Thanks to the kindness of Nicole at Motorbooks, I had the great privilege of reviewing a copy of “NASCAR Then & Now”, featuring photography by Nigel Kinrade and Smyle Media.
The verdict? If you’re a NASCAR fan, you ought to get this book!
This book is a wonderful trip through past and present NASCAR. It’s got fantastic photographs and articles about all aspects of NASCAR. Chapters in the book include:
- Drivers and Teams
- Fans
- Horsepower
- The Tracks
- Setting the Stage
- Let’s Go Racin’!
What sets this book apart from other NASCAR books is the great comparisons of “then” and “now”. You can see what Darlington looked like in 1950 versus now, what a pit stop was in 1949 compared to now, and the evolution of a Ford stock car from 1962 to 2009. There’s much more besides just those, too.
This same concept has been featured in other subjects such as New York City, Civil War battlefields, and baseball parks.

Readers will see what Darlington looked like when it was built in 1950 compared to what it looks like now, how pit stops have changed between 1949 and today, compare a Ford stock car from 1962 with one from 2009 and MUCH MORE! Nowhere else can NASCAR fans so graphically trace the evolution of their favorite motorsport.
