struggled throughout the year, finishing no better than 14th while losing a partner (Eddie Sharp) and continuing a yearlong search for a primary sponsor.
They never got one - in an act of desperation, Reid was replaced by Damon Lusk with five races remaining in a move to try and jumpstart the team. It didn’t work - Lusk finished no better than 17th in his two month tryout and the team headed into ‘07 still sponsorless and with a lack of momentum. The team never made it to the track this season - after over a year of running the team out of pocket, the money was gone and the team folded, a familiar story for the independent owners in this bleak modern era of NASCAR’s minor leagues.
The auction for the truck program will begin at 6:00 PM on Performance Drive in Mooresville. For more info, visit www.gavelauction.com.

National broadcast on Fox will shine spotlight on Mansfield Motorsports Park

If the FOX cameras show beyond the backstretch grandstands, you will notice turned over dirt, which is waiting on Ohio EPA and Army Corps of Engineers approval to construct the proposed dragstrip for the IHRA World Nationals in June 2008. Drivers like Ted Musgrave will wonder if the track will get any attention to modify the turns to give more than one groove. One clue would be that the grandstands on the back stretch and turns 1 & 2 are not permanent, having just been built in the last 3 weeks.

MILWAUKEE ELECTRIC TOOLS TO SPOSNSOR J.R. FITZPATRICK IN 2007
May 22, 2007. The Fitzpatrick Motorsports team is pleased to announce that John Ryan (JR) Fitzpatrick and his #84 Chevrolet will carry primary sponsorship from Milwaukee Electric Tools for the full twelve race schedule of the new NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. The association with Fitzpatrick Motorsports and Milwaukee Electric Tools began in 2006 with the CASCAR Super Series where JR captured the series title.
The entire Fitzpatrick Motorsports team is pleased to continue the relationship with the company that supported their championship efforts in the 2006 racing season. “We are very excited to continue this partnership with Milwaukee Electric Tools. Right from the beginning Milwaukee Electric Tools were very generous and supportive of JR’s effort last year and we couldn’t be happier to have them back with our team again. It’s wonderful to work with people that want to succeed” said the Fitzpatrick Motorsports representative.
Milwaukee Electric Tools is also delighted to be returning for another season. “We are very excited about working together again this year with JR and Fitzpatrick Motorsports” said Andrew Halstead, Marketing Manager for Milwaukee Electric Tools Canada. “In our first season together they blew away all of our expectations with their skill and professionalism, and we couldn’t have been more proud. We are very pleased to continue our association and like the rest of Canada excited about the new NASCAR Canadian Tire Series”.
The new NASCAR Canadian Tire Series racing season opens this Saturday May 26th at 8PM with 200 laps of racing at Cayuga Speedway. More information on the series can be obtained by visiting www.cayugaspeedwaypark.com and www.nascarlocalracing.com All twelve races will also be shown on TSN.
