Furniture Row Racing returns from an exciting weekend at Talladega Superspeedway. The program turned heads as the #78, sporting the National Day of Prayer paint scheme, snagged a sixth place qualifying position.
The team ran a tight race, and ended up with a solid 26th place finish.
General Manager, Joe Garone, explores the factors that ultimately helped the team jump in owner’s point, garner media attention, and got the fans on their feet for the #78.
“Our best qualifying results came at Talladega this past weekend. The 6th place starting position was due in part to Gary Beveridge and the fabrication shop. Gary, a superspeedway specialist, has been building winning bodies for Robert Yates Racing for years. Under his labor and guidance, the team built an aero happy car. We ran the car at Daytona and were not happy with the results, so after doing our homework, Gary cut the Ginn Built body off the car and started over with his own design. This coupled with Hendrick restrictor plate horsepower and a great chassis set up,led to our qualifying in the top ten. As the race unfolded, we played a fuel strategy race, and with the late cautions we were never able to draft back into the fromt of the pack. A white flag caution trapped us in 26th position before Kenny could run to the front. It was still a good showing for the team.
Richmond is coming up, and in last months testing we were very fast with this car. The car we will race is the car we ran and wrecked at Phoenix. Crew Chief, Jay Guy and the team have been working late hours to ensure we could race that car at Richmond. We expect to have another good quaifying run, and an even better race finish than Talladega.”
